Open action-bar macros with a hover shortcut and change arena1/2/3 targets using editor buttons or configurable keybinds.
Full description — paste the text below into your project description:
HoverMacro makes editing your saved macros faster, especially when an arena target changes between matches or Solo Shuffle rounds. Open the exact macro on your action bar with a hover shortcut, then switch its target using Arena 1, Arena 2, or Arena 3 buttons beside Blizzard's macro editor.
Keep one saved macro, its action-bar placement, and its existing gameplay keybind. Change the arena target whenever you need to, outside combat.
Get started: Type /macro, select an existing macro containing a simple arena target, and click Arena 1, Arena 2, or Arena 3 beside the editor. The current target is highlighted. Clicking a button changes and saves the selected macro immediately, including any text you have edited. You do not need additional utility macros or target-changing keybinds to use the buttons.
Type /hm to open HoverMacro's settings and configure optional shortcuts.
Choose the workflow that fits your setup.
- Open a macro from your action bar. Hover over a saved macro and press your configured Open Editor shortcut. HoverMacro selects that macro in Blizzard's editor, including the correct account or character tab.
- Switch macros without closing the editor. Hover another action-bar macro and press the same shortcut again. Your current draft is saved and the next macro opens in the same window, including while the macro text box has focus.
- Change targets beside the editor. Click Arena 1, 2, or 3. These buttons always affect the macro selected in the editor and update as you select another macro.
- Keep editing after moving your pointer away. Configured target shortcuts and the quick selector can use the currently open macro when no saved macro is hovered. This option is enabled by default.
- Make a quick change without opening the editor. Hover a macro and use a direct Arena 1/2/3 shortcut, or open the small target selector and choose a number.
- Undo the last target change. Use
/hm undo, the selector's Undo button, or the settings panel. Undo reverses the last successful HoverMacro target change while retaining text you typed before that change.
For shortcuts, a hovered macro takes priority over the open editor. The buttons beside the editor always use the editor's selected macro.
Examples of when HoverMacro helps:
-
The enemy healer has a different arena number. Your Paralysis macro uses
@arena1, but you identify the healer as arena3 in the next match or round. Before combat, open that macro and click Arena 3. Its name, icon, action-bar placement, and gameplay keybind stay the same. Every action-bar copy of that saved macro uses the updated target. -
You are moving from FrameSort healer macros to manual arena targets. Open the macro, remove its
#FrameSortor#FSdirective, and replace any FrameSort target placeholder with a normal selector such as@arena1. Once the macro has a supported arena selector, use HoverMacro's buttons or shortcuts for future changes. FrameSort can continue managing your other macros. -
You have several macros to review before queuing. Hover the first macro and open it with your shortcut. Make your edits, hover the next macro, and press the shortcut again. You can work through them without repeatedly closing the editor or searching through the macro list.
-
You only need one quick target adjustment. Hover the macro and press your configured Arena 2 shortcut. With direct confirmation disabled, it changes immediately and optional chat feedback confirms which macro changed. You can leave the full editor closed.
For example, choosing Arena 3 changes:
/cast [@arena1] Paralysis
to:
/cast [@arena3] Paralysis
Shortcuts are optional and configurable. In /hm, assign keys for opening the hovered macro, opening the quick selector, and setting Arena 1, 2, or 3 directly. Ctrl, Alt, and Shift combinations are supported, along with mouse-wheel, middle-button, and mouse-button 4/5 bindings through the capture interface.
Click Use suggested shortcuts to assign Ctrl+Alt+E for the editor and Ctrl+Alt+Q for the quick selector, where those keys are available. These are not assigned automatically. Direct Arena 1/2/3 shortcuts start unbound, and an occupied shortcut requires explicit confirmation before reassignment.
While typing in the editor, use Ctrl/Alt combinations or function keys for target shortcuts. Ordinary text keys remain available for typing when using the open-editor fallback.

The /hm 1, /hm 2, and /hm 3 commands respect the direct-shortcut confirmation setting. You can put commands in utility macros if you prefer; native HoverMacro keybindings support switching macros while the editor text box has focus. /macro is Blizzard's command for opening its macro editor.
Customize the interface in /hm. Show or hide the editor buttons; place the quick selector near your cursor or at screen center; focus macro text when opening it; highlight the arena digit; toggle confirmation messages in chat; require confirmation for direct target shortcuts; and enable or disable the open-editor fallback. Options and the last Undo record are saved per character. Shortcut assignments use your active WoW binding profile.
Supported target changes include [@arena1], [target=arena2], and simple commands such as /target arena3, /focus arena1, or /assist arena2. Repeated references to the same arena number change together. Other conditions and surrounding macro text are preserved.
Know what to expect. You choose the enemy healer's arena number manually. HoverMacro does not read enemy specializations, identify healers, sort enemy frames, or automatically change targets between rounds. Editing is available outside combat only; changes are never queued for after combat.
Macros containing multiple different arena targets, unsupported arena expressions, or FrameSort directives require manual editing. The editor buttons explain blocked changes through their tooltips. Give action-bar macros unique names so they can be identified reliably. If you are changing a different hovered macro while another macro has an unsaved draft in the editor, save or cancel that draft first. Undo will not overwrite a macro that has subsequently changed.
Designed for WoW Retail 12.1.5, using Blizzard's macro editor and saved macros. Adapters for Dominos and LibActionButton-based bars, including Bartender and ElvUI, are included; those combinations still need in-game verification. Addons that replace the macro editor or store their own inline macro text may need separate support. No additional libraries or external programs are required.
When reporting an issue, include your WoW version, action-bar addon, relevant macro text, and any error message.
