What's new

BuffWarden

0.1.0-beta9

  • The settings page is compact: explanations moved onto a hoverable (i). Every one of the 22 settings used to carry two or three lines of grey text underneath it, so the switches you came for were pushed off the bottom of the page. Each label now has a small blue i beside it; point at it and you get the same explanation, word for word. Nothing was shortened and nothing was dropped - and the long-form help is still at the foot of the page in full. The list of buffs is unchanged, because it already worked this way: its explanation has always been on the tick box's own tooltip.

0.1.0-beta8

  • Mages: BuffWarden now watches your familiar and your weapon imbue. Forever gives mages their own scrolls, and two kinds of them are buffs worth being reminded about. A familiar is an hour of Intellect, so it gets an icon when none is out and a click uses the best scroll in your bags - Cat, Frog or Rat, whichever you can use. An imbue goes on your main hand alongside the stones and oils BuffWarden already watches, and there are sixteen of them; "automatic" means the best one you are carrying, or you can name the one you want. Neither ever shows up unless you are actually carrying a scroll you can use: these run out, and an icon you cannot act on is just nagging. Both can be switched off, and /bwarden imbue prints what the game says is on your weapon right now.

  • The welcome window and the launcher bar are gone; their help text is on the settings page. There used to be two ways in - a welcome window with a page per addon, and an optional bar at the screen edge - and now there is one: the minimap button, or /bwarden. Everything BuffWarden's welcome page explained ("What it shows", "One click to fix it", "Move, lock and settings") is at the bottom of its settings page, where somebody looking for help actually goes. /bwarden welcome is gone with the window.

  • New setting: show BuffWarden in the minimap row. All the YippYapp addons share one minimap button, and clicking it opens a row of their icons. This decides whether BuffWarden is in that row. It used to live on a shared YippYapp settings page, which has gone; there is no longer a toggle for grouping, because there is now always one grouped button.

  • New setting: hide while resting. Off by default. Turn it on and BuffWarden puts nothing on screen while you are resting - that is any major city and any inn, which is the same thing as far as the game will tell an addon; there is no way to ask for cities alone. Standing at the auction house being told you are missing a blessing is noise, and the bar comes straight back the moment you walk out. It only silences what is drawn: /bwarden still reports what you are missing, and a ready check still answers, because a question you went and asked deserves an answer wherever you are standing. /bwarden resting toggles it.

  • The blessing row now shows the global cooldown turning over. Every button on the row sweeps together, because that is what actually happens: the cooldown is not per blessing, so casting one makes all of them unavailable for the same second and a half. You can see when the next click will land instead of guessing at it, which is the other half of the fix above - that one stopped a swallowed click from lying, and this one stops you making the click in the first place. It is drawn out of combat only, where buffing a group happens.

  • Fixed: clicking quickly down the blessing row reported people buffed who were not. Blessings share the global cooldown, so three clicks in a second cast once - the client drops the other two without even starting a cast. BuffWarden assumed every click worked, so all three people left the queue, and came back a couple of seconds later once the guess ran out. By then you had moved on. It now checks whether the spell can actually be cast at the moment you press the button: a click the cooldown swallows changes nothing and the person stays where they were, so your next click lands on them. Nothing slows down - a click that really does cast still takes that person off the list at once, which is the whole point of the row.

  • BuffWarden now tells you when your minimap tracking is switched off. If you have Mining or Herbalism, or you are a dwarf, there is tracking that shows ore, herbs and treasure on your minimap - and if it was never turned on, nothing in the game ever mentions it. You just walk past things. BuffWarden puts one icon above the bar for each one you have and have not switched on; clicking it turns that tracking on. It is the only thing in BuffWarden you will ever click once: tracking does not run out, the game remembers it between sessions, and the icon is then gone on that character for good. It never appears during a fight, and each of the three can be unticked in the settings like any buff.

