Critical Numbers

A reimagining of Classic Numbers, this simple addon plays a sound when you crit to give you pleasurable audio feedback during you big damage moments.

Hear the size of your hit.

Critical Numbers is a lightweight combat-feedback addon that plays a sound every time you land a damage critical hit — and lets the sound itself scale with how big the crit was. Set a minimum crit size for each sound, and the addon automatically escalates: your everyday "Crit" plays on normal hits, while a punchier "Big Crit" only kicks in once you clear threshold you choose.

Features

  • Per-sound damage thresholds — every sound gets its own "Min crit" value. A 50k crit and a 500k crit can sound completely different.
  • Automatic tier escalation — when a crit clears more than one threshold, the highest tier wins. No mode to configure; it just works.
  • Silence below your floor — set a sound's threshold high enough and small crits simply make no noise at all, instead of spamming you on trash damage.
  • Smart crit attribution — Retail restricts what addons can see in the combat log, so Critical Numbers uses a tiered best-effort detector (recent cast match → damage-over-time tick → rate-limited auto-attack) to filter out other players' crits instead of just reacting to any damage number that appears.
  • Pet crit support — optionally count your pet's crits as your own.
  • Context filters — turn detection on or off per situation: PvP, Arena, Raid, Dungeon, Open World.
  • One-click Quick Toggle — right-click the minimap icon to instantly mute everything without touching your saved configuration.
  • Diagnostics built in — /cnattr shows exactly why a crit was or wasn't attributed to you, so tuning thresholds and filters isn't guesswork.

How it works

Left-click the minimap icon to open the Sound Effects window. Check the sounds you want active, give each one a minimum crit size, and you're done. When a crit lands, Critical Numbers finds every sound whose threshold it clears and plays the one with the highest threshold — if two sounds share the same threshold, it picks between them at random so it doesn't feel robotic.

Honesty about detection

Because Retail doesn't expose full combat-log data to addons for every situation, this addon does it's best to determine which crits are yours by looking at cast timings. Everything is filtered aggressively so you're hearing your crits, not the raid's, but again, it is not perfect and cannot be without looking at a combat log. This is the new reality we live in with no combat log monitoring, and it's not perfect, but hopefully the audio feedback of doing big damage brings the seratonin to your brain like it does for me.
