SnarkyServer

Let your server tease and antagonize your playerbase. Customize messages, frequency, and more!

SnarkyServer

SnarkyServer gives your Minecraft server a sarcastic personality by occasionally responding to player messages and deaths.

When a player says something in chat or dies in a particularly avoidable way, the server may select an appropriate reply from a configurable list. The plugin recognizes several types of chat messages and death causes, allowing its responses to fit what happened instead of choosing every reply from a single general list.

SnarkyServer is intended for casual servers whose players are comfortable with teasing, insults, and occasional profanity. Every response can be edited, removed, or replaced by the server owner.

Main Features

  • Random responses to player deaths

  • Random responses to selected chat messages

  • Separate message lists for different situations

  • Separate response chances for each category

  • Per-player and server-wide cooldowns

  • Customizable message prefix

  • MiniMessage formatting support

  • Player, message, and killer placeholders

  • Ignored worlds and chat prefixes

  • Permission-based reply bypass

  • Administrative testing commands

  • Automatic configuration migration

  • Optional output discovery for compatible plugins

  • Optional Lightweight Clans clan-chat support

Death Responses

SnarkyServer can distinguish between several causes of death and choose a response written for that situation.

Supported categories include:

  • General deaths

  • Lava

  • Falling

  • Player-versus-player combat

  • Drowning

  • Fire

  • The void

  • Explosions

  • Suffocation

  • Starvation

  • Projectiles

  • Freezing

Each category has its own list of possible replies and its own configurable chance of responding. Missing categories fall back to the general death message list.

For player-versus-player deaths, replies can include both the defeated player and the visible killer.

Chat Responses

The plugin can also recognize several general types of chat activity:

  • General messages

  • Questions

  • Excited messages

  • Greetings

  • Complaints about lag

  • Bragging

  • Confused messages

  • Repeated short-message spam

  • Celebrations

Each chat category has its own message list and response probability. Minimum message length, command handling, spam detection, and cooldown behavior can all be adjusted.

SnarkyServer does not respond to every message. The default chances are intentionally low so that replies remain occasional rather than taking over the conversation.

Fully Editable Messages

All responses are stored in messages.yml. Server owners can add, remove, or replace messages without changing the plugin.

The following placeholders are available:

  • {player} — the player who triggered the response

  • {message} — the player’s original chat message

  • {killer} — the killer’s name when available

MiniMessage formatting is supported, allowing colors and other supported text formatting to be used in replies.

The included messages contain insults and partially censored profanity. Server owners should review messages.yml before using the plugin on a family-friendly or public server.

Configuration

SnarkyServer uses three configuration files:

  • messages.yml — reply lists and message formatting

  • chances.yml — response chances for each category

  • triggers.yml — feature switches, cooldowns, filters, prefixes, and external outputs

Server owners can configure:

  • Whether death responses are enabled

  • Whether chat responses are enabled

  • The chance of each response category

  • Per-player cooldowns

  • Global cooldowns

  • Minimum chat-message length

  • Spam detection thresholds

  • Ignored worlds

  • Ignored message prefixes

  • The server reply prefix

  • External plugin outputs

Players with the snarkyserver.bypass permission will not trigger automatic replies.

Plugin Integrations

SnarkyServer can discover supported output events exposed by other plugins through a small manifest included in their plugin file.

Discovered outputs are added to triggers.yml and remain disabled until the server owner enables them. This prevents newly installed integrations from unexpectedly sending messages.

Lightweight Clans can expose its private clan-chat output to SnarkyServer. When that output is enabled, clan-chat messages pass through the same configurable response system as ordinary chat.

Lightweight Clans is not required for the standard features of SnarkyServer.

Commands

/snarkreload

Reloads the SnarkyServer configuration files.

Permission: snarkyserver.reload

/snarktest

Provides administrative testing and diagnostic options for categories, forced replies, cooldowns, and discovered outputs.

Permission: snarkyserver.test

Available test options include:

  • list

  • status

  • death

  • chat

  • random

  • cooldowns

Permissions

  • snarkyserver.bypass — prevents a player from triggering automatic replies

  • snarkyserver.reload — allows configuration reloads

  • snarkyserver.test — allows use of testing and diagnostic commands

These permissions are restricted to server operators by default.

Requirements

  • Paper 26.2

  • Java 25 or newer

SnarkyServer is a server-side plugin. Players do not need to install anything.
