SpeakinSpell: Reeee

You can say things in chat when casting any spell or ability. Configurable.

New version (2.30.0) uploaded.

Your character says things. You decide what, and when.

SpeakinSpell watches what happens to you in game and speaks a line you wrote for it. Cast a spell, take a killing blow, hit exalted, ride a mount, meet a friend coming online: any of it can carry a voice. You write the lines. The addon handles when, where, and to whom.

Built for Midnight (12.1). Works with every class, race and spec.

What it can do

Speak for you

Over a thousand combinable, modular triggers ship configured, and the addon records new ones as it sees them. Spellcasts, auras gained and lost, combat start and end, death, resurrection, level up, loot, achievements, zone changes, boss kills and wipes, vendors, quest-givers, trade, mail, group joins and leaves, guild roster changes, channel joins, interrupt streaks, and an immense tail besides.

Every collected mount, pet and toy is seeded into the list before you use it, so you can write a line for a mount you have never ridden.

Say it the way you meant it

Random lines. Give a trigger ten speeches and it picks one. Set how often it fires, and how long it waits before firing again.

Conditions on the line, not the trigger. One event, many voices:

<zone:Silvermoon City> only in that city
  <when:night> only after dark
  <while:combat> only in a fight
<at:hostile> only on an enemy target
<in:instance> only inside a dungeon or raid
<cast:failed> only when the cast failed
<recalls:fed> only if your pet remembers you fed it

Write them by hand or pick them from a dropdown beside the edit box.

Substitutions. Drop <who:target>, <who:player>, <place:home>, your own random substitution lists, and around fifty others into any line.

Sound. <sound:38765> plays a client sound kit, on its own or alongside text on the same line. Other users with the same sound+text speech will hear it as well.

Emotes and slash text. A speech may be an emote, or may carry a WoW slash command, and the addon routes it correctly.

Know what it will do before it does it

It says, in English. Every event reads back as a sentence: what fires it, and where the line goes right now, whether you are solo, in a party, or in a raid.

Live preview. See the line resolved against your current target and zone, above the box you are typing it in.

Rehearsal. Set a scene, play a speech into it, and read exactly what would have gone out and by what road. Nothing is sent.

Recent. A feed of the last forty things that happened, newest first, so you can write for the thing you just did without searching thirteen hundred rows.

Choose where it goes

Say, yell, emote, party, raid, instance, guild, officer, whisper, raid warning, and numbered channels. Set a different destination for solo, party, raid, arena and battleground, on any event.

Channel groups. Name a set of channels and post to all of them at once.

Check to send. Hold any speech, or all of them, until you press a key. Read it, then send it.

Colours. Per-channel colours for what the addon prints back to you.

Companions that talk back

Dialogue trees. Talk to your battle pet. The pet's half goes to your own chat only; your reply is the part anybody else sees.

Memory. Each pet remembers what you did, by individual rather than by species, account-wide. No affection score, so there is no right answer and nothing to optimise. Conditions can read what a pet remembers.

Nudges. When you walk somewhere your companion has something to say about, it lets you know.

Handshakes. Two SpeakinSpell users standing together can run a paired companion scene, carried as a visible emote that reads as roleplay to everyone else. (Currently turned off for final testing)

An editor, so you can write your own trees.

Broadcasts

Six families of public post with one button each: adverts, carries, care services, group notices, fun, and life. Destinations are fixed by the command, so a carry advert cannot stray into General by accident, and hard rate floors are on screen rather than discovered by being refused or chatbanned.

Share

Sync speeches and event hooks with other SpeakinSpell users, by group or by target. Everything received is filed under the sender's name. If somebody floods you, ignore them, and forget what they already sent. Your ignore list stays on your machine and is never shared.

Adult content, gated

Flirt safely. Mark a speech as adult and mark a channel or a whisper target adult, and only then will that speech leave. Both halves are required. Marking a group of channels never grants permission to a member that was not already marked.

Chat response

  • Answers !key and !keys in party and raid with your keystone link.

  • Answers !professions or !profs in party, raid, or guild with your profession links. (Currently turned off for final testing)

  • Answers !spec in guild with your current specialisation and talent link. Also works in party or raid, but uh, why? (Currently turned off for final testing)

  • Answers !neighbourhood or !neigh in guild, party, or raid with your current neighbourhood endeavours. (Currently turned off for final testing)

Honest limits

Blizzard restricts chat from addons, heavily, and more so in instanced content.

  • Inside instance combat, no addon can send to chat by any road. SpeakinSpell does not queue those and dump them afterwards; the line is refused and you are told why, once.
  • Outside that, blocked sends fall back to one of three prompts: the line written into your chat box ready for Enter, a macro key you press, or a clickable link in your own chat. Pick one in General Options. The link needs no action bar slot.
  • Numbered channels always need a prompt. Say, yell and emote often do.
  • Aura conditions mostly do not work inside instances. Patch 12.1 makes buffs unreadable to addons through combat, encounters, keystones and rated PvP. An event gated on a buff will usually not fire in a dungeon, and the addon refuses rather than guessing. That all said, I've tried some jury-rigged workarounds.
  • Localisation is incomplete. The interface is translated into German, French, Korean and Simplified Chinese, but recent features are English-only, and zone conditions use English zone names.
  • Testing is currently incomplete, and this is being released "crash prevention" ready, so folks can update from 2.0.8. Some features here are turned off until that's complete.
  • Incredibly incomplete changelog.

Getting started

  1. Install and log in. You will find three starter speeches already written, and the addon will tell you where they are.
  2. Play for a few minutes. Cast things. The addon records what it sees.
  3. Type /ss to open the panel, or click the minimap button.
  4. Press Create New, pick something from the list, and press Create.
  5. Write your lines. Set the frequency and the cooldown. Choose where it goes.
  6. Press Rehearse if you want to see it land before anyone else does.

Upgrading from an older version

Saved data migrates on login. Speeches written against older formats are converted in place, and the conversion is recorded per patch rather than per version number, so nothing is skipped and nothing runs twice.

If you have speeches that never seemed to fire, run /ss repair. Older builds could create a variant key the addon would never look up, which looked correct in the list and had never once spoken.

Optional packs

Separate downloads. Install only the ones you want.

  • Defaults. The shipped starter speech library.
  • Companions. Dialogue trees and arrival emotes for lore-rich battle pets, written for any player rather than any one character.
  • Factions. Voice packs for eighty-four Warcraft organisations across fifteen spheres: the old Horde, the Alliance kingdoms, the Dragon Isles and Khaz Algar factions, the class orders, the Covenants, the cartels, the cults, and the various people trying to end the world. One faction per character.
