ThuleFriendNearAlert notifies you when a friend is near you without requiring friendly nameplates.
The addon detects proximity using zone and subzone information from the friends list and can optionally alert you when a friend speaks nearby using say, yell, or emote chat messages. This makes it useful even when friendly nameplates are disabled.
Features
- Alerts when a friend is in the same zone
- Optional stricter subzone detection
- Optional nearby chat detection (say, yell, emote)
- Configurable alert cooldown per friend
- Adjustable polling interval
- Customizable sound notification
- Chat message and on-screen error display support
- Works with WoW friends and Battle.net friends currently playing WoW
- No friendly nameplates required
How It Works
The addon periodically scans your friends list for online characters and compares their reported area with your current zone or subzone. If a match is detected, an alert is triggered.
For close-range confirmation, the addon can also trigger when an online friend uses say, yell, or emote near you.

Limitations
World of Warcraft does not provide a direct distance-based proximity API for arbitrary players. This addon relies on zone and subzone data from the friends list and nearby chat events to approximate proximity.