0.1.0-beta7

  • BuffWarden no longer tells you to eat food you are saving. It used to ask whether you own anything that gives Well Fed, and treat owning some as permission to spend it - so a player keeping buff food for a raid was told to eat it. It now asks AutoFeed two questions instead of one: what you own decides whether the reminder is relevant, and what you are willing to use decides whether it suggests eating. Set your buff food aside in AutoFeed and the icon still shows that the buff is missing, with "you have food for this, but it's set aside in AutoFeed" - so you can see that we know, and where to change it if you want to.
  • BuffWarden no longer decides whether someone is in range - it lets you click and lets the game answer. Buttons were going dead, and the tooltip was saying "too far away to cast on", for people standing right next to you: the game's range check can come back hidden from addons on this client, and the distance BuffWarden measured instead was never a casting range at all - it read the same at five yards as at a hundred and fifty. Blizzard's own raid frames were drawing the same man in range at that moment. So no button is ever refused now. Clicking one that is genuinely out of range gives you the game's red message and nothing else - no cooldown, no mana - and that is a far better deal than a button you cannot press.
  • Fixed: the icons vanished for a couple of seconds when you tried to buff someone out of range. Clicking a blessing marks that person done straight away, so you can work down the row without waiting for the server, and a failed cast was supposed to take the mark back. But the game refuses an out-of-range cast on the spot, without ever starting one, so nothing told BuffWarden it had failed - the mark stood its full two seconds, the queue emptied, and the row disappeared and came back. It now listens for the game's refusal itself: the red message appears, the row does not move, and the person stays in the queue.
  • Three clicks on every blessing button. Left-click casts on the person the row names - the one the rules picked. Right-click casts on you, always, whatever the queue says, so you never wait for your own turn. Shift-click casts on whoever you are pointing at, or your target if you are pointing at nothing, which is the override for "he's pulling aggro" and the one way to redirect a cast mid-fight. The game decides between the three when you press the button, not when BuffWarden sets them up, which is why all three keep working in combat.
  • The blessing row is for parties. In a raid, BuffWarden counts instead. The row is a queue, and a queue is only worth something if the person at the front is one you can reach - but the game will not tell an addon where a raid member is standing (it answers for your party only, by design). So in a forty-man every member looked equally close and the queue was simply roster order: you clicked Might and it cast at whoever was third on the list, usually across the room. Half the clicks failed. A raid now gets one icon with a number on it, and its tooltip lists who is missing one; it carries no click, because a queue that cannot be ordered is not something to hand a click to. Your aura buttons are unaffected - those are about you.
  • In a party, distance decides the order you buff people in. Whoever is standing closest comes first, in ten-yard bands, keeping group order inside a band so the queue does not reshuffle every step anyone takes. Where no position can be read it is plain group order, exactly as before.
  • /bwarden debug prints the distance it can measure for each groupmate, the ordering band that comes out of it, and whether "ignore groupmates who are far away" would drop them.
  • The blessing buttons stop moving. While the row is up, each blessing keeps one place in it. They used to sit after the missing-buff icons, so every buff you cast removed an icon and dragged the whole row left under your cursor. What moves now is the one name under the row, and which button is lit.
  • Fixed: buffing yourself by hand did not always make the reminder go away. The game does not always tell an addon who cast an aura, and without a caster the only check BuffWarden had was "is the blessing sitting there the one my rules would have picked". So putting Might on yourself while the rules wanted Wisdom got you asked for Wisdom again two seconds later - you had buffed yourself and the row would not let go. It remembers what it cast on whom now. A blessing that is neither the one the rules want nor one BuffWarden cast is still treated as somebody else's, because that is what it probably is, and your own blessing slot on that person is still free.
  • When you have no aura up, every aura you have trained gets a button; when one is up, there is no button at all. BuffWarden used to offer Devotion Aura and nothing else, so a retribution paladin who had gone and learned Retribution Aura was still being told to cast the tanking one. Which aura you want depends on what you are about to do, so it stops guessing and shows you the ones you know. And the moment any aura is running the buttons are gone, trained or not - only one can be up, so there is nothing left to do there, and an icon that sits around after the job is done is just another buff that looks like it will not go away.
  • When nobody needs a blessing, there is no blessing row. For a few builds it stayed up showing every blessing you knew, greyed out, on the theory that a palette you cannot see is a palette you cannot use. In practice a paladin standing on his own, freshly blessed, saw a line of icons after the job was done and read it as blessings that would not go away. Once somebody does need one you still get the whole set, spares included, so Salvation is a click away without the rules having to agree first.
  • The blessing row has its own line now, separate from the missing-buff icons. They are two different things - one is a set of things you cast, the other is a list of what is missing - and they read as two different things. A blessing nobody is waiting for is also drawn without colour rather than merely faint, because a faint icon still looks like a reminder. It also means the reminders stop sliding sideways when the row changes width.
  • /bwarden debug now prints every blessing on you and what the game says about who cast it, because that is the question behind "I buffed myself and it did not go away": when the game declines to name the caster, BuffWarden has to fall back on guessing whether a blessing is yours.
