# Zone Voice

**Walk out of Tirisfal Glades into Silverpine Forest, and in Discord you are instantly sitting with the people who are there too.**

Zone Voice switches your Discord voice channel along with the zone you are in. No manual clicking, no "where are you guys?", no companion app. Install the addon, link your Discord once in the WoW options, and the rest happens by itself.

Made for the launch of **WoW Forever** by Emre (Morrog), so you can play with your guild and your viewers as if you were sitting next to each other.

## What you need

1. **This addon.**
2. **A guild that runs Zone Voice.** Your guild leader links the guild to the Discord server once (Guild > Guild Settings > Guild Control > Discord Settings) and runs the free Zone Voice bot. The guide for that is on GitHub (link at the bottom).
3. **Your own Discord linked in WoW:** Options > Social > Discord > Connect. This is Blizzard's own feature. The addon does not do this for you and never sees any of it.

## How it works for you

1. Install the addon and log in. A welcome window appears.
2. In Discord, join the voice channel **Azeroth** (the lobby).
3. Click **Test** in the welcome window, or type `/zv test`. The bot sends you a DM: *Connected!*
4. Play. When you enter a new zone, a few seconds later you are in the matching voice channel.

Need a break? Type `/zv off`. You go back to the lobby and the addon stays quiet until you type `/zv on`.

## Commands

The in-game messages are currently in Dutch. The Dutch command names (`aan`, `uit`, `paneel`, `kanaal`, `welkom`) work as well.

## How it works under the hood

WoW addons cannot open network connections. Zone Voice therefore uses the Discord link that Blizzard built into the game itself (since patch 12.1, also in WoW Forever). The addon sends a short message to guild chat, for example `[ZV] 1420 Tirisfal Glades`. Blizzard posts that message in the linked Discord channel under your own Discord account. The Zone Voice bot reads it and moves you. The `[ZV]` messages are hidden in your own chat.

The message is only sent on your next key press or click. Blizzard only forwards messages that come directly from a player action. While playing, you will not notice this at all.

## Safety and privacy

This matters, so in plain language:

- **The addon only sends your zone.** A map number and the zone name. Never your character name, your exact position, your chat or anything else. Blizzard attaches your Discord account, not the addon.
- **Only to your guild.** Guild chat or the guild's Discord channel. Public channels such as Trade are deliberately not an option.
- **Not a keylogger.** The addon notices that you pressed a key, so it is allowed to send the waiting message. It never looks at which key it was; the code does not even have a variable for it. This is only active for the few seconds after a zone change. Besides, you type your password in the launcher, before any addon is loaded.
- **Verifiable.** One Lua file, no compiled code. Type `/zv debug` and you see everything the addon sends, live.
- **The bot can only move you.** Nobody can send a message on someone else's behalf, and the bot never pulls anyone out of a private voice channel.

## Good to know

- The addon reports a new zone after 3 seconds, with at least 4 seconds between reports. That stops you bouncing back and forth along zone borders.
- Caves and mines belong to their zone. Dungeons and battlegrounds get their own channel.
- Nothing is sent during combat. The addon reports as soon as combat ends.
- If WoW says the addon is out of date, tick *Load out of date AddOns*.
