Character Notes 2.2.8 — Major Update
Character Notes has grown far beyond the original Guild Chat Notes 1.3.0. It now provides a private note database for players, guild members, NPCs, and map locations throughout World of Warcraft.
Addon identity and interface
-
Renamed Guild Chat Notes to Character Notes to reflect its expanded scope.
-
Rebuilt the main window with a searchable, paginated list of every saved character, NPC, and map note.
-
Added All, Guild, Non-guild, and NPC list filters.
-
Search now checks names, note text, and saved locations.
-
Added sorting by name, note, map, and date in ascending or descending order.
-
Realm suffixes remain stored for accurate matching but are hidden from the list.
-
Added full-row hover highlighting and detailed entry tooltips.
-
Added a right-click menu with Edit, Show/Hide Note, Show on Map, Share, Remove Note, and Close.
-
Replaced row action labels with dedicated edit, visibility, map, share, and remove icons.
-
Added a draggable minimap launcher with:
-
Left-click to open or close Character Notes.
-
Right-click for Add Note, Export, and Import.
Notes throughout chat and tooltips
-
Expanded note display beyond guild chat to:
-
Guild
-
Raid
-
Party
-
Numbered channels
-
Incoming and outgoing whispers
-
Each chat type can be enabled independently.
-
Added private notes to player unit tooltips.
-
Added a master Show notes switch.
-
Disabling Show notes dims the related settings without erasing their selections.
-
Retained automatic public guild notes and custom-note overrides.
-
Added per-character note hiding and an option to hide notes on yourself.
-
Guild & Communities history refreshes when notes or settings change.
-
Notes remain completely private and local.
-
Character Notes never edits guild roster notes or uses officer notes.
NPC and map notes
-
Added NPC notes stored by NPC ID.
-
Every spawn of the same NPC type can display the same note.
-
Added manual NPC ID entry.
-
Unknown IDs can be saved as placeholders and automatically receive the correct NPC name after the client encounters that NPC.
-
NPC notes appear in NPC tooltips and the main note list.
-
Notes can record their creation date, map, zone, and coordinates.
-
Added standalone map notes with a custom title and note text.
-
Alt-clicking WoW’s Map Pin Sharing pin opens the note editor using that pin’s exact location.
-
Entries with coordinates can:
-
Create a native shared map pin.
-
Open the correct map.
-
Super-track the saved location.
-
Added a searchable map picker with filters for Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor, and Battlegrounds.
-
Client-specific maps such as Darkspear Islands and Zephras Isle are included when available.
Editing and display controls
-
Added a dedicated editor for:
-
Character, NPC, or note title
-
NPC ID
-
Note text
-
Map
-
X and Y coordinates
-
Added per-entry Show/Hide controls.
-
Hidden notes remain saved but no longer appear in chat or tooltips.
-
Added optional Date Entered and Location columns.
-
Added three date formats:
-
20-SEP-26
-
20/09/26
-
09/20/26
-
The main window resizes when date or location columns are disabled.
-
Freed space is automatically given to the note column.
-
Added private chat confirmations after saving and importing notes.
-
Added a confirmed Delete All action in Settings.
Sharing, export, and import
-
Added individual note sharing through readable chat links.
-
Recipients review shared notes before inserting or overwriting anything.
-
Character, NPC, and map notes can all be shared.
-
Added exports for:
-
All
-
Guild
-
Non-guild
-
NPC
-
Exports preserve note metadata, including dates, locations, map IDs, and coordinates.
-
Added Import New Only to add missing records without modifying existing notes.
-
Added replacement modes for All, Guild, Non-guild, and NPC notes.
-
Every replacement requires confirmation.
-
Replacement imports offer:
-
Replace Matching — update imported entries while keeping omitted notes.
-
Replace Entire — clear the selected category before importing it.
-
Import results report added, updated, unchanged, and skipped entries.
-
Import and shared-note windows now remain above the main interface.
Data migration and reliability
-
Added a separate 1.3.1 Migration Exporter for players upgrading from Guild Chat Notes 1.3.0.
-
Character Notes continues to accept legacy shared-note data.
-
Added deletion tracking so older safety data cannot silently restore a deliberately removed note.
-
Added an account-wide database plus an automatic per-character safety mirror.
-
Character Notes selects the newest valid complete database during startup and synchronizes both save locations.
-
Fixed the critical issue that could reset notes and Guild Note Behavior settings after /reload, logout, or login.
Commands
Open Character Notes using:
-
/cn
-
/cnotes
-
/characternotes
The old Guild Chat Notes commands have been removed.
Upgrading from Guild Chat Notes 1.3.0
Guild Chat Notes 1.3.0 did not include an export function. Use the migration package to preserve existing custom notes:
-
Install GuildChatNotes-1.3.1-Migration over the existing 1.3.0 addon.
-
Do not delete the old SavedVariables.
-
Log in and run /gexport.
-
Copy the generated export text.
-
Install Character Notes.
-
Open Import and paste the export.
-
Choose Replace All and confirm the imported notes.
-
Remove the old GuildChatNotes addon folder after verifying the migration.
The migration exporter only reads existing custom notes. It does not modify or delete them.
