The Great Library of Alexandria

The Library of Alexandria still stands, somewhere in the desert.

Inside are ten scrolls, and every one of them is real history: Herodotus asking why the Nile floods. Euclid's first definitions. Eratosthenes measuring the circumference of the Earth from two shadows. Aristarchus putting the sun at the centre eighteen centuries before Copernicus.

You can't read any of them. They're sealed in a script you don't know.

The librarian will translate, for a price. Five iron for Euclid. Eight lapis for Aristarchus. Four amethyst for Callimachus, who invented the library catalogue. Each translation you buy is yours to keep and read, and it fills one slot in your collection.

One scroll isn't for sale. The account of the fire that took the library in 48 BC costs the Rosetta Stone, and the only Rosetta Stone in the world is at the top of a burning room.

Open the wrong chest and the floor catches. The doors seal behind you, lava climbs the walls, and glowstone rises out of the dark to make a way up. The exit chest is at the top. You have to survive the burning to read about the burning.

Twelve legionaries in gold guard the halls. The library generates naturally in desert village country.

Ten scrolls. Ten translations. One fire.
