Befriend the animals of Orbis, build each kind a cozy home, and raise a ranch full of friends.
Cozy Tales: Ranching turns Hytale's wildlife into companions. Win an animal's trust with the food it loves, give it a home that suits it, and look after it. Happy animals reward you with eggs, milk, wool, feathers and plenty of stranger things, raise babies, and draw wild visitors of their own kind. There are 40 animals to meet, each with its own house, favourite foods and little habits.

Every wild animal can become a friend. Here is how:
- Hold a food it eats. Look at the animal: if it likes what you are holding, you will see Press F to befriend.
- Crouch and walk up slowly. Running or sprinting startles shy animals and they dash away. Crouching never does.
- Press F to feed it. Most animals trust you after 3 feedings. Shy and wild ones can take up to 6. Its favourite treat counts double.
- Give it a name. When it trusts you, it cheers and you can name it (or skip that and name it later).
Your new friend follows you around, even while you ride. Crouch and press F on it to make it stay put, and do it again to have it follow you.
Frogs only eat a Jar of Crickets, and they are shy: offer it from a few steps away. Cows, chickens, pigs and sheep you have already tamed the normal way can join your ranch too: just press F on them.

Every kind of animal has its own house: a red barn for cows, a hollow oak Rookery for crows and ravens, an igloo for penguins, a glass terrarium for snails, and many more.
- Craft a Ranching Bench at your Workbench (6 logs and 16 plant fiber). It has three tabs: Animal Houses, Feed and Care, and Toys and Decor.
- Craft a house and place it somewhere your animals will like.
- Walk up to it with your friends following you and press F. Everyone of the right kind moves in.
Animals spend the day around their house, go inside to sleep at night, and come back out in the morning.
Upgrade your bench to unlock more houses. Tier 1 covers farm animals and small critters, tier 2 adds more exotic animals, and tier 3 adds wolves, bears, snow leopards, snails, tortoises and meerkats.
The house page

Press F on a house to open its page. From here you can:
- Collect everything your animals have made.
- Show area to light up the house's yard, so you can see what is in reach.
- See what the house needs and what the animals would love nearby. Hover any entry to see exactly what counts (for example "grass nearby, 20 or more blocks").
- Name, locate, call back, move or move out each resident.
- Turn breeding and wild visitors on or off, and give the house its own name.

Each animal has hearts (how much it likes you) and a mood (how happy it is right now).
Hearts grow and never go down:
- Pet each friend once a day: press F with an empty hand.
- Feed it by hand. Foods it likes count more, and its favourite treat counts most.
Happiness comes from a good life:
- A filled Feeding Trough near the house. Hold food and press F on the trough to fill it, and the animals help themselves about once a day.
- A home with everything it needs, and the things it loves close by.
- A daily pet and the odd treat.
Toys make animals happy and count as things they love. They walk over and play with them: the Play Ball, Scratching Post, Hanging Bell, Floating Duck and Climbing Log.
Special feeds from the Ranching Bench give a boost when you hand them over or put them in a trough:
| Feed | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hearty Feed | Keeps an animal fed for longer |
| Sweet Feed | Friendship grows faster for an hour |
| Breeder's Feed | Halves the wait before its next baby |
| Premium Feed | More produce for a while |
Keep an eye on your animals and you will catch their habits: crows admiring a shiny find, bears rolling on their backs, squirrels burying nuts and pigs wallowing in mud. Each one also has a personality, from shy to playful.

Happy grown-up animals living in a house make produce over time, so open the house and press Collect.
- The happier they are, and the more hearts they have, the faster they produce. Even a grumpy animal never stops completely.
- It runs on the game clock. Sleep through the night and wake up to full houses.
- Milk needs an empty Wooden Bucket for each one you collect.
A few of the things your animals make:
- Eggs and milk: eggs, duck eggs, skrill eggs, cow, goat and camel milk.
- Wool and hides: wool, goat hair, rabbit fluff, bison wool, wolf fur, spotted pelts, and shed moose coats that break down into heavy hide.
- Feathers: every feather colour in the game, including the rare blue feathers from bluebirds.
- Treats: truffles, wild honey and mixed nuts.
- Surprises: fox trinkets, shiny pebbles and seed pouches you can open for a random find.
Snails carry magic in their shells, and each kind slowly makes an essence: Ice, Fire, Life, Water, Lightning or Void.