  • A blessing's tooltip says whether your mana will cover the group. "Enough for 2 of the 4 waiting, 55 each" - the one thing the game will not tell you, since it only ever says no at the moment you cast. It never stops you clicking: if you are short, the game says so for free and nothing is spent.
  • /bwarden scale says what it set. It was the only setting command that changed something and answered nothing, and the value is clamped to 0.5-2, so typing 5 silently gave you 2.
  • Fixed: the row could grow by one aura button on every refresh, without limit, for a paladin who had trained an aura but no blessing yet - or during the moment after login when the game has not finished answering what you know.
  • The name under the row is outlined with a drop shadow, so it reads over grass, stone or a lit spell effect rather than disappearing into whatever you happen to be standing on, and the blessing half of the line is a lighter grey - the grey that reads as "secondary" inside a dark tooltip is nearly invisible on open ground.
  • The name under the row sits directly under the icons instead of a row and a half below them, in a larger font, and centred on the blessing buttons themselves - not on the whole row, since the aura buttons sit beside them and this line only ever names who gets a blessing.
  • One name under the row instead of a clipped one under every icon. A row used to read "you", "you", "Duplo..." - all three the same person, because the slot under a 36-pixel button fits about seven characters and every Forever character now has two names. "Duplo Bonk" clipped to "Duplo...", which is what "Duplo Lasse" clips to as well, so the clip threw away the one thing telling them apart. There is one line under the blessing buttons now: who you would buff next, in full, and which blessing they are getting. You are "you" there rather than your own character name. Every tooltip still names its own button's target.
  • Two tooltips printed the stored name, which carries a realm suffix for anyone from another realm. "Click: cast on" and "Click: whisper" now read like the rest of the addon.
  • Fixed the gold squares. A button is a coloured plate with the icon sitting on top of it - that plate is what gives it its border. Dimming was being applied to the icon alone, so the plate stayed bright and a dimmed button turned into a solid gold square. Whole buttons fade now, so a dimmed blessing looks dim.
  • In combat, the blessing row is frozen but no longer dead. The buttons are the kind the game protects, and it forbids changing them mid-fight, so the name under the row is as of the pull and cannot update - that part is the client's rule, not a setting. What has changed is that they still work: every button keeps a real target and a click tries it. Before, a button the addon had decided was out of range at the pull stayed unclickable for the whole fight.
  • "Ignore groupmates who are far away" now means what it says: someone in another part of the zone, over 200 yards off or on another map, is not counted as missing a buff. It is about who is worth listing, not about what you can reach. In a raid it does nothing, because the game will not tell an addon where a raid member is standing.
  • Fixed: clicking a blessing marked the front of the queue as done rather than the person the button was actually aimed at, so the row and the queue could disagree about who still needed one.
  • Fixed: BuffWarden would tell a paladin to re-bless someone who was carrying Blessing of Sacrifice, Freedom or Protection - overwriting, mid-fight, a blessing the paladin had cast on purpose. All three occupy the same "one Blessing per Paladin" slot as Might and Wisdom, which the game says in the spell description itself. While one of them is up, BuffWarden now leaves that person alone and suggests the normal blessing again once it falls off.
  • BuffWarden never suggests a blessing you have not trained. That was already true of the row, the buttons, the queue and the macros, and of the settings pickers since the last build - but /bwarden bless <name> kings would still store a choice that could never happen. It now says which kinds you know instead, so the command and the settings agree.
  • If you tank as a paladin, your own blessing changes from Might to Kings at level 20. You were getting Might while a protection paladin standing next to you in the group was getting Kings - the same character judged two ways depending on who was looking at him. There is no Blessing of Sanctuary in this game, so 10% of every stat is the best a paladin can put on himself. Below 20 you still get Might, because Kings is not trained yet. If you disagree, set Paladin in "Blessing by class", or yourself in "Who gets which blessing", and your choice wins.
  • The blessing defaults are rebuilt now that Kings is actually trainable. Mage, warlock and hunter get Kings: they have a mana bar but never heal, so 10% of every stat beats mana regen - and for a hunter it is the only one of the three that touches their damage at all. Priest, druid, shaman and paladin keep Wisdom, because any of them might be the healer, and Kings gives a healer nothing to spend. Warrior and rogue keep Might. Below level 20 the Kings classes fall through to Wisdom, and the tooltip says "they want Kings, which you haven't learned yet". Anything you set yourself, per class or per person, still wins over all of it.
  • Train a blessing and the bar knows at once. BuffWarden now listens for the spell-learned event directly instead of waiting for something broader to happen, so walking out of the trainer with Blessing of Kings puts it on the row and in the settings straight away.
  • Fixed: spending a talent point did not clear the list of spells BuffWarden thinks you know. A talent can hand you a whole new spell, not just change what you are - Divine Favor is one BuffWarden reads to tell a healer from a melee - so a fresh healing paladin could keep being treated as melee until something unrelated refreshed it.
  • Well Fed is no longer shown when you have no food that gives it. AutoFeed knows which food buffs, so BuffWarden asks it, and the icon is gone when the answer is "nothing in your bags". It is only hidden on that definite answer: before AutoFeed has scanned, or without AutoFeed installed, the reminder stays exactly as it was, because we cannot see your bags ourselves and guessing would be worse. When we do know the food, the tooltip names it - "Eat your Crag Boar Rib" instead of "Eat something that gives Well Fed".

