Description

Nomadic Player Companion (NPC) — Inspired by Phantasy Star Online's Mag, for Minecraft Bedrock

Bring the iconic Mag companion mechanic from Phantasy Star Online into Minecraft, reimagined as your own Nomadic Player Companion. Your NPC is a small floating Drone companion that follows you everywhere, grows stronger the more you feed it, fights alongside you once it's strong enough, and can even evolve into one of five classic PSO-inspired forms — Bastion, Zephyr, Talon, Oracle, or the legendary balanced Nomad.

This isn't a reskinned pet. It's a full stat-growth system inspired by PSO's original Mag mechanic, rebuilt from the ground up for Minecraft:  raise its stats, watch those stats boost you in real time, unlock a ranged attack, evolve it permanently into one of five unique forms, recolor it any of 16 colors, and even trade it to other players in your world as an item that hatches back into the exact same NPC.

Getting Started

The moment you join a world with this addon active, you'll receive two items:

  • NPC Spawn Egg — use it to summon your NPC. It'll appear floating just off your shoulder and begin following you immediately.
  • NPC Menu — your control item. Use it anytime, anywhere, to open your NPC's control screen. You don't need to be looking at your NPC or standing near it.

Your NPC has infinite effective health — it cannot be killed, by anything. If it's ever destroyed, unloaded too far away, lost across a dimension change, or you die, it automatically re-forms right beside you with everything (stats, XP, color, evolution) fully intact. An Eye of Ender explosion marks the spot when it reappears.

If your NPC ever gets stuck somewhere or seems to have vanished, sneak and use the NPC Menu item to force an instant re-summon.

The NPC Menu

Using the NPC Menu item opens a live preview screen showing your NPC's actual in-game model, with the following options:

Button What it does
Feed NPC Opens the feeding menu (paginated across a few screens) — pick an item from your inventory to feed your NPC
Stat Viewer Shows your NPC's current DEF / POW / DEX / MIND, XP progress toward each stat's next point, total level, and evolution status
Change Color Recolor your NPC to any of 16 colors (Default plus 15 dye colors)
Toggle Stay/Follow Tells your NPC to wait right where it is instead of following you, or resume following — great for base-building or screenshots. This is a short-term positioning tool, not a saved setting: it automatically switches back to following after any respawn (death, dimension change, resummon, rejoining)
Unequip NPC Turns your NPC into a tradeable item (see Trading below) — asks for confirmation first
Guide An in-game reference covering everything below, including the full feeding chart and evolution rules

Stats & Feeding

Your NPC has four stats, each inspired directly by PSO's original MAG system:

Stat Player Effect
DEF Resistance
POW Strength
DEX Speed
MIND Health Boost

Each stat ranges from 0 to 100, with a combined total cap of 200. Once your NPC hits level 200, it can't be fed anymore — it's maxed out.

How feeding actually works

Feeding an item doesn't raise a stat directly. Instead, it adds XP (0–100) toward that stat. Every time a stat's XP fills past 100, it resets to 0 and the stat itself gains +1 real Level. Some items raise one stat while slightly lowering another — just like the real MAG feeding mechanic from PSO.

You can feed your NPC 3 times, then it needs 3 minutes 30 seconds to recharge before you can feed it again (all 3 charges come back together). When your NPC becomes feedable again, you'll hear a distinct "ready" ding.

Feeding Chart

Items are balanced by how hard they are to obtain — common, renewable items give modest boosts with a small tradeoff; rarer items give bigger and/or cleaner boosts. Diamond is the best all-around item, boosting all four stats at once with zero downside.

Item DEF POW DEX MIND
Wheat Seeds +10 +10
Bread +15 +15 -5
Sugar +20 -8
Baked Potato +15 +25 -8
Lapis Lazuli -5 +20
Redstone Dust -8 +30
Cooked Steak / Porkchop +15 +32 -10
Golden Carrot +20 +20
Amethyst Shard -10 +42
Diamond +20 +20 +20 +20

(All values are XP added toward that stat, not instant stat Levels.)

