What's new

Knowledge Check 1.1.3

Players without the addon can now take the check.

That was the one real gap in 1.0.0. If somebody did not have Knowledge Check installed, the roster marked them as missing and the check went on without them. It ruled out the pug, the trial and the friend who joined ten minutes ago, which is most of the list of people a leader actually wants to quiz.

They get asked in group chat now, and they land in the same roster and the same summary as everyone else.

If you are coming from 1.0.0, this covers everything since.

If you do not have the addon

Five seconds after the leader starts a check, anyone whose addon has not answered gets the questions posted in group chat instead. One post, about ten lines, once:

Knowledge Check — Nek'zali (Heroic / Easy): No addon? Answer these 4.
Whisper me the letters in one message, e.g. /w Leader-Realm abca
Q1. Besides Nek'zali casting it, what triggers a Soulcoil Rite?
a) Killing a Latent Cultist b) An add reaching the well c) … d) …
Q2. …

Whisper the leader your answers in one message. abca works. So do a b c a, a,b,c,a, ABCA and 1a 2b 3c 4d. Do not answer in group chat, or you hand everybody else the answers.

You get one whisper back with your score and the questions you missed, and you show up on the leader's roster as passed or failed like anyone with the addon. Send something it cannot read and it whispers the format back to you once. Anything that does not look like an attempt at an answer is ignored completely.

This also covers players who have the addon but an old version of it, and players who installed it mid-raid and have not reloaded.

If you are the leader

Nothing is posted when every addon answers. A group where all of you have it installed sees no extra chat at all.

One post covers everybody who needs it. Ten players without the addon cost the same ten lines as one.

On the roster, a player answering in chat gets a yellow dot and their own line in the detail pane. Somebody who was asked and never replied reads as "Asked in chat, no answer", which is a different thing from "Addon not detected", and the posted summary keeps the two apart as well. /kc status tells you how many people are still typing.

There is a new setting under Leader: Ask players without the addon in chat, on by default. Switch it off and the addon behaves exactly as 1.0.0 did.

Everyone answering in chat gets the same questions

Players with the addon each get their own paper drawn for their own character. The chat questions are one shared set, so people answering that way can read each other's.

That is a deliberate trade. One post the whole group shares costs ten lines, while whispering everybody a private paper would cost ten lines each, and Blizzard throttles whispers harder than anything else. This is a tool for getting a pull organised, not an exam.

The chat set is also drawn from the questions that apply to every role, because one paper has to suit a tank, a healer and a dps at the same time. Four questions, same pass mark.

Update the whole group

The addon's internal messaging changed version. A 1.0.0 client and a 1.1.1 leader no longer understand each other, so anyone still on 1.0.0 will not get the popup.

They will get the chat questions instead, which is the point of this release, but they are answering the shared set rather than one written for their role. Get everyone onto 1.1.1.

Fixed: LFR, LFG and queued Mythic+ groups

Checks did not work in those groups at all. The addon was talking on the raid and party channels, and neither one is delivered in a group the game formed for you, so the start message and the summary both went nowhere.

Those groups use the instance channel now. Worth its own heading because it is also the exact group where people are most likely to be missing the addon.

Smaller things

  • Chat posts go out one line at a time and re-check the encounter state before every line, so a pull starting mid-post drops the rest instead of talking through the fight. Nothing is sent during a boss fight or a Mythic+ run, same as before.
  • The roster can now tell an outdated addon apart from no addon, and says update rather than install. Honest limit: this only works against versions from 1.1.1 onwards. Anyone on 1.0.0 today is simply silent, and the chat questions are what catches them. It starts paying off at the next version change.
  • /kc sim runs a nine person fake group including the whole chat track, so you can watch it solo before taking it to a raid.

Unchanged

The same 832 questions across the eight Venomous Abyss encounters, both modes, all the same commands and settings. If a question looks wrong, say so and it gets fixed in the next release.
