howudoin

plays a nice little howudoin when you crit.

howudoin

Every crit deserves a little "howudoin."

howudoin plays a random voice clip whenever you land a critical hit. Spell damage, heals and weapon swings all count. Land a crit that finishes off your target and you get a special finisher sound instead. All the clips were recorded by the author and friends in voice chat.

Features

  • 14 random clips for crits, so it doesn't get repetitive
  • Finisher sound for crits that finish the target
  • Best-crit filter: only play for crits close to your personal best with that spell, so the sound means something
  • Crit records: see your highest crits for individual spells, ranks, healing and weapon swings with /howudoin records
  • Weapon crit toggle: keep the sound for spells and abilities, and skip auto-attacks if you like
  • Solo swing detection: on WoW: Forever, optionally limit auto-attack crit attribution to yourself while solo
  • Throttle: an optional 2-second cooldown, handy for melee classes and AoE
  • Configurable tolerance: choose how close a crit must be to your record; 0 means ties or new records only
  • Settings window: configure the addon through /howudoin or the AddOns options menu
  • Debug tools: inspect detection output and, on WoW: Forever, review the recent casts the addon is tracking
  • Per-character settings and records, saved automatically

Supported versions

  • Classic Era — uses combat-log events for crit detection and source attribution
  • WoW: Forever (beta) — uses unit-combat events and recent-cast tracking because the combat log isn't available to addons in the same way

Commands

Type /howudoin to open the settings window. You can also find it under Options > AddOns > howudoin.

Command What it does Default
/howudoin swing Sound on weapon (white) crits On
/howudoin swingsolo On Forever, only attribute auto-attack crits to you while solo On
/howudoin overkill Finisher sound on crits that finish the target On
/howudoin throttle Minimum 2 seconds between sounds Off
/howudoin best Only play for crits close to your best Off
/howudoin tolerance <0-100> How close to your best counts, in percent (0 = ties or new records only) 5
/howudoin records Show your ten highest recorded crits
/howudoin reset Clear your crit records
/howudoin debug Toggle troubleshooting output Off
/howudoin buffer Show recent casts tracked on Forever
/howudoin help Print the command list and play a sample sound

The best-crit filter

Turn it on with /howudoin best. Each spell keeps its own record, and a crit only plays if it lands within your tolerance of that record (5% by default). A new record always plays. For example, with a Fireball record of 1000, a 960 crit plays and a 940 crit stays quiet. Your Frostbolt crits are judged against your best Frostbolt, not your best Fireball.

Set the tolerance with /howudoin tolerance 15 to allow crits within 15% of your record. Set it to 0 to play only when you tie or beat your best. Records continue updating even while the filter is off.

Notes for WoW: Forever

Forever doesn't give addons the same combat-log information as Classic Era, so howudoin uses unit-combat events and a short buffer of your recent casts to infer which crits belong to you. It attempts to match crits to your casts and rejects ambiguous spell matches rather than simply guessing.

This works best solo, but there are some limitations:

  • In a group, another player's crit on your target can still trigger the sound because the event doesn't identify its source.
  • Area spells are limited by the information available for your current target; crits on other targets may not be detected.
  • Pets, totems and damage-over-time effects may not be attributed reliably.
  • If the game hides relevant combat values, some crits cannot be identified or measured.
  • Finisher detection checks whether the target dies shortly after the crit. This is an approximation, unlike Classic Era's use of combat-log overkill information.

For troubleshooting, run /howudoin debug and land a few crits. Use /howudoin buffer to inspect recent casts if a crit seems to be attributed to the wrong spell or isn't detected.

Forever support is based on the beta and will be tuned as the game changes. Some limitations come from the information the game exposes to addons, rather than from howudoin itself.

Installation

Install through the CurseForge app, or unzip the howudoin folder into your Interface/AddOns folder and restart the game.

Feedback and bug reports

Found a bug, or want a feature? Leave a comment on this page. For detection problems on Forever, run /howudoin debug, land a few crits, and include what it prints. If relevant, include the output of /howudoin buffer too.
