RaidnightHelper

A small addon to help with the usage of raidnight

Raidnight Helper

Stop dragging names around the Raid tab. Raidnight Helper puts your raid into the right groups for you. Paste your group plan and press one button, or let the addon build balanced groups from whoever showed up. It invites the players who are missing, remembers the groups for every boss, and evens out the damage of the two halves of your raid after a pull.

Raidnight Helper is the in-game companion to Raidnight, a home for your raid team with sign-ups, per-boss lineups, loot and log recaps. Plan your lineups there and paste them into the game, or use the addon on its own with a plain-text layout or Auto.

It's made for raid leaders and assistants who sort the raid every week and would rather spend that time getting the pull ready.

How it changes the game

In the base game, getting 20 players into the right groups means moving them one at a time in the Raid tab. You do it again for every boss, and again whenever someone leaves or a bench player comes in. Raidnight Helper adds:

  • One window, opened with /rn, showing your raid as groups 1–8 in class colours, with a role icon on every name. Nothing appears on screen until you open it.
  • Buttons that move players for you. Sort raid, Auto, Balance and drag-and-drop use the game's own raid group functions: the same moves you would make by hand in the Raid tab, done for you one at a time.
  • A row of boss icons for the current raid tier, so every boss can have its own saved groups.
  • A few quiet helpers in the background. The addon notes which boss you pulled, saves the raid's groups for that boss (with one line in chat), and checks the spec of hybrid classes so it knows melee from ranged.

It doesn't touch combat, your action bars or your raid frames. Players only move when you press a button or drag a name.

A raid night with Raidnight Helper

  1. Before the raid, you plan the groups on raidnight.io or in any text file, and copy the layout.
  2. In game, type /rn and press Ctrl+V. The groups fill in at once. The preview tells you how many players are in the wrong group, and who on the list hasn't joined yet.
  3. Press Invite missing. Everyone on the list who isn't in the raid gets an invite.
  4. Press Sort raid. Players move into their groups one by one while you get ready for the pull.
  5. Pull the first boss. The addon saves the raid's groups under that boss. Next week, click the boss icon and the same groups come back.
  6. Two of your planned players can't make it tonight? Press Auto. Groups 1–4 are rebuilt from whoever is here, with tanks, healers, melee and ranged split evenly between groups 1+2 and groups 3+4.
  7. The raid splits into two sides on a fight, and one side keeps running short on damage? Press Balance after the pull, and the chat shows something like this:
Raidnight Helper: Last boss pull: groups 1+2 did 46% of the damage, groups 3+4 54%.
Raidnight Helper: Aelrin and Brokka trade places.
Raidnight Helper: After: groups 1+2 50%, groups 3+4 50%.

The two players are moved at once, and the new groups are saved for that boss.

Features

Paste a plan, sort the raid

You paste the plan and the raid sorts itself. No more moving players by hand.

  • Paste plain text, or an RS1: code from raidnight.io (the same layout packed into one line), with Ctrl+V. The groups show up right away.
  • Sort raid moves players one at a time and waits for each move to land before the next. Two players who need to trade groups swap in a single move.
  • In combat, sorting pauses and carries on when combat ends. If the game refuses a move, that player stays put, the rest of the raid is still sorted, and the chat tells you who.
  • A live preview shows who is in the wrong group, who on the list isn't in the raid, and which names could mean more than one player.
  • Invite missing invites everyone on the list who isn't in the raid yet.
  • Names match regardless of case and accents, so Ravena finds Ravéna. Write Name-Realm when two players share a name.
  • Empty slots in groups 1–4 can be filled with unlocked raid members who aren't on the list, picked by role and class.

Drag and drop

You can see the whole raid at once and change it with the mouse.

  • Groups 1–4 show above groups 5–8. Every name has its class colour and a tank, healer, melee or ranged icon. A name turns grey while that player isn't in the raid.
  • Drag a name onto another name to swap the two players, onto an empty slot to move a player there, or to Not on list to take someone off the plan.
  • In a raid, the player moves right away. You don't need to sort again.

Auto: balanced groups at the press of a button

You get fair groups in one click, even when the roster changes at the last minute.

  • Picks groups 1–4 from the whole raid. Players your plan puts in groups 1–4 come first, and everyone else waits in groups 5–8.
  • Groups 1+2 and groups 3+4 each get the same share of tanks, healers, melee and ranged.
  • Damage dealers of the same class are split between the two halves. With two Hunters in the raid, each half gets one.
  • Moves as few players as possible, so the raid isn't shuffled for nothing.
  • Hunters, Shamans, Druids and Demon Hunters are inspected to tell melee from ranged, and the addon notices when someone changes spec.

Example: a raid of 2 tanks, 4 healers, 7 melee and 7 ranged comes out like this:

Group 1: Tank Healer Melee Ranged Ranged Group 3: Tank Healer Melee Melee Ranged
Group 2: Healer Melee Melee Ranged Ranged Group 4: Healer Melee Melee Ranged Ranged

Balance: even out the damage of each half

After a pull, you can see whether one side of the raid is carrying the other, and fix it right away.

  • Reads the damage of the last boss pull (kill or wipe) from WoW's built-in damage meter.
  • Swaps damage dealers between groups 1+2 and groups 3+4 until the two halves are within 5% of each other.
  • Swaps melee for melee and ranged for ranged first, and keeps classes split as Auto does, as far as it can.
  • Tanks, healers and locked players stay where they are.
  • Still finds the last boss pull after a /reload.

Locks

You decide who must never be sorted into the active groups.

  • Click the lock on a name, and that player is kept out of groups 1–4 when sorting and stays put when balancing. Use it for bench players, or for a helper who is only there to open a portal.
  • Raid members who aren't on your plan start locked, so nobody is pulled into the raid by accident.

Boss layouts

Set up a boss once, and the groups come back with a single click every week.

  • Boss icons for the current raid tier come straight from the Encounter Journal. Pick another raid in the dropdown.
  • Save stores the current groups under a boss. Click the boss later to load them again.
  • The boss you pulled last is selected automatically.
  • Every pull saves the raid's groups under that boss (you can turn this off; Raid Finder is skipped).
  • Faded icons have nothing saved yet. Hover an icon to see when its groups were saved.
  • Layouts are saved account-wide and survive addon updates.

Undo

Try Auto or Balance without worry.

  • Undo brings back the groups and locks from before Auto, Balance or filling empty slots changed them.

Text format

Group 1: Brannoc, Elowyn, Fenwick, Isolde, Torvald
Group 2: Ashlyn, Corvain, Dúnmir, Ravéna, Thessaly

One name per line under a Group N line works too, and so do Gruppe, G1 and 1. as headers.

Commands

Command What it does
/rn Open or close the window
/rn apply Sort by the last pasted layout (handy in a macro)
/rn auto Build balanced groups 1–4 by role, and sort
/rn balance Even out the damage of the two halves from the last boss pull, and sort
/rn invite Invite players on the list who aren't in the raid
/rn stop Stop a sort in progress

/raidnight works everywhere /rn does.

Languages

The interface follows your game client: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional).

Good to know

  • You need to be raid leader or assistant to move players.
  • Balance only works out of combat, because the damage meter hides its numbers during combat.
