Description

⚠️ Beta. Arraial is new and actively developed. Back up your worlds and please report bugs on GitHub.

Found an arraial, hire a builder, and watch a Brazilian colonial village grow on its own: from a handful of wattle-and-daub huts around a wooden cross to a whitewashed Cidade with a chapel, a fountain, a town council and neighbours to trade (or go to war) with.

🏘️ Villages that live

  • 16 trades, each with its own workstation and look: builder, woodcutter, farmer, potter, clay digger, quarryman, herder (vaqueiro), fisher, hunter, flour maker, stallholder, muleteer, apothecary, soldier, engineer and envoy.
  • Real construction: pick a project in the Book of Projects and the builders raise it block by block, with materials from the storehouse. The mayor orders new works by himself.
  • Stages: Povoado → Arraial → Vila → Prosperous Vila → Cidade.
  • People, not mobs: names, surnames, personalities, needs, friendships, rivalries, favours, weddings, children and inheritance.

💰 Economy and politics

  • Réis, a market stall with supply-and-demand prices, peddlers, orders, muleteers between villages, beaten roads and supply contracts.
  • A council of interest groups, proposals and votes, taxes, corruption, protests, and hereditary coronéis.

🗺️ A living region

  • Neighbouring villages appear, grow, migrate, trade, quarrel over land and go to war, even while you are away.
  • Chunk-based territory, border markers, disputes, skirmishes and peace with tribute.
  • The Chancery: a diplomacy screen with the regional map, where you propose treaties, demand tribute or declare embargoes.
  • Abandoned villages fall into ruin, and bandits move in.

🎉 Culture

  • A calendar with festas: Saint John's bonfire and quadrilha, the patron saint, the Great Fair, and each village's own traditions.
  • Crises: drought, flood, pests, highwaymen, epidemics and fire.

🧱 Three eras

Colonial (taipa) → Imperial (brick and clay tiles) → Republican (lime and azulejo). Builders reform houses and streets in each era's style.

📖 Getting started

Craft a Cruzeiro (5 dark oak logs in a cross) and place it: you get the Guia do Arraial, a 49-page in-game manual. Its first chapter walks you through your first days.

Works with JEI (recipes and info pages). Fully translated into Portuguese (Brazil) and English.
