Upgrade Tooltip by DistillNote

Shows an item's upgrade % for your spec on its tooltip, from the free sim's stat weights.

Upgrade Tooltip by DistillNote

Hover an item and its tooltip says how much it would change your damage: Estimate: +3.2% for Arms (PvE). Green is an upgrade, red a downgrade.

The number is the same DPS change the free sim at distillnote.com/sim shows for that item, worked out from the sim's stat weights for your spec. The data ships inside the addon, so it works offline and sends nothing anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Install the addon with the CurseForge app, or unpack the zip into your game client's AddOns folder.
  2. Hover an item in your bags, at a vendor, as a quest reward or in a chat link. The line sits at the bottom of the tooltip.
  3. Hold Shift for the detail: every spec of your class, both slots for rings, trinkets and one-handers, and the DPS behind the %.

What it shows

  • Your spec is the talent tree with the most points. Before your first talent point it uses our leveling pick for your class. You can choose a spec in the settings.
  • Under level 60 it uses the level-60 weights and says so. You can turn the line off below 60.
  • "+ effect not rated": the item has an equip or use effect, or is part of a set, which the weights don't measure. "not rated": it has nothing else.
  • No line for healer specs (there's no healer sim yet), for items your class can't use, for the item you're wearing, and on the comparison tooltips.
  • No PvP estimate yet.

When your game is updated after the addon's data, or the data is over three weeks old, the addon says so once in your chat window. The numbers still show; update the addon in the CurseForge app.

Settings and commands

In the game's options under AddOns, or with /dnup:

  • Spec: Automatic, or one of your class's specs. Saved for each class on your account.
  • Show every spec in the tooltip without holding Shift.
  • Show the estimate under level 60.

Commands: /dnup opens the settings, /dnup spec <name> chooses a spec (/dnup spec auto goes back to Automatic), /dnup debug shows what the addon can read in your game client, /dnup help lists the commands.

What it reads, and what it doesn't

It reads your equipped gear, your talents, your class and level, and the tooltip the game is already showing. It never reads your character's name, realm or bags, and it sends nothing anywhere. Its settings hold only the choices above.

Where the numbers come from

The stat weights and item records come from the WoW Forever sim engine that the free sim at distillnote.com/sim runs. The method is on distillnote.com/sim/help. The engine's MIT notices ship in the zip (NOTICE-engine.txt).

Free and complete. The code is plain Lua, MIT licensed.
