Sword Block BE | Bring Classic Sword Blocking Back to Minecraft Bedrock!
Sword Block BE is a standalone Minecraft Bedrock add-on that restores classic sword blocking, complete with custom first-person and third-person animations, damage reduction, unique enchantments, and support for all seven sword materials!
Inspired by the classic Minecraft combat system, this add-on brings back one of the most recognizable features of older Minecraft without requiring an entire gameplay overhaul.
Before Minecraft's Combat Update, players could raise their swords to defend themselves against incoming attacks. This feature was eventually removed, leaving shields as the primary blocking mechanic.
Sword Block BE brings this classic mechanic back with functional damage protection!
Simply hold the Use Item button while holding a sword to raise it into a defensive position.
While blocking:
-
50% Damage Reduction: Reduce incoming combat damage attributed to mobs and other players by half.
-
Classic Blocking Animations: Watch your sword move into a defensive position, recreating the feel of older Minecraft combat.
-
First-Person and Third-Person Support: Custom sword poses are included for both perspectives.
-
Balanced Movement: Move at 50% of your normal walking speed while blocking, just like the slower defensive movement associated with classic combat.
-
Projectile Protection: Reduce damage from attacks such as arrows when the projectile damage is attributed to an attacking entity.
-
No Mining While Blocking: Prevent accidentally breaking blocks while actively defending yourself.
-
Instantly Return to Combat: Release the Use Item button to lower your sword and resume normal movement.
Blocking does not protect against ordinary environmental damage such as falling, lava, or other damage without an attacking entity.
Every Sword Can Block!
Sword Block BE supports all seven Minecraft sword materials:
-
Wooden Sword
-
Stone Sword
-
Copper Sword
-
Iron Sword
-
Golden Sword
-
Diamond Sword
-
Netherite Sword
You don't need to craft a completely different weapon just to use this feature!
Your existing Minecraft swords are automatically converted into blocking-capable equivalents when they enter your inventory.
The system is designed to preserve important sword information, including durability, custom names, lore, ordinary enchantments, and saved item properties.
The add-on also includes compatible sword crafting recipes, repair support, recycling recipes, and Netherite upgrading.
Your swords retain their normal combat functionality while gaining the ability to defend against attacks.
Two Custom Sword Enchantments!
Sword Block BE doesn't stop at restoring the original blocking mechanic!
It expands classic combat with two custom enchantments and five total enchantment levels, giving players new ways to improve their defensive abilities. to use the enchantments, hold the custom enchantment book and click on the anvil or it wont work.
Blocking I, II & III
The Blocking enchantment increases the percentage of incoming combat damage your sword can prevent.
At Blocking III, your sword can prevent up to 68% of qualifying incoming combat damage!
This makes the enchantment especially useful for players exploring dangerous caves, fighting powerful enemies, or surviving large groups of hostile mobs.
Swift Guard I, II & III
One of the biggest disadvantages of sword blocking is how much it slows your movement.
Swift Guard helps solve that problem!
Swift Guard increases your blocking movement speed by 30% compared with ordinary blocking and an extra 10 percent for each level.
This allows you to maneuver around enemies more effectively while keeping your sword raised.
You can also combine Blocking and Swift Guard on the same sword!
That means you can create a weapon that offers both stronger protection and improved mobility.
Enchanted Sword Glint
Custom-enchanted swords also include an enchanted visual effect, with dedicated enchanted item variants and render assets.
These enchantments are stored directly on your sword and appear in its tooltip, allowing you to identify your custom upgrades.
How to Obtain the Custom Enchantments
Sword Block BE includes several ways to obtain and upgrade its custom enchantments in Survival Mode.
you can find them in desert and jungle pyramids, mob dungeons, and abandoned mineshafts.
Higher-level enchanted books can also be found through fishing treasure and traded from the librarian.
All six book variants are available in the Creative inventory.
Applying Your Enchantments
Unlike ordinary Minecraft enchantments, Blocking and Swift Guard use a custom anvil interaction system.
-
Obtain a Blocking or Swift Guard enchanted book.
-
Hold the enchanted book in your hand.
-
Interact with a normal, chipped, or damaged anvil.
-
A custom enchantment menu will appear.
-
Select the sword you want to enchant.
-
Spend the required experience levels to apply the enchantment!
Enchantment Upgrade System
You can upgrade your enchantments by applying additional books.
For example:
-
Apply Blocking I to a sword to receive Blocking I.
-
Apply another Blocking I book to upgrade it to Blocking II.
-
Apply a Blocking II book to upgrade it to Blocking III.
The system prevents lower-level books from downgrading an existing enchantment.
Experience costs:
| Resulting Enchantment | XP Levels Required |
|---|---|
| Blocking I | 3 |
| Blocking II | 6 |
| Blocking III | 9 |
| Swift Guard I | 3 |
| Swift Guard II | 6 |
Custom enchantments are applied using their books and the anvil menu rather than being randomly offered by the vanilla enchanting table.
Texture Pack Compatibility!
One of Sword Block BE's most useful features is its support for ordinary Minecraft sword texture replacements!
Many add-ons introduce custom swords with permanently assigned textures. Unfortunately, this can make them look completely different from the swords in your favorite texture pack.
Sword Block BE takes a different approach.
Instead of bundling replacement sword textures, the add-on references Minecraft's standard sword texture paths.
This means that if you're using a resource pack that changes the standard Minecraft sword textures, Sword Block BE is designed to use those same textures for its blocking-capable swords!
For example:
-
Using classic Minecraft textures? Your swords can retain their classic appearance.
-
Using a medieval-style sword texture pack? The blocking swords can inherit those textures.
-
Using a higher-resolution sword pack? Sword Block BE can reference those replacement images.
-
Prefer ordinary vanilla Minecraft? Your swords can keep their familiar vanilla textures!
Recommended setup: Place your preferred sword texture pack above Sword Block BE's resource pack.
Compatibility is designed around conventional texture replacements. Custom 3D sword models, alternative texture filenames, or special animation systems may require additional compatibility adjustments.
This helps Sword Block BE fit naturally into different Minecraft visual styles without forcing every player to use the same sword artwork.
Designed for Classic Minecraft Fans
Sword Block BE was created for players who miss the simplicity and charm of older Minecraft combat.
Modern Minecraft has introduced plenty of new mechanics, but sometimes the little features are what make the biggest difference.
Being able to raise your sword to defend yourself was one of those features.
Instead of introducing complicated new weapons or completely changing Minecraft's combat, Sword Block BE focuses on restoring that familiar mechanic while expanding it with a small selection of optional enchantments.
The goal is simple:
Bring back the classic combat experience while keeping the freedom and features of modern Minecraft Bedrock Edition.
