GearDuck is a lightweight World of Warcraft: Forever addon that takes the guesswork out of gearing. It calculates an item's "Power Level" from editable stat weights and compares it with what you have equipped, helping you spot an Upgrade, Sidegrade, or Downgrade at a glance.
Built for WoW: Forever Beta 1.60.1 (Interface: 16001), GearDuck uses the modern tooltip API to keep your game running smoothly.
✨ Core Features
- At-a-Glance Upgrades: Shows a small up-arrow on item icons in your bags, quest rewards, mail, and vendors when an item is an upgrade. Integrates with default Blizzard bags and Baganator.
- Smart Class, Tree, and Activity Weights: Detects your class and active talent tree, then uses editable starter weights for that combination in Questing, Raid, and PvP profiles. Each activity can have its own weights and hit caps.
- Useful Out of the Box: Starter weights cover the nine original Classic classes and their major talent trees. They are broad level-60 Classic-style estimates—not simulation results—and are meant as a sensible starting point. Gear, role, encounter, talents, and playstyle can change what is best, so you can customize any profile.
- Comprehensive Comparisons: Rings, trinkets, and one-handed weapons show separate comparisons for each slot. Two-handed weapons compare against both equipped weapon slots together.
- Smart Eligibility: Checks weapon and armor eligibility using explicit Classic rules, including level-20 polearm training, level-40 armor unlocks, and the Shaman two-handed weapon talent. Unusable items display
Cannot Use. - Deep Calculations: Factors in supported racial weapon skills, weapon-specific talent effects, weapon DPS and speed, and separate comparisons for weapons with and without their enchants.
⚙️ Configuration & Tuning
GearDuck is ready out of the box and fully customizable. Use /gd options or navigate to Options → AddOns → GearDuck to tune it.
- Custom Weights: Edit Strength, Agility, Stamina, Intellect, Spirit, Hit, Crit, Attack Power, Spell Power, Weapon DPS, Weapon Speed Preference, and more. Positive speed weights favor slower weapons; negative weights favor faster weapons.
- Activity Profiles: Choose any combination of Questing, Raid, and PvP comparisons. Each uses its own class and talent-tree starter weights.
- Hit Caps: Configure separate physical and spell hit caps for each activity. GearDuck subtracts recognized talent hit bonuses and accounts for dual-wielding caps.
- Restore Defaults: Restore the recommended weights for the selected class, activity, and detected talent tree. Saved custom weights are not overwritten just because the addon updates.
The starter weights are heuristics rather than exact rankings. For example, a talent tree alone cannot distinguish every role or gearing strategy, and stat values can change with your gear and content. Treat the defaults as a helpful baseline, not a replacement for a simulation.
🛠️ Advanced: Manual Effects & Set Bonuses
Tooltip text cannot always provide a reliable average value for unique procs or use effects, so GearDuck lets you assign manual values:
- Item Procs: Hover an item and type
/gd itembonus 12to add 12 Power Level to its score. Clear it with/gd itembonus clear. - Enchant Procs: Hover an enchanted weapon and type
/gd enchantbonus 12to value the proc. - Set Bonuses: Hover a set item, use
/gd debugto find its set ID, and assign a threshold value (for example,/gd setbonus 2 15applies 15 Power Level when you have two pieces equipped).
💬 Chat Commands
Use /gd or /gearduck followed by:
help: Show the command list.options: Open the settings panel.debug: Print the hovered item's raw stats, weighted math, and slot comparisons to chat.profile raid|quest|pvp: Select the activity context used for tooltip comparisons.hitcap <value>orhitcap physical|spell <value>: Set the current activity's hit cap in percent (for example,/gd hitcap 9).itembonus <value|clear>: Set or clear a manual Power Level value for the currently hovered item.enchantbonus <value|clear>: Set or clear a proc-only Power Level value for the hovered weapon enchant.setbonus <pieces> <value|clear>: Set or clear a manual value for a hovered item's set at a piece-count threshold.
