AutoGrow
AutoGrow lets you speed up nearby crops and plants by crouching. It includes configurable growth rules, an optional requirement for the Green Thumb enchantment, and a toggle for each player. With the default settings, growing does not require bone meal, special equipment, or an enchantment.
How to use it
Stand on the ground near a plant and crouch with your normal sneak key. Each crouch gives nearby plants a chance to grow. Holding crouch continues with gentler, repeated growth attempts so you dont have to spam the key.
The default range is three blocks horizontally and one block above and below your position (configurable). Growth is chance-based, so plants may need several attempts. Servers and modpacks can change the range, speed, triggers, and requirements.
Press U to toggle AutoGrow for yourself. The key can be changed under the AutoGrow category in Controls. A small HUD icon briefly shows whether AutoGrow is enabled when you toggle it or crouch to grow something.
Supported growth
AutoGrow supports plants that respond to bone meal, along with additional rules for:
- Sugar cane, cactus, and bamboo.
- Melon and pumpkin stems, cocoa, and sweet berry bushes.
- Kelp, vines, nether wart, and chorus flowers.
- Budding amethyst and pointed dripstone.
- Mystical Agriculture crops and supported Applied Energistics 2 growth blocks, when those mods are installed.
Plants that depend on normal growth conditions still need a suitable environment. Support for modded plants depends on their growth behavior or an applicable growth rule.
Holding a grass block in your offhand while crouching also lets you turn nearby dirt into grass blocks.
Green Thumb enchantment
Green Thumb has three levels and can be applied to boots and hoes. It is available through enchanting and villager trades by default.
Wear enchanted boots or hold an enchanted hoe to increase growth range and improve the chance of growth. Green Thumb can also reduce hunger and experience costs when a server enables those costs. Only the highest equipped level applies; bonuses from multiple enchanted items do not stack.
Green Thumb is optional by default. Servers and modpacks can require it and adjust its bonuses.
Configuration and modpack support
World and server owners can configure:
- Growth range, speed, and supported plant categories.
- Crouching behavior and an optional sprinting trigger.
- Required items, equipment, or enchantments.
- Item and resource costs, including hunger and experience.
- Green Thumb requirements and bonuses.
Commands
These commands are available without operator permissions:
/autogrow toggle— Enable or disable AutoGrow for yourself./autogrow status— Check whether AutoGrow is enabled./autogrow inspect— View growth rules and restrictions for the block you are looking at.
Operator commands:
/autogrow reload— Reload server settings and growth rules./autogrow toggle <player>— Toggle AutoGrow for another player.
Troubleshooting
Server settings may require equipment, charge a cost, or disable certain plants or game modes. Protected areas can also prevent growth. AutoGrow checks affected positions through interaction permissions and block-break protection hooks, including positions where growth creates blocks. Compatibility depends on the server's protection mods but generally will respect FTB Teams and Open Claims as well as other similar mods.
