Description
# NoPolitics
Trade chat is for trading. NoPolitics hides political arguments from your chat and mutes the people who start them, so you can find a tank, sell your mats, or ask a question without wading through the same fights you see everywhere else online.
It doesn't take sides. It hides political talk in general: parties, politicians, elections, culture-war topics, wars and world leaders, and the news outlets people argue about. Everything happens on your screen only. Nobody else is affected, and nobody knows you're using it.
## How it works
When someone posts a political message in a chat you're watching, NoPolitics hides that message and mutes the sender for a while (12 hours by default). While they're muted, you won't see anything they say in public chat. When the mute runs out, they're back.
Out of the box it watches **Trade** and **Services**. You can turn on General, LookingForGroup, Defense, custom channels like World, Say, Yell, whispers, guild, and group chat.
## Features
- **About 980 words and phrases** across 10 topics, including common misspellings and insults. Switch off any topic you don't mind seeing.
- **Catches disguised words** like tr\*mp, t r u m p, b1den, m4ga, and truuuump, without flagging normal chat like "LF1M" or "WTS 4x".
- **Your friends, guild, and group are never filtered** (you can change this), plus an allow list for anyone else.
- **Strikes:** mute people right away, or only after a few political messages.
- **Different mute lengths per channel**, for example 2 hours in General and 12 in Trade. Or just hide the message without muting anyone.
- **A log of the last 100 caught messages.** Read any of them, unmute the sender, or remove the word that caught it in one click.
- **Optional [Show] link** where a hidden message was, if you'd rather peek than lose it.
- **Optional spam filter** for gold sellers, account sellers, and website spam, plus hiding repeated messages.
- **Share mutes** with guildmates or your group who also run NoPolitics. You only accept mutes from players you trust.
- **Right-click any player** to mute them or mark them as never filtered.
- **A full settings window** with a minimap button. Every setting is also available as a chat command.
- **Add your own words**, import and export word lists, and back up or restore everything with one line of text.
- **Per-character settings** if you want different rules on different characters.
## Getting started
1. Install and log in. It's already working in Trade with sensible defaults.
2. Type **/np** or click the minimap button to open the settings.
3. Check the **Chats** tab to pick which chats it watches.
4. After a day of play, look at the **Log** tab. If something got caught that shouldn't have, remove that word right from the log.
## Chat commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| `/np` | Open the settings window |
| `/np help` | List every command |
| `/np on` / `/np off` | Turn filtering on or off |
| `/np test <message>` | Check whether a message would be caught |
| `/np add <word>` | Add a word or phrase |
| `/np remove <word>` | Stop matching a word |
| `/np mute <Name-Realm>` | Mute someone by hand |
| `/np unmute <Name-Realm>` | Unmute someone |
| `/np allow <Name-Realm>` | Never filter this player |
| `/np log` | Show recent caught messages |
| `/np backup` | Back up or restore your settings |
`/nopolitics` works too, in case another addon uses `/np`.
## FAQ
**Will it hide normal messages by mistake?**
Sometimes. A word list can't understand context. Words that are common in WoW chat, like "ice," "racial," "party," "war," and "gun," are left out on purpose or only count alongside other political words. If something gets caught that shouldn't, remove that word from the Log tab or the Words tab. You can also use `/np test` to check a message first.
**Does it lean one way politically?**
No. It covers both sides of every topic it includes, and you can switch topics on and off yourself.
**Does it affect anyone else?**
No. It only changes what you see. Muted players aren't told, and nothing is reported to Blizzard. The one exception is if you turn on the option to add repeat offenders to your Blizzard ignore list.
**Does it send any data anywhere?**
Only if you turn on mute sharing, and then only to guildmates or group members running NoPolitics. There's no website and no account.
**My Blizzard ignore list is full. Does that matter?**
No. NoPolitics keeps its own mute list with no size limit.
## Compatibility
- WoW Forever
- Retail (Midnight)
No libraries needed. If a future patch breaks the settings window or the minimap button, the chat filter keeps working on its own, and every setting is still available through `/np` commands.

Found a word that catches normal chat, or political talk that slips through? Leave a comment with the message (or the word) and which channel it was in.
