What's new

Changelog

1.0.0-beta.7

  • New narrator. Every story recap for levels 1 to 30 is read by a new narrator, in one take instead of glued-together pieces.
  • More quest givers re-voiced in the new cast. Still on the way in the next voice updates: new voices for the troll women (Mai'ah and others), the gnome men (Felix Whindlebolt and others), the kobolds, the Fallen Hero, two goblins in Orgrimmar and a hero voice for male orc characters.
  • The X on the speaker window skips to the next line in the queue instead of stopping everything. Shift-click the X to stop it all.
  • The voice packs now connect to Chronicle through LibStub instead of a global function. Older voice packs keep working until they're updated.

1.0.0-beta.6

  • Code checked with wowlua-ls (the WoW Lua language server): no warnings left. Only current addon API, and party sync can't trip over protected values.

1.0.0-beta.5

  • Every recap, chapter intro and character bio was checked against the quest text: about 400 small corrections (wrong names, details from the wrong quest, spoilers). New recaps for the first new WoW: Forever quests in Northshire, Deathknell and the Valley of Trials.
  • Picking up quests from several NPCs in a row no longer cuts anyone off. Each one waits for the last to finish.
  • Stage directions in quest text (like "<snort>" or "<Angela points to her head.>") are no longer read aloud. In the subtitles they're greyed out, so you can tell them apart from what's said.
  • Every voice type now has its own switch. "Voice quest givers" (formerly "Play voiceover on quests") only turns off the quest givers, so you can keep just the narrator, or just greetings, or any mix. "Journal only" still turns everything off.
  • The options are sorted into sections (General, Voices, While talking, Journal and map, Sharing), and voice settings grey out while "Journal only" is on.
  • Clicking Options during combat no longer just closes the journal. The game doesn't allow its settings window in combat, so Chronicle opens it as soon as the fight is over.
  • A voice that was playing during a /reload no longer keeps talking over the next one.
  • Quest markers on the map no longer show other classes' training letters (like a mage's "Glyphic Parchment" for a warrior).
  • Quests that exist once per starting zone (like "The Adventurer" or "Camping 101") no longer show up in your journal for every starting zone. You only see the one you did.
  • Code cleanup: Chronicle now keeps its data inside the addon instead of in global variables, and uses the current addon API.

1.0.0-beta.4

  • Fixed a Lua error when opening the world map ("Blizzard_MapCanvas.lua:309: assertion failed"). Story and quest pins work as before; right-click on a pin now zooms the map out like everywhere else.
  • New option: Journal only (no voices). One checkbox turns off every voice and the voice pack reminders, so you can use just the journal. You don't need the voice packs for it. The missing-packs popup also has a "Journal only" button.
  • The journal has an Options button at the top, so you don't have to dig through the game menu.
  • Zones in the journal (both The Story and Characters) can be folded open and shut. Only your current zone starts open, and searching opens everything.
  • /lore share now points to the new Chronicle Discord: https://discord.gg/NKevry7mY

1.0.0-beta.3

  • The voice packs now install together with Chronicle in the CurseForge app. Before this, many of you got the addon without any voices. Sorry about that! If that happened to you, update Chronicle and the packs come along.
  • Chronicle now shows a popup if a voice pack is missing or turned off, telling you exactly what to install.

1.0.0-beta.2

  • The voice packs are linked to Chronicle on CurseForge.
  • Chronicle has its own book icon in the AddOns list.

1.0.0-beta.1 (first public beta)

First public release. Please report anything that sounds or looks wrong.

Voiceover

  • Voiced quest text for levels 1 to 30 on both factions: accept, progress and turn-in.
  • Each NPC keeps the same voice, chosen from their race, sex and role.
  • NPC greetings, with an adjustable cooldown (default 10 minutes).
  • Books, plaques and letters in the world are read aloud (player-written mail never is).
  • NPC world speech: says and yells.
  • Your character's reactions on quest turn-in.
  • Talking head frame with a 3D model, subtitles and a progress bar. It can be dragged.
  • Listen/Stop buttons on the quest window and the quest log.
  • Voice keeps playing while the game is in the background (optional).
  • The game's own short NPC greeting and farewell clips are muted, so they don't talk over the voices (optional).
  • Optional stand-in voice (your game's built-in text-to-speech) for lines that aren't voiced yet.

Journal

  • The story is told as zone chapters with summaries, progress bars and search.
  • Characters tab with bios and "given by" links.
  • Recap after turn-in, plus a whole zone's story as an audiobook.
  • "Previously in <zone>" reminder and dungeon introductions.
  • World map pins for the chapters you've started.
  • Optional quest markers on the map (off by default): "!" at quest givers with quests for you, "?" where to hand in finished quests. They switch off while Questie runs.
  • "New in WoW: Forever" marker.
  • Minimap button.

Community

  • Party sync: new quest recordings are shared with group members who run Chronicle. The data is only read and never run as code.
  • /lore share exports your recordings of new content so the next update can voice them.
  • /lore report <note> flags a mispronounced name or a wrong line.
  • /lore share also includes your /lore report notes. /chronicle works as well as /lore.
  • A short welcome the first time you log in. Chronicle also tells you once if a zone's voice pack is missing or turned off.
