CapCheck
See where you stand on hit and crit without opening a spreadsheet.
CapCheck adds a compact panel next to Character → Skills. It reads your gear, talents, buffs, race and weapon skill, and shows live:
- your full attack table against a raid boss
- your hit, crit and defense caps, and how far you are from each
- a numbered "what to gear next" list that updates as your gear changes
Hidden by default: one click on the arrow at the edge of the Skills tab opens it.
Features
Works for every class and spec CapCheck detects your spec from your talent points and switches to the right caps automatically:
| Mode | Classes / specs | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Melee | Rogue, Arms/Fury Warrior, Ret Paladin, Enhancement Shaman, Cat Druid | Special + auto-attack hit caps, white crit cap, full attack table |
| Ranged | Hunter | Ranged hit cap, Agility/crit priority |
| Caster | Mage, Warlock, Shadow Priest, Elemental Shaman, Balance Druid | Spell hit cap (16% vs. bosses) |
| Tank | Prot Warrior, Prot Paladin, Bear Druid | 440 defense for crit immunity, hit cap for threat |
| Healer | Holy/Disc Priest, Holy Paladin, Resto Shaman/Druid | Typical stat priority |
Druids switch automatically between bear (tank) and cat (melee) when they shift forms.
Live attack table See how your swings actually resolve against a level 63 boss, in separate columns for specials, main-hand and off-hand auto attacks: miss, dodge, glancing, crit and normal hit.
Cap status at a glance
- Hit cap for specials: capped (+5.0%) or need +2.1%
- Hit cap for auto attacks, per hand, when dual wielding
- White crit cap: how much room you have left before crits get pushed off the table by glancing blows
What to gear next A numbered priority list based on your current situation, with a short explanation for each stat. It reacts to your gear. For example, crit drops to the bottom when you're over the crit cap, and 2H users get warned when extra hit is wasted.
Helpful notes
- Off-hand weapon skill lower than your main hand, and how much hit that costs you
- Weapon skill not maxed yet
- Weapon skill breakpoints (e.g. 305 removes the hit penalty vs. bosses)
- Heroic Strike queue effect on off-hand misses (dual-wield warriors)
Racials and talents included Weapon skill comes straight from the game, so Human swords/maces, Orc axes, Dwarf guns, Troll bows, Weapon Expertise and items like Edgemaster's Handguards are all counted.
Lightweight Only calculates while the panel is visible. No dependencies, no libraries.
Language Works on any client language: detection uses class tokens and talent positions, not localized names. The panel text is English.
How to use
- Open your character window (C) and go to the Skills tab.
- Click the arrow on the right edge of the window.
- Click it again to hide the panel. Your choice is remembered.

How the numbers are calculated
CapCheck uses the community-accepted Classic Era formulas and assumes you attack from behind (no parry or block):
- Miss vs. bosses: 8% at 300 weapon skill, 6% at 305, 5% at 315. At 300 skill the first 1% of hit from gear is ignored, which is why the special hit cap there is 9%.
- Dual wield: auto-attack miss = miss × 0.8 + 20%.
- Glancing blows: 40% of auto attacks against a level 63 boss.
- Crit suppression: about 1.8% against +3 level bosses, plus a small penalty for the weapon skill difference. This value is a community estimate, so treat the crit cap as accurate to a few tenths of a percent.
- Spell hit cap: 16% against level 63 bosses (spells can never go above 99% hit).
- Defense: 440 makes you immune to crits from level 63 bosses.
Known limitations
- School-specific hit talents (Suppression, Shadow Focus, Arcane Focus, Elemental Precision) only apply to one spell school, and the game may not include them in your spell hit value. Add them with
/capc spellhitadj. - Melee hit talents: if your hit chance looks lower than expected (e.g. Precision not counted), use
/capc hitadj. - Spec detection uses the tree with the most points. For hybrid builds, set the mode manually with
/capc mode. - The stat priorities are general guidelines, not a full simulation. For exact item comparisons, use a sim.
