This is the revised and updated version of MapRuler originally created here.
This will put a dotted line on the world map showing you exactly where your character is pointed. It can be handy when flying from one place to another. Simply put the line on where you want to go and turn on autorun.
The dotted line is only visible in outdoor zones, cities, and continent level maps.
The recent patch brought a ton of UI changes, and it's taking me much longer than normal to update this addon.
I will get it working though, so please be patient.

Had you had a chance to test on the 8.1 beta?

I finally had the time to get to this little addon.
Now you can change the color, size and opacity of the dots on the line. As a bonus if you like the way it looks without these changes, the default is still size 3 black dots with 50% opacity. There's even a button to change back to the defaults.
To play with the settings go to the system menu then Interface->AddOns->Map Ruler.
There might be a small delay in the changes seen on the map based on if your character is moving or not.
One goal is to make this addon eat up as little cpu time as I can. That's why dot spacing has not been implemented yet. When I'm happy with the efficiency of the code that lets you change dot spacing that will be implemented as well.

p.s. I know it was back in April, but yeah this addon will always work (maybe in a bare bones fashion with the latest WoW version as long as I am playing the game.)
Will this be updated for 7.2, or does it work with 7.2 right now even though it hasn't been updated? I have so many addons that I don't really want to install it if it won't work, as I know I'll never remember to remove the damn thing.
Small bug fix to make the line vanish when it's not supposed to be there.
Been out of town for a few days, and missed the new patch.
Blizz is not letting addons see anything about players location in instances. This includes player facing which is used by this addon to determine the direction of the line on the map. So, for now no Map Ruler in instances. On the plus side, the errors have been fixed.
Error on opening in EN Raid.

Thanks Merxz. Got it fixed now.
Small bug fix. Most people probably didn't notice it, but sometimes the line would show up in places it shouldn't for a short time. This is in ver 1.0.3 of this addon.
I am loving this addon for invasions. Thank you!
Glad you like it.

I second this
It has more lines of code, but does it otherwise differ much from MapLine?
From a player standpoint they both do pretty much the same thing.
I noticed that MapLine puts a line on world level maps, like when you're zoomed way out to see multiple continents. It may show up in other places I haven't checked.
Internally, we go about it two different ways. I really like what they have done. They use built in blizz API functions where I kinda do it from scratch. I was going to use pretty much the same approach they did, then decided to stick with the original authors method. I did this half to make it more of an "update", and half to be able to implement other features in the future. Like adding a config screen to change stuff like the line color, dot spacing, and line opacity. All this without eating more system resources during play.

Man I just logged onto the actualy Curse.com for the first time in some like 10ish years... JUST to thank you. It might seem a little weird... but MapRuler was one of my all time favorite mods. It's extremely simple however it is extremely useful and convenient for long distance traveling and especially multi-tasking. It's even more useful than normal because i multi-box two accounts and i can more accurately set one on auto flight. Like I said it might seem weird that I like it so much... but it is one of my alltime favorite mods.
That being said... I'm sure you can imagine how much I thought it sucked when 7.0 broke it. As weird as that is in the first place because MapRuler has lasted for years and several expansion packs and patches without ever needing updating. Anyway, Having searched before for a different mod, I just randomly decided to look again today and saw this. So anyway... not that I know if you will even read this... Thanks mate for remaking it/updating it.

Thanks for the kind words!
Glad I got it up here on Curse in time for you to use it.
I got it working, because just like you, I missed this addon so much when 7.0 broke it.

Here I am again, a few years later, having not had this mod for all of BFA (Don't worry I'm not playing BFA anyway) to ask you if you plan on getting this back up an running/is this mod usable for Classic? Classic is actually where I want it currently and that would be awesome!
Cheers!
