StartWriting

A lightweight roleplay editor for WoW Retail with a movable, resizable translucent window, live emote colours and optional local German spelling and grammar hints.

Features

• Write longer posts with mouse selection, copy and paste, undo and redo.
• Highlight <emotes>, *emotes* and **emotes** while typing. In the Emote channel, dialogue inside straight double quotes uses the Say colour.
• Insert complete WoW links with Shift-click or drag an item onto the editor.
• Adjust background opacity, font size and line spacing.
• Keep your draft when closing the window.
• Recall the complete last submitted post with Alt+Up or Last text in an empty editor. Loading it never sends it automatically.
• Recover unfinished contributions through Unsent text.
• Enable automatic local German checking, with right-click suggestions and a persistent personal dictionary.

Getting started

Press Enter, left-click the minimap button or type /startwriting or /swriter to open the editor.

Right-click the Chat tab or minimap button to open the options. You can independently enable or disable Open with Enter and Check German.

Choose a channel beside the text, or use a prefix such as /e , /s , /p , /g , /raid or /w Name .

Ordinary game and addon commands continue to use WoW’s command parser.

Longer contributions

StartWriting splits longer contributions into messages that fit WoW’s limits, keeping complete links together. You can continue writing while an earlier contribution is being sent.

Eligible group and private channels are paced automatically. Say, Yell and numbered channels can require another deliberate keypress to continue. WoW’s channel restrictions and throttling still apply.

Drafts, settings and recovery text persist when WoW saves them during normal logout or /reload. A hard crash before saving can lose recent changes. Retained text is not a delivery receipt; check uncertain parts against chat before sending them again.

Optional integrations

Total RP 3: locally stored roleplay names can be recognised by the language checker. Narrate / Emote without name (TRP) uses TRP’s corresponding display feature; recipients need that feature to hide the leading name in their display. Sender information remains available.

UnlimitedChatMessage: optional integration.

Other players do not need StartWriting. Other chat addons and message splitters may require their own compatibility check.

Compatibility

For World of Warcraft Retail 12.1.0.

German clients use German interface text; other clients use English. The optional language checker checks German. No additional addon or external application is required.

Readable source and attribution are included. Program code is licensed under GPLv2-only, with retained component notices and a separately licensed CC BY-SA 4.0 morphology dataset. See the included license files for details.

For bug reports, please include your addon version, chat channel, other chat addons and steps to reproduce the problem. Use an invented example instead of private roleplay text or profiles.