0.1.0-beta6

  • Settings page: a proper pass over the whole thing. No paragraph is cut off any more - they wrap to the window's real width instead of an assumed one, which is what clipped "Kings beats Wisdom - set it here" and the weapon-buff description. One vertical rhythm throughout, so a description sits under the setting it belongs to and away from the next heading, and every dropdown and stepper lines its control up in the same column, so those rows read like the checkbox rows above them. The blessing rows and the footer got room to breathe.
  • /bwarden debug and the /yippyapp test line now say which signal decided whether you are tanking: your talents, the group's roles, or a shield with no points spent. The answer was always there; which of the three produced it was not, and they are not equally trustworthy.

0.1.0-beta5

  • Weapon buffs: BuffWarden now watches the temporary enchant on your weapons - sharpening stones, weightstones, oils and shaman imbues - and one click applies the right one from your bags (blades get sharpened, blunt weapons weighted; "Which one to use" in the settings decides when you carry both). Nothing is shown unless you have a usable stone or oil, and never for a fishing pole.
  • Well Fed: BuffWarden now tells you when you're missing the food buff. With AutoFeed installed, a click eats your best food through its macro; without it, the icon is a reminder.
  • Rogues: poisons, one hand at a time, with the strongest rank you carry. Pick which poison goes on each hand in the settings (the default is Instant on the main hand, Deadly on the off hand), or turn one hand off.
  • Shamans: pick which weapon imbue to be reminded about (Windfury, Flametongue, Frostbrand, Rockbiter), or let BuffWarden use the best one you know.
  • Paladins: a row with one button per Blessing you know, each showing who the next click will buff. The tooltip always says which Blessing and why, and says so plainly when it's a guess. The defaults are built for dungeons and levelling, where drinking between pulls is what costs you the evening: Wisdom for anyone who casts, Might for pure melee, Kings for warlocks. Hunters get Wisdom, not Might - Blessing of Might is melee attack power and does nothing for a shot. You are the exception to your own rules: you get Might unless you have trained the healer talents, because whatever you eventually become, right now you are the one meleeing. (Forever has no Blessing of Sanctuary, so it is no longer offered anywhere.) "Blessing by class" and "Who gets which blessing" in the settings override all of it, and once the group is geared, Kings beats Wisdom.
  • The blessing row only appears when someone actually needs a blessing from you, so a paladin who has blessed himself and is standing alone sees nothing. When it is up you get every blessing you know, and the ones nobody asked for are dimmed: click one and it goes to whoever you're pointing at in your party frames, or to your target, or to you - which is how you hand Salvation to the one pulling aggro off the tank.
  • BuffWarden now reads your own talents, which Forever keeps in one tree per class with the three old tabs inside it. Nothing about other players changes - we still can't see their spec, and don't pretend to - but about ourselves we no longer guess.
  • Fixed: a holy paladin with a shield was told to keep Righteous Fury up. That is advice that gets a healer killed, and it happened because a shield was the only way to tell a tank from a healer. Now your talents decide, and the shield is only used before you have spent a point.
  • Your own blessing follows your talents too: points in Holy get you Wisdom, points in Protection or Retribution get you Might, and the tooltip says which - "31 points in Protection, so mana isn't your first problem". Spent nothing yet? You get Might, and it says so.
  • /bwarden debug now prints what BuffWarden thinks you are: level, class, shield, role and the points in each talent tab.
  • BuffWarden only offers what you can actually use. The blessing pickers list the blessings you have trained and nothing else, so a level 12 paladin is not invited to assign Kings to the mage and then wonder why nothing happens. A weapon imbue you have not trained is marked "(not learned)", a poison you are out of says "(none in your bags)", and both fall back to the best you do have.
  • This one works in combat. Every real buff is hidden from addons during a fight on Forever, but a weapon enchant is item state, not a buff, so BuffWarden shows a small readout with the time left while you fight, and warns when it is running out. Applying it still waits until combat ends.

