What's new

Forever Player Notes 0.1.0 Beta 3

The whole V1, in one beta. Beta 3 adds the four features the plan had spread over Betas 3 to 6: the note in the unit tooltip, an "Add note..." / "Edit note..." entry in the unit right-click menus, a notes window with a search box and an editor, and an options panel. The renumbering announced in Beta 2 no longer applies; this is the last planned beta before 0.1.0.

As before, nothing in this addon has run in a WoW Forever client: it is proven against Blizzard's published UI source (40 API checks) and under a headless interpreter (96 assertions), never in the game. /pnotes probe is still the most useful thing a tester can run — see the last section.

New

  • Tooltip. Hovering a player with a note shows a blank line and Note: ... in light blue under Blizzard's lines, wrapped, cut at tooltipMaxLength characters (80 by default, 0 = full note). Only on GameTooltip and ItemRefTooltip.
  • Right-click menu. Every unit menu (world players, enemies, target, focus, party and raid members, friends list, chat names, guild and channel rosters) gets a divider, "Player Notes" and "Add note..." or "Edit note...", which opens the editor on that player. Three toggles decide where it shows: party/raid members, the friends list, chat and rosters.
  • Notes window (/pnotes list): notes sorted by key, a search box that filters on key and text as you type, 14 recycled rows with a text preview, "N notes", New note, Close. Click a row to edit. Movable, ESC closes it.
  • Editor: player field (locked when opened from a menu or a row), a 1000-character text box with a live n/1000 counter, Save, Delete with a Yes/No confirmation, Cancel. Enter in the player field jumps to the text; ESC cancels. Saving an empty text deletes the note.
  • Options (ESC → Options → AddOns → Forever Player Notes, or /pnotes options): tooltip on/off and its length slider, menu on/off and its three source toggles, the notes window on/off, "Open the notes window", debug messages. A feature the client cannot run is greyed, not hidden.
  • /pnotes options, /pnotes length [<n>] (0 = full note). options and length join the reserved words.

Behaviour worth knowing

  • A feature that throws inside a Blizzard callback goes inert for the session (one warning, /pnotes status shows failed=true) instead of breaking the tooltip or the menu for every addon; re-enabling it in the options retries.
  • Notes are shown with | escaped, so a pasted colour code stays text.
  • Under regionally unique names a first-name-only note is saved but warned about, in the slash command and in the editor alike.

Still unverified — please report

Never run in a Forever client. Run /pnotes probe, /reload, and post the lastProbe block; then, if you can, walk docs/MANUAL_TEST_CHECKLIST.md sections 4 to 8 (tooltip, menu, window, editor, options) and say which rows differ from the expected column. The open questions are unchanged:

  • whether uniqueNames is true on your realm and key for player reads First-Surname;
  • whether other players' names are secret values to addons (then the tooltip and menu add nothing, by design);
  • whether the client is detected as FOREVER, and whether the tooltip post-call and the MENU_UNIT_* tags fire there at all.

Forever Player Notes 0.1.0 Beta 2

Still the foundation, with the identity fixed. Beta 2 has the same one entry point as Beta 1, the /pnotes slash command; the tooltip line, the right-click menu entry, the notes window and the options panel are the next four milestones. It replaces Beta 1 because Beta 1 could key a note under the wrong name on a regionally-unique-names realm. Nothing in this addon has run in a Forever client yet, only against Blizzard's published UI source and a headless interpreter, so /pnotes probe is still the most useful thing a tester can run.

Fixed since Beta 1

  • On a realm with regionally unique names, a targeted player's note is now keyed First-Surname, read the way Blizzard's own unit menu reads it (UnitNameUnmodified). Beta 1 could store it as First-<realm> and never find it again. /pnotes probe shows the result as key for player.
  • /pnotes del <name> extra words deletes <name> instead of looking up a glued-together key and reporting "no note".
  • /pnotes <first name> <text> on a unique-names realm still saves the note, and now says that a note on a first name alone will not show on the unit.

What works

  • /pnotes <name> <text> saves a note on a player; /pnotes <name> shows it; /pnotes alone shows the note on your current target.
  • /pnotes del <name> deletes a note (delete is an alias; del alone prints the usage). /playernotes is a second name for the whole command.
  • /pnotes status, /pnotes debug, /pnotes reset (reloads the UI).
  • Notes are stored account-wide under Name-Realm, so a note taken on one character is seen from every character. Lookups ignore case (ASCII letters). Under regionally unique names the key is First-Surname and no realm is appended.
  • A note is at most 1000 characters (characters, not bytes); a longer one is refused, never cut. An empty text deletes the note.
  • A hand-edited or damaged FPN_DB is repaired at load: unusable entries and wrong-typed settings are reset with a warning, never an error.
  • /pnotes probe prints what the client actually exposes — capability flags, your realm, the regionally-unique-names mode, whether unit names are secret values, the raw returns of UnitFullName and UnitNameUnmodified, the key resolved for you and your target — and saves the block to FPN_DB.lastProbe so you can /reload and paste it from WTF\Account\<ACCOUNT>\SavedVariables\ForeverPlayerNotes.lua.

Still unverified — please report

Never run in a Forever client. If you install this beta, run /pnotes probe, /reload, and post the lastProbe block. It settles three open questions:

  • whether uniqueNames is true on your realm, and whether key for player reads First-Surname there — if it does not, the two raw UnitFullName / UnitNameUnmodified lines say why;
  • whether other players' names are secret values to addons;
  • whether the client is detected as FOREVER at all.

Coming next

Beta 3: the tooltip line. Beta 4: the right-click menu entry. Beta 5: the notes window and editor. Beta 6: the options panel. Sharing, ratings, tags and encounter history are not planned for 0.1.

Forever Player Notes 0.1.0 Beta 1

Foundation release. This beta has one entry point, the /pnotes slash command. The tooltip line, the right-click menu entry, the notes window and the options panel are not in it yet — they are the next four milestones. It exists so that people with a WoW Forever client can run /pnotes probe and tell us what the client really exposes: nothing in this addon has ever run in a Forever client, only against Blizzard's published UI source and a headless interpreter.

Still unverified — please report

Never run in a Forever client. If you install this beta, the most useful thing you can do is run /pnotes probe, /reload, and post the lastProbe block. It settles three open questions:

  • what UnitFullName returns under regionally unique names (the key format depends on it — if key for player shows Name-<your realm> while the probe says uniqueNames = true, that is the known gap, not a new bug);
  • whether other players' names are secret values to addons;
  • whether the client is detected as FOREVER at all.
