Route Alert

🧭 Plot a route on the world map and follow it: a bright blue line on the map and minimap, a guide arrow, chimes at each stop, auto-planning (also through GatherMate2 nodes), and routes that steer around steep cliffs.

What's new

1.14.0

  • Easy to pick up the first time. While your route is empty, the route window says what RouteAlert does and walks you through your first route in three steps. Buttons say what they do in plain words: Add stops on the map, Add a stop where I stand, Find the best order, Skip stop, Head here next and Go round in a loop, and "waypoints" are now "stops" everywhere. The buttons for a stop stay greyed out until you click one in the list, with a line saying so. A ? next to the close button explains the whole idea, and the options page says it too.
  • Hover over anything to see what it does. Every button, tick box and slider in the route window, the options, the world map toolbar and the world map menu has a tooltip, and so does each tab and each stop in your list (a detour point says why it's there). Clicking the words next to a tick box ticks it too.
  • Route my RestedXP guide. One click turns the next directions in your RestedXP guide into your route: the places its arrow sends you, kept in guide order, going around steep ground and your avoid areas, with the walk-or-fly choice when a flight saves time. Map markers without an arrow (a mob area, say) are left out, and the route stops before a flight, hearthstone or boat, since you don't walk those; press it again afterwards for the next stretch. Undo plan brings back the route you had. It's on the Route tab (when RestedXP is running), the new Guides tab, the world map menu, and /ra rxp [n]. /ra rxp add [n] still adds them to the end of your route without routing. Set how many directions to take on the Guides tab.
  • Quest Targets with Route my RestedXP guide. With Quest Targets installed (it brings the QuestieDB quest database), a guide step that says to kill or loot something but has no arrow now gets a stop of its own in the route, in the middle of the nearest camp of those mobs, named like Kill: Bristleback Quilboar or Loot: Tough Wolf Meat. Objectives you've already finished are left out. While you follow a route made from your guide, RestedXP's guide window and arrow are hidden so RouteAlert's arrow is the one to follow, and with Quest Targets running RestedXP's target window is hidden too and Quest Targets targets the guide's mobs instead. Everything comes back as you had it when you clear, finish or undo the route. Turn it off with Hide RestedXP while I follow a route made from it on the Guides tab, or /ra rxp hide off.
  • The way to your next RestedXP step, all the time. With RestedXP running and no route of your own going, RouteAlert shows the way to where your guide sends you next, just like the way back to your body after you die: a gold line on the world map and the minimap, going around steep ground and your avoid areas, and the guide arrow pointing along it with the yards and about how long. It is worked out again as you move and follows your guide on to each next direction. It steps aside while you follow a route of your own (a finished route doesn't count) and while you're dead, and shows nothing when your guide says to take a flight, hearthstone or boat next. Turn it off with a ctrl-right-click on the guide arrow, from the minimap button's menu, on the Guides tab or with /ra rxp off (/ra rxp on brings it back).
  • Pick any of your RestedXP guides and route it. The new RestedXP guides window lists all your guides the same way RestedXP's own guide menu does: by group, then subgroup, with the one RestedXP is on in green. Click a guide to see how many steps it has and where you got to, then pick the step to start at and how many directions to take, and press Route it (or Add to my route). Switch RestedXP to this guide too (on by default) moves RestedXP to that guide and step as well, so its window, its arrow and the gold line follow the same guide. Open in RestedXP just switches RestedXP. Open the window from Pick a RestedXP guide... on the Guides tab, the world map menu, the options, the minimap button's menu or /ra rxp guides.
  • The minimap button has a menu, like RestedXP's. Right-click it for your RestedXP guides (by group, one click opens the guide in the guides window), the route window, Route my RestedXP guide, the guide arrow on or off, following RestedXP on or off, skipping a stop, and Options....
  • More detailed options. A new Arrow tab: show it, lock it in place, the dark box behind it, the turn line and the extra line, hiding it in a fight or on a flight path, its size and opacity, and putting it back in its starting place. A new RestedXP tab with every RestedXP setting in one place, including whether kill and loot spots are added and whether a guide you pick switches RestedXP too. Buttons at the top open the route window and the RestedXP guides, General can turn off the walk-or-fly offer, and Reset all settings puts every setting back (your routes, places, spots and avoid areas stay).
  • A switch for every feature. Everything RouteAlert does now has a setting in the options, on to start with so nothing changes until you untick it, and Reset all settings puts them all back. General: the getting-started help in an empty route window, tooltips on RouteAlert's buttons, the arrow and its menus (the names of map icons and stars still show), letting your group send you routes, and Best order: pick up my gathering spots on the way. Arrow: what a click, a right-click and a shift-click on the arrow do, and the help line under them only lists what's on. Route line: what shows on the world map (your route, favorite place stars, gathering spots and avoid areas), each still showing while you use its own tool. Map & terrain: whether a click on a quest icon in the map tools snaps to it, whether a stop you add on the map goes before your RestedXP guide, clicking a star to head there, dragging to draw a line, and the button in the world map's corner. RestedXP: how many objectives Add Questie objectives adds (10 to start).
  • Shift-click the guide arrow to open your RestedXP guide, and shift-click again to hide it. It works while you follow a route made from your guide too, and RestedXP goes back to how you had it when the route ends. While the arrow shows the way to your next RestedXP step, right-click it to skip that step in RestedXP, the same as skipping a stop in your own route (not during a fight).