0.1.0-beta4

  • Updated shared YippYapp library.

0.1.0-beta3

  • Warriors: Battle Shout reminder. It's a short buff that costs rage, so it only reminds out of combat, in a group, while you have the rage to shout (usually right after a fight), and warns when a tenth of its duration is left (read from the buff itself, so about 18 seconds for a 3-minute shout). Untick "Battle Shout" in the settings to turn it off.
  • "Running out soon" (orange) now warns at 5 minutes instead of 2, so there's time to ask for a new buff. Short buffs warn at a tenth of their duration (at least a minute), so a 10-minute self-buff isn't orange half the time.
  • Orange icons show the time left, and the tooltip says e.g. "Arcane Intellect runs out in 4m 12s".
  • New setting under Bar: "Warn when a buff has less than [5] min left". If you never changed it, you get the new 5-minute default.

0.1.0-beta2

  • Groupmates who are far away (another zone or over 200 yards) no longer count. Those just out of cast range still show, dimmed, so icons don't flicker. Turn it off with "Ignore groupmates who are far away".
  • In combat the bar keeps its pre-pull state with a small clock and updates when combat ends; buffs can't be read in combat on Forever.
  • No more errors from reading buffs while the game keeps them hidden.

0.1.0-beta1

First beta, built for WoW: Forever.

  • A small row of icons shows the buffs you're missing: your own (Inner Fire, Mage Armor, Demon Skin, Paladin auras, Aspects, Lightning or Water Shield...) and the group buffs someone in your party can give (Fortitude, Divine Spirit, Arcane Intellect, Mark of the Wild, Blessings). When nothing is missing, the row is gone.
  • Gold icon: you can cast it. The number shows how many in your group are missing it, and a click casts it on the nearest one.
  • Grey icon: a groupmate has it. A click whispers them to ask. Only groupmates high enough level to have the spell are suggested, and a talent buff like Divine Spirit only once someone in the group is seen carrying it.
  • Orange icon: the buff runs out soon (under 2 minutes by default, /bwarden time <seconds> to change).
  • Blessings: you should carry one from each paladin in the group. As a paladin, BuffWarden picks Kings, Wisdom or Might per target.
  • Optionally lists what's missing in chat on a ready check.
  • Unlock the bar to see a preview and drag it into place; the row always grows to the right from where you put it. Hidden in combat.
  • Buffs can't be read in combat on Forever; the bar keeps its pre-pull state and updates when combat ends. If you keep the bar shown in combat, it wears a small clock until then. During some encounters the game hides buffs outside combat too, and BuffWarden shows nothing instead of guessing.
  • Settings under Options > AddOns > YippYapp > BuffWarden (or /bwarden): which buffs to watch, hiding in combat, the ready-check list.
  • Minimap button (behind the YippYapp minimap button when you use several YippYapp addons), an optional button on the YippYapp launcher bar, and a page in the shared YippYapp welcome window (/yippyapp).
