Better Character 2.2

For Forge 1.12.2, Forge 1.20.1 and NeoForge 1.21.1. Update both client and server with the matching Minecraft/loader build.

Changes since 2.1

  • Fixed the distinction between lock and disable. Lock requires licenses for clothing and accessories only, never marks. Disable is an absolute ban, including operators, existing licenses, singleplayer and lock OFF.
  • Fixed per-ID locks so a license can unlock the piece. Existing specific-lock records migrate to ordinary license rules; actual disable bans remain intact.
  • Reviewed global/player commands, validation before mutations and completion suggestions. lock all affects accessories and the three clothing categories only. unlock player cannot override disable.
  • Fixed individual revocation and repeated license-item use in 1.12.2. Items now equip their piece. Added give, status, help and paginated list parity; license withdrawal checks state, permissions, hold time, policy changes and inventory space.
  • Added /bettercharacter force on|off. Servers and singleplayer worlds can require Better Character skins. ON hides the disable toggle and server-side validation rejects OFF from client uploads, codes and presets. OFF restores player choice. Better Character starts enabled by default; mandatory skins are OFF by default. This rule is independent of licenses.
  • Disabled choices display as blocked in the editor and are removed from synchronized in-world appearances. Rules persist per world across restarts.
  • Standardized texture IDs, commands and suggestions in English. The menu remains localized in Brazilian Portuguese. Older appearances, codes, rules, licenses and items remain compatible.
  • Independent colorpicker <body|hair|eyes|all> <on|off> rules. OFF hides HSV/HEX while retaining six preset swatches; the server clamps custom colors to the nearest allowed preset.
  • Smooth scrolling without page arrows for hair, facial hair, eyes, faces, clothing, accessories and marks. Existing catalog widths are respected, including two eye columns; color controls and eyebrow Y remain outside the scrolling viewport. Body and Character keep their own controls.
  • On joining a world, forbidden clothing is replaced with a random permitted piece of the same category for that player, without granting licenses. Valid pieces remain untouched; if nothing is available, only the forbidden piece is removed.

New and updated textures

  • Face #22 (face_style_22), including base and mouth.
  • Eyes #23 (eyes_23), including base, iris and shadow.
  • Bleeding #4 (bleeding_04), including preview and item.
  • Reworked Face #21 (face_style_21) base and mouth.
  • Replaced Face #6 (face_style_06) base and mouth.
  • Replaced the complete Eyes #11 set (eyes_11, formerly eye_09).
  • Previous texture batches are retained, including Eyebrows #10, Eyes #22, Bleeding #3, clothing and hairstyles. The visual gallery shows only the current 2.1.1/2.2 batch: three new options and three reworked options, totaling 13 PNG layers.
  • Original PNG resolution and transparency are preserved. Hisoka remains exclusive to NeoForge 1.21.1, hidden until authorized by server commands, with no license item.

Beginner guide: disabling a piece

Disable is a list of pieces nobody may wear in that world, even after unlocking them. You need operator permission level 2 on a server, or enabled cheats in singleplayer.

  1. Find the ID: /bettercharacter list tops. Read another page with /bettercharacter list tops 2. IDs stay English regardless of menu language.
  2. Ban a piece: /bettercharacter disable tops top_36.
  3. Its option is blocked and the piece is removed from in-world appearances. This still applies after /bettercharacter lock off.
  4. Allow it again: /bettercharacter unlock tops top_36. This opens it globally, without equipping it. To require a license afterward, use /bettercharacter lock tops top_36 with the lock system ON.

Categories: tops, bottoms, extras (capes/hoods/tunics), accessories, and marks. clothes groups tops, bottoms and extras; all groups every category supported by that action.

/bettercharacter disable accessories glasses_02
/bettercharacter disable marks bleeding_04
/bettercharacter disable clothes
/bettercharacter unlock accessories glasses_02
/bettercharacter unlock marks bleeding_04
/bettercharacter unlock clothes

Omitting the ID affects the entire category. unlock player Name tops top_36 grants a personal license but does not remove disable. lock on only enables the license system; use lock clothes as well to require licenses for all clothing.

Requiring Better Character skins

/bettercharacter force on
/bettercharacter force off

ON requires the mod's skin and hides the ON/OFF toggle. OFF restores player choice; it does not automatically disable the mod or erase appearances. This applies to everyone, including operators and singleplayer, persists per world, and does not change lock, disable or color rules. On modern editions, ON also overrides local skin/model opt-out preferences; OFF respects those preferences again.