  • Turn cues: hear which way to go. A short sound plays when you need to turn left, turn right or turn around to follow the arrow, and a soft chime when you're facing the right way again, so you can follow a route (or the way back to your body, or to your next RestedXP direction) without watching the arrow. RouteAlert brings its own cue sounds: the left and right beeps play mostly in that ear. A cue only plays once the way to turn has held for a moment, so swinging the camera round doesn't set one off, and it stays quiet in a fight, on a flight path and right by the stop. Pick each cue's sound (any of RouteAlert's sounds) or turn the cues off on the Alerts tab of the options, or with /ra turns off and /ra sound left|right|back|ahead <n>. The game-sound list also gained the four cue sounds for arrivals and gathering spots.
  • Click a quest on the world map to head there. With no map tool on, click a Questie or RestedXP quest icon, or pick a quest in the map's quest list, and it becomes your next stop: the arrow heads there now, and your route or RestedXP guide carries on once you've been. Pick another quest and it takes the place of the first. Once you reach it (or skip it) it leaves your route, so a loop or a saved route doesn't keep it. Ctrl-click and shift-click still do what Questie does with them, and dragging the map doesn't count. Turn it off with Clicking a quest on the world map heads there on the Map & terrain tab of the options, or in the world map menu under Show.
  • A spot you pick on the map comes before your guide. While you follow a route made from your RestedXP guide, a stop you add on the world map (a click, or a Questie or RestedXP icon) now goes in front of the guide's stops still to come, so the arrow heads there right away and the guide carries on once you've been. Before, it went to the end of the route and the arrow stayed on the guide.
  • Click a quest icon to add that quest. While adding stops on the world map, click a Questie or RestedXP icon (a quest to pick up or turn in, a mob or item to get, a guide pin) and the stop goes right on it, named after the quest, like Pick up: The Kodo Hunt or Bristleback Quilboar (Quilboar Trouble). Hover an icon first and a tooltip says what a click will add. It works the same when dropping favorite place stars. Clicking anywhere else adds a stop where you click, as before.
  • Tidier route window. Four tabs: Route, Map tools (best order, gathering spots, favorite places and avoid areas, each with a line saying what it's for), Guides (RestedXP, Questie and GatherMate2, saying whether each is running) and Saved & share. The More... menu is gone; everything in it is on the other tabs, and an Options button takes its place. The world map toolbar says Add stops and Route window, and the help line at the top of the map wraps instead of running out of its box.
  • Finding the best order no longer lists flights in chat; the walk-or-fly box already says which flights to take.
  • Favorite places, as gold stars on the map. Turn on Favorite places (on the world map toolbar, in the map button's right-click menu, or on the Map tools tab) and click the map to drop a star, then give it a name. Hover a star to see its name and click it to head there: it becomes your only stop, and Undo plan brings back the route you had. Stars also show on the continent map. Your places get their own Favorite places section on the Saved & share tab with Go, Rename and Del, and a Go to a favorite place section in the map button's menu. Every character on your account sees them. You can also type /ra place [name] to add one where you stand, /ra places to list them and /ra go <place> to head to one.
  • Mark spots is now Gathering spots, so it's clear those green dots are for herbs, ore and other nodes you want an alert near.
  • Favorite routes. Click the star next to a saved route on the Saved & share tab to make it a favorite. Favorites get their own section at the top of the list, and a Load a favorite route section in the world map button's right-click menu loads one with a click. Like all saved routes, favorites are shared by every character on your account. Click the star again, or type /ra fav <name>, to unstar a route. /ra routes lists favorites first. While the list is empty, it says how to add a place or save a route.
  • More options, like other waypoint addons have. A new More options page (under RouteAlert in the game's AddOns options, or the More options button at the top of RouteAlert's options) has settings from TomTom, Zygor, Mapster and the like. They all start off, so nothing changes until you tick one:
    • Colour the arrow by which way to turn: green when you face your stop, gold to the side, red when it's behind you.
    • Show how long it takes to get there: "about 0:45" after the distance, from how fast you've been closing in. Nothing shows while you head away.
    • Show the distance in metres instead of yards.
    • Hide it in dungeons, raids, battlegrounds and arenas.
    • Let clicks pass through the arrow, so you can click what's behind it.
    • Skip ahead when I reach a later stop first: reach one of your next five stops before the one the arrow points at (a shortcut, or a flight) and the route carries on from there.
    • Put the game's own map pin on my next stop: the game then shows it on the world map, at the edge of the minimap and, with the game's In Game Navigation on (a tick box for it sits just below), in the world with the distance under it. It moves on with your route, goes on your body while you're a ghost and on your next RestedXP direction when you have no route. A pin you put down yourself is left alone. Also /ra pin.
    • Show coordinates on the world map: yours and the cursor's, in the numbers guides and /way lines use. Also /ra coords.
    • Reset all settings turns these off again too.
  • The guide arrow turns smoothly as you turn, on every frame, instead of in small steps.
  • Lighter on your computer. With the world map open, only your own marker moves a few times a second; the rest of the route is drawn again when something changes, or every few seconds. The minimap route isn't drawn again while you stand still. The ways around steep ground and avoid areas are kept until those change, instead of being worked out again every time you reach a stop, and map positions are looked up once instead of many times a second. In a test, RouteAlert did over 95% less drawing while you stand still with a route going, and about a third less while you move with the world map open.

1.13.2

  • Fixed: in Orgrimmar and the other main cities, a route along the streets got detour stops that climbed out over the city wall. The game's steep-ground data can't see a city's walls, bridges and buildings, and the flat cliff tops around a city look walkable. Inside a city, RouteAlert now follows the stops you picked, and the steep-ground outlines aren't drawn on city maps. Outside a city (Durotar around Orgrimmar, say) routes still go around steep ground.
