Summary

Are you tired of breaking immersion just to zoom your minimap in/out? Smart Minimap Zoom automatically adjusts your minimap zoom as you approach quest objectives, tracked points of interest, and combat.

Description

Smart Minimap Zoom is a World of Warcraft Retail addon that makes the minimap react to what you are doing nearby. When you approach supported quest objectives or tracked points of interest, it zooms the minimap in. When you move away, complete the objective, turn in the quest, or clear the trigger, it zooms back out.

The default setup is tuned for questing first: tracked quests, quest objectives, tracked POIs, Smart Range Zoom, Quest Area Zoom, Smooth Zoom, and Combat Zoom are enabled. Broader POI sources are grouped under Experimental settings and are disabled by default as they can require additional setup depending on your preferences, mainly with the priority of which POI will get the zoom over other POI's when you are near multiple.

Features

  • Automatically zooms the minimap in near supported quest objectives and tracked POIs.
  • Restores the configured zoom-out level when the active trigger is gone.
  • Uses Smart Range Zoom to pick a minimap zoom level based on how far away the active POI is.
  • Uses Quest Area Zoom to keep quest-area bubbles readable instead of always zooming all the way in.
  • Supports Smooth Zoom, which steps through minimap zoom levels instead of jumping instantly.
  • Includes optional Combat Zoom for players who want a closer minimap during combat.
  • Respects manual minimap zoom changes while a trigger is active.
  • Pauses automatic zoom while you are on a flight path taxi.
  • Uses separate trigger and release distances to prevent rapid zoom flicker.
  • Chooses the highest-priority trigger when multiple POIs are nearby.
  • Includes optional chat logging so you can see why the addon zoomed in or out.

Supported By Default

  • Tracked quests
  • Quest objectives
  • Tracked map pins
  • Tracked rares or treasures
  • Tracked corpse recovery
  • Other tracked targets WoW is actively pointing toward
  • Combat Zoom

Experimental POIs

Smart Minimap Zoom also includes optional settings for additional POI types, but these are disabled by default:

  • User map pins
  • World quests and bonus objective areas
  • Rares and encounter stars
  • Treasures
  • Special vignette markers
  • Delves
  • World events
  • Quest hubs
  • Races
  • Flight points
  • Corpse recovery

These sources depend more heavily on what the WoW addon API exposes in the current zone, phase, quest state, and map context. If you enable Experimental POIs, Chat Logging is recommended so you can tune priorities and distances.

Settings

Open the options panel with:

/smz

Also supported:

/smartminimapzoom
/smz on
/smz off
/smz test
/smz reset
/smz status
/smz stats
/smz ranges
/smz log on
/smz log off

Each POI type can be configured with:

  • Enabled or disabled
  • Zoom In level
  • Zoom Out level
  • Trigger distance
  • Release distance
  • Priority

Zoom level 0 is farthest out. Higher numbers zoom in. Trigger distance starts zoom-in, and release distance is the farther distance used to zoom back out.

Unsupported Minimap Dots

Profession nodes like herbs, ore, fishing pools, and arbitrary minimap tracking dots are not direct triggers. The game client may show these on the minimap, but addons generally do not receive reliable live coordinates for every tracking blip. SmartMinimapZoom only reacts to POIs the addon API exposes with usable positions or distances.

Known Limitations

Some POI sources only return usable data in the right zone, phase, quest state, or map context. This is a limitation of the WoW addon API rather than a setting problem. The default profile is intentionally quest-focused because quest objectives and tracked POIs are the most reliable sources in regular gameplay.

Indoor areas, caves, delves, phased areas, and multi-floor maps may still need in-game tuning because Blizzard does not always expose reliable vertical position data for every POI.
