Description

KMDA Trivia: Synchronized multiple-choice trivia for your guild, your friends, and your whole raid group

Made by Kiss My Darnassus, for the community and our shared love of the game.

Release 1.1.0h | 141 questions | 13 topics | Open source (MIT)

What is it?

KMDA Trivia turns any group into a game show. One person hosts, everybody else gets the question on their screen at the same moment, and the faster you answer correctly, the more points you earn. Timers, live standings, a response list, and chat announcements for the answer and the scoreboard are all built in.

It started as a way to run quick, friendly trivia nights in our guild, Kiss My Darnassus, and grew into something we wanted to share with everyone. Whether you run a guild event, a community night, or a quiet evening with a couple of friends, it is made to be easy to set up and fun to play.

Highlights

  • Multiplayer for any group. Party, raid, or instance group. Only the group leader or an assistant can host.
  • Solo play. No group needed. You can host for yourself to practice, learn the panels, and test your own custom questions before a real event.
  • Fast-answer scoring. 10 points for an instant correct answer, minus 1 point per full second, never below 1.
  • Host timers. 10, 15, 20, 30, 45 or 60 seconds, or no timer at all. Optionally end a question as soon as everyone has answered.
  • Live host panel. Question card, answer distribution bars, responses, standings, pause, previous/next, and one-click announcements of the answer and scores to chat.
  • Player panel. Four big answer buttons, a countdown bar, instant right/wrong feedback, and your running score.
  • Topic icons. Each topic has its own small crest that fades in on the question card.
  • Custom topics. Paste your own questions, validate them, and use them right away (see below).
  • KMDA look. Royal blue and gold, straight from the guild certificate.

Getting started

  1. Install the addon and log in. Everyone in the group should run the same version.
  2. Type /kt to open the player window.
  3. To host, type /kt lead (you need to be the group leader or an assistant, or playing solo).
  4. Pick a topic and a timer, then press Send Question.
  5. Players tap an answer. Press Announce Answer and Announce Scores whenever you like.

Practice solo, and test your own questions

You do not need a group to use KMDA Trivia. Host a game for yourself to try everything out, rehearse an event, or check that a new question set reads well and fits the message limits.

Custom topics: open Topics on the config panel (or type /kt topics), paste a topic table, press Validate, then Import. Your topic shows up in the dropdown immediately and is saved between sessions. You can remove any custom topic later with its Remove button, so the list never gets cluttered.

  • The pasted text is only ever read as data, never run as code, so a table from another guild cannot do anything unexpected.
  • Validation checks every question (all four choices, a valid correct letter, no duplicate answers, and that it fits the network message limit) and tells you exactly which one needs fixing.
  • Guilds can share their own question sets as plain text.
A minimal custom topic looks like this:
{
    ["My Guild Lore"] = {
        icon = "XX", -- optional 2-character icon token
        {
            q = "What is our guild's name?",
            a = "Kiss My Darnassus", b = "Kiss My Orgrimmar",
            c = "Kiss My Stormwind", d = "Kiss My Thunder Bluff",
            correct = "A"
        },
    },
}

How multiplayer works

A short, plain-language look under the hood, for the curious and for fellow developers.

  • Addon messages, not chat spam. Everything travels as hidden addon messages on the prefix kmdatrivia. Nobody sees codes in their chat window.
  • The host broadcasts, players whisper back. The host sends each question to the group (instance, raid or party channel). Answers are whispered only to the host, so other players cannot see them and the host never has to read the group channel.
  • Small, validated messages. A question is sent as one compact message, kept under the 255-byte limit. Every built-in question is checked against that limit on load, and every imported question is checked before it is saved.
  • Handlers per message type. The addon routes each incoming message to a small handler: START_Q (new question), PAUSE / RESUME, END_Q (reveal the answer), SB (scoreboard pages), RESET, ANSWER, and SYNC_REQ.
  • Only the host is trusted. Clients ignore question, pause, end and scoreboard messages from anyone who is not the group leader or an assistant.
  • Built to survive throttling. Outgoing messages wait in a queue and go out through a token bucket, so bursts are paced instead of silently dropped by Blizzard's throttle.
  • Fair timing. The host keeps the clock and sends the elapsed time with each question, so a late joiner or a /reload does not break the countdown.
  • Recovery. After a /reload or when you join the group mid-question, the addon asks the host for the live question (SYNC_REQ) and catches up.
  • Safe imports. Pasted topic tables go through a small data-only parser, never through Lua's code loader.

Please read: when to use it

KMDA Trivia is not meant to be used during raid encounters. In current WoW versions, Blizzard blocks addon messages during boss encounters, Mythic+ runs and rated PvP, so the game cannot sync while those are active. It is, however, best enjoyed with a raid group: before the pull, after a clear, during a guild event, or in your housing town with a group of friends. Up to a full raid can play along at once.

Open source, and credits

KMDA Trivia is open source under the MIT License. The author encourages other developers to use it, learn from it, change it, and optimize it however they like. The network queue, the message handlers and the safe topic importer are there to be reused.

This addon was built with help from Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini, and OpenAI's ChatGPT, along with a great deal of testing, feedback and encouragement from the guild. Thank you to all of them.

Thank you

Thank you to everyone who tries KMDA Trivia. This was a fun project and I look forward to hearing from the users, feedback is very welcome: anything that needs fixing, ideas for features, bugs encountered, and of course stories from your trivia nights where you crushed the compitition with your massive brain ;). Leave a comment on this page if any issues arise. **EVERYONE MUST BE USING THE SAME VERSION** UPDATE TO v1.1.0h.

No donations are needed or wanted. If you would like to say thanks, please give to your local food bank (or a food charity of your choice) instead. It will do far more good.

Kiss My Darnassus - See you in Azeroth, and may the fastest finger win.
