# Araz (The Anomaly)
> *There was a world before this one. It was never finished. It was never
> deleted either — just left in the dark. Something stayed inside it.*
**It doesn't just stalk you. It studies you.**
Araz is a horror mod for Fabric where the creature learns its abilities by
**watching what you do** — and remembers all of it after you quit.
---
## It learns from you
Every ability it gains, it gains because you showed it how:
| You did this | It learned this |
|---|---|
| Opened and closed your door | Doors no longer stop it |
| Walked past your animals unharmed | Your animals matter to you — now they have the wrong eyes |
| Walked among villagers | How to stand among them. One villager too many. |
| Slept | A body can be left behind. It takes yours. |
Everything is saved with the world. It is faster every time you meet it.
Sometimes it takes the animal you are looking at and carries it into the dark
— no teleporting, you watch it happen. And if you have
**Simple Voice Chat** installed, sometimes the voice calling from the dark
is your own.
## The totem will not save you
At the killing blow, it pulls the Totem of Undying out of your hand, blackens
it in its palm, shatters it mid-air — and brings both arms down on you.
A full cinematic. Your camera is locked. Nothing blocks it.
There is exactly one totem in the world it cannot touch. The people who came
before you enchanted it. They still died — but the totem survived. Find it.
## Part I — the story
A first sighting in broad daylight. An abandoned camp with four bedrolls and
zero people. Five recovered notes in five different handwritings, all dead.
A portal ruin at the end of a long corridor — the door it came through,
broken and cold. Reaching it ends Part I. The ruin is guarded: a 30-second
countdown, then a chase down a corridor built for running.
An unfinished thing cannot be killed. It can only be **finished**. Read all
five records, forge **The Last Line** at the altar — while you hold it, Araz
cannot flee. Kill it and it stays dead... until you summon it back.
*Part II — what lies on the other side of that door — is coming.*

## FAQ
**How does voice mimicry work? Is it recording me?**
Only if Simple Voice Chat is installed. The last ~3 seconds of speech are kept
in server memory only — never written to disk, never sent anywhere, deleted
when you disconnect. Remove Simple Voice Chat and the feature is gone; the mod
works fine without it.
**Can I tone it down?** `config/araz.json` has switches for possession,
disguises, block breaking, sleep denial and an encounter-frequency multiplier.
**Beta note:** mechanics are complete and tested in single player. Multiplayer
scaling exists but has had less testing — reports welcome.