Passive stat effects

Every stat Level matters: for every 20 real Levels in a stat, your NPC grants you +1 tier of that stat's effect (up to tier 5 at 100 Levels). A stat sitting at exactly 0 gives no bonus at all — it only starts contributing once a stat has hit Level 1.

Every 60 seconds, your NPC applies your current tiers to you as buffs lasting 61 seconds:

  • DEF → Resistance
  • POW → Strength
  • DEX → Speed
  • MIND → Health Boost (each tier is one full vanilla Health Boost level — +2 hearts per tier, since that increment is fixed by Minecraft itself)

Photon Bullet — Ranged Combat

Once your NPC's total level reaches 5, it unlocks its own ranged attack: a photon bullet, fired automatically at the nearest hostile mob within 10 blocks every 30 seconds. It only ever targets actual monsters — zombies, skeletons, creepers, and the like — never passive or neutral mobs, and never other players.

Damage scales with your NPC's POW tier (3 + POW tier, so anywhere from 3 up to 8 damage per shot as you feed it POW-boosting items).

The bullet itself is a small teardrop-shaped projectile that always matches your NPC's current color — recolor your NPC and every bullet it fires afterward matches automatically.

Evolutions — Inspired by PSO's Rarest Evolutions

This is the addon's signature feature. Once your NPC's total level reaches 20, it evolves — permanently, and only once, like PSO's rare fourth-tier NPC evolutions:

Condition Evolution
All 4 stats at least level 5 Nomad — the balanced form
Otherwise, whichever stat is currently highest
DEF highest Bastion
DEX highest Zephyr
POW highest Talon
MIND highest Oracle

Nomad is checked first, so feeding evenly early on will likely lock that in before any single stat pulls ahead. To chase one of the specialized forms instead, keep at least one stat under level 5 so Nomad's condition never triggers, and make sure your favored stat stays the highest of the four by the time you hit total level 20.

Evolving only changes your NPC's model — stats, tier effects, and the photon bullet all keep working exactly the same afterward. You can still change your NPC's color anytime, evolved or not; recoloring never resets or undoes an evolution.

Trading NPCs

Your NPC isn't locked to you forever. Using Unequip NPC in the menu turns your active NPC into a brand-new unstackable NPC Egg item — with its stats, XP, color, and evolution all saved directly onto the item itself. The egg's name and lore show a readable summary (evolution, level, full stat breakdown, and color) so anyone holding it can see exactly what they've got before hatching it.

Using an NPC Egg hatches it — spawning an NPC that restores everything stored on that item, owned by whoever used it. Since all of that data travels with the item itself, this means you can genuinely trade NPCs between players: drop the egg in a chest, hand it off, whatever — hatching it on the other end reproduces the exact same NPC, evolution included.

This works between any players sharing the same world or server — it's a real item, so it moves however items normally move between players in Minecraft (chests, drops, trades). It can't travel between separate, unconnected world saves; there's no cross-world transfer.

A few safety notes:

  • Hatching is blocked if you already have an active NPC, so you can't accidentally overwrite one.
  • Unequipping clears your own saved backup data, so the NPC's "identity" now lives only in that egg — you can't unequip it and also keep a duplicate.
  • Your NPC won't be auto-summoned again (on death, dimension change, rejoining, or force-resummon) while you're holding an unhatched egg — you have to deliberately hatch it to get an NPC back.

Compatibility & Notes

  • Requires Bedrock 1.21+ and the Beta APIs experimental toggled OFF.
  • Works in Survival and Creative.
  • Multiplayer-friendly — every player gets their own independent NPC.
  • Your NPC correctly follows you into custom dimensions added by other addons (still a bit buggy in custom dimensions), not just the Overworld/Nether/End — it's driven by wherever you actually are, not a fixed dimension list.
  • No known conflicts with other behavior packs; the addon does not modify vanilla mobs, items, or blocks.
  • This addon does not affect hunger, food, or exhaustion in any way.