All of it gets used. You can make:
- Raven armour, which sometimes gives your arrows back.
- An Armadillo Shield as tough as iron.
- Tonics that make you fast or fireproof.
- Cozy decor, such as a Feather Vase, Dreamcatcher, Antler Mount and rugs.
- Food, such as Honey Cake, Trail Mix and a Truffle Omelette.
Bat guano fertilises a 3x3 patch of crops. Animals also leave the odd poop pile: press F to tidy it up.

Two happy friends of the same kind who share a house may have a baby. Look for it in the morning.
For a baby to arrive:
- Both parents have at least 3 hearts and are very happy.
- They are asleep inside the same house that night.
- The house has room and everything it needs.
- Breeding is turned on for that house.
Babies grow up over time, and faster when they are well looked after. Each one takes after one of its parents.
Traits are passed down too. An animal can carry up to two, and now and then a baby is born with a brand new one:
| Trait | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bountiful | Makes produce faster |
| Swift Grower | Grows up quicker |
| Fertile | Ready for another baby sooner |
| Affectionate | Hearts grow faster |
| Hardy | Stays happy longer |
| Gourmet | Loves its treats even more |
| Twinborn | Sometimes has twins |
| Efficient Eater | Sometimes eats from the trough for free |
| Lucky | Sometimes makes a bonus product |

A well-kept house attracts wild animals of its own kind. Once more than half of the things they love are nearby, a wild one may wander over to say hello, and you can befriend it right there. The house page shows which loves are still missing. Rather not have visitors at a house? Turn Wild visitors off on its page.
Sometimes something special turns up instead. Rare visitors only come when a house is doing really well, and each one has its own wish:

| Rare visitor | It comes when... |
|---|---|
| Golden Chicken | there are flowers nearby and plenty of corn in the troughs |
| Red Highland Cow | there is hay, and two or more very happy cows |
| Spotted Pig | there is mud, and truffles waiting in the sty |
| Black Sheep | the meadow is close to perfect, with flowers and grass |
| Purple Frog | the pond has lily pads, reeds and a couple of frogs |
| Moonlit Camel | there are cacti and two or more very happy camels |
| Slate Goat | there are rocks to climb and leaves to nibble |
| Golden Mouse | there is a grain patch, and seed pouches waiting in the cottage |
| Snowy Rabbit | there are carrots or lettuce, flowers and two or more rabbits |
| Ice Bat | there is ice near a happy bat roost |
| Storm Snail | there is water near a happy terrarium with two or more snails |
Snail shells depend on where they live:
- Garden Snails hatch near flowers and crops.
- Tide Snails hatch near water.
- Void Snails come only from a Frost and a Magma parent.

Foxes, wolves, bears, snow leopards and hawks are too wild to take food from your hand. Calm them first:
- Craft a Bait Bowl and place it.
- Hold some bait and press F on the bowl to fill it.
- Step back and wait. A wild predator nearby will smell it, come over and eat.
- While it is calm, it leaves you and your animals alone. Crouch, walk up slowly and feed it by hand as usual. Every feeding keeps it calm a little longer.
Don't hit it or sprint at it, or it will run off!
| Predator | Bait |
|---|---|
| Fox | Raw Chicken, Raw Fish or Raw Wildmeat |
| Wolf | Raw Wildmeat, Raw Beef or Raw Pork |
| Bear | Wild Honey, Raw Fish, Wild Berries or Apple Pie |
| Snow Leopard | Raw Wildmeat, Raw Fish or Raw Chicken |
| Hawk | Raw Wildmeat, Raw Chicken, Raw Beef or Raw Pork |

The Rancher's Journal fills in as you go. It has a page for every animal you meet: what it eats, where it lives, what its house needs, what counts as each thing it loves, how to find every look, and the habits you have seen. There is also a page of traits, a book of memories, a "How to ranch" guide and your own settings for ranch messages and sounds. Right-click to open it.

The Rancher's Ledger is a book you place on a table. Press F on it to see every house, who lives where, what is waiting to be collected and where each of your animals is.
Need everyone in one place? Blow the Herding Horn and your animals nearby come running.
