This is what the inside of a rectangular room should look like for using the Housing Sign.
This is an external view, just to be clear what a rectangular room is. Here the sign is already placed.
This is the inside of the house, where you need to use the item. Also, that's your trader. He trades stuff. It's neat.
This mod adds an item that lets you summon a Trader in a room. The room must be solid wood (wooden doors count) and rectangular in shape, and it must have a bed, a torch, a crafting table, and a chest. The recipe for the item is as follows:
Stick, Stick, Stick
Sign, Sign, Stick
Sign, Sign, Stick
The Housing Sign item must be placed inside the room. A standard village house with outcroppings or extensions will not work. Right now the sign only recognizes rectangular housing. Please see images for reference to what's considered a rectangular room.
