Custom Trade Currency
Give your villagers a different way to do business.
Custom Trade Currency replaces emeralds in villager and wandering trader trades with a currency of your choice. Use the included copper, iron, gold, and diamond coins, pick a supported currency from another mod, or build your own setup using items from your modpack.
Both buying and selling use the chosen currency, so villagers can pay you in coins as well as accept them. The default setup works without any configuration.
Coins and crafting
The mod includes four kinds of coin, each with its own value:
| Coin | Default value |
|---|---|
| Copper Coin | 1 emerald |
| Iron Coin | 2 emeralds |
| Gold Coin | 4 emeralds |
| Diamond Coin | 8 emeralds |
Craft nine matching coins into a Coin Stack to save space, then craft the stack back into nine coins whenever you need them.
By default, one copper, iron, or gold ingot makes three matching coins, and one diamond makes three diamond coins. Coins cannot be crafted back into their original materials. Modpack authors can change the minting yield or disable these recipes.
Currency tooltips show what each coin is worth. On a server, these values follow the server's settings.
Keep your money in a coin sack
Craft a Coin Sack from leather and string for eight slots of currency storage. Carry it in your inventory and it can collect loose coins from your inventory automatically and supply matching coins when you trade.
Right-click while holding the sack to open it. You can also access its slots from your player inventory. If you have Curios installed, you can wear it in a dedicated coin sack slot.
The sack also works with your configured currency from other mods. Curios is optional.
Choose the currency for your world
Want your villagers to use the same money as the rest of your pack? Built-in presets are available for:
- Create: Numismatics
- Lightman's Currency
- Coins JE
- Simply Tokens or Coins, using its copper token
Install the currency mod you want to use, then select its preset in the configuration. You can disable this mod's coins individually or turn off the whole set.
For a custom economy, choose your own currency items and assign their values. You can also give different currencies or pricing rules to particular traders, villager professions, dimensions, or mods, and exclude traders you want to leave alone.
These options use physical currency items. Bank accounts, cards, and separate shop balance systems remain controlled by their own mods.
More than trading, if you want it
By default, emerald replacement applies to merchant trades. You can separately enable it for:
- Chest loot, mob drops, block drops, fishing, and villager gifts.
- Loose items on the ground and emeralds in player inventories.
- Emerald ingredients and results in supported crafting and processing recipes.
- Beacon payments.
Each option can be configured separately. Recipe replacement supports standard Minecraft recipe types; some custom machines and recipes need their own mod settings or datapack changes.
Getting started
Install the mod in the mods folder of your Forge instance. For multiplayer, install it on both the server and every player's client. Other currency mods are only needed if you choose to use their items.
To customize the economy, edit:
config/customtradecurrency/currency.jsonfor currency values and trader-specific rules.<world>/serverconfig/customtradecurrency-server.tomlfor currency presets, recipes, coin sack settings, and optional emerald replacement.
Server admins can run /ctc reload after editing these settings. Any player can use /ctc info to check the active currency. The Config button in the Forge Mods menu also opens a read-only overview.
Modded merchants that use Minecraft's standard trading system can use the chosen currency too. If another mod already replaces emeralds in trades, configure your pack so only one mod handles that replacement.
