Description

BossTips — World of Warcraft One-Line Dungeon Guide AddOn

Current Version: 1.4.5 (Ace3 Architecture Rewrite)

Built-in guide data: 125 normal 5-player dungeons (1.0–12.0), 8 dungeons in the current Mythic+ pool, and full guides for 439 bosses across 13 raid tiers. Compatible with WoW Retail 12.0 / 12.1 clients.

First and foremost, thanks to NGA user 以德报德 (Yi De Bao De) for the original addon. I have only modified and expanded it with boss and trash data for the 11.x expansion and beyond.

The original post by 以德报德 can be found here: Late-to-the-party one-line dungeon guide addon (includes 8 new TWW dungeons and first 4 raid bosses)

My modified version retains the original author's copyright and link information. Everyone is welcome to check the original post as well. If 以德报德 has any concerns, this thread can be removed. The reason for opening a separate thread is to keep refining this addon and maintain ongoing updates — very few people scroll all the way to the bottom of the original author's thread to see the latest changes.

✨ Core Features

  • One-line strategies: key interrupts, priority kills, and mechanics to avoid for bosses / trash are marked with {rt1} (Star) / {rt8} (Skull) raid markers — the essentials at a glance.
  • Full expansion coverage: 125 built-in normal 5-player dungeons (1.0–12.0), 8 dungeons in the current Mythic+ season pool, and 439 bosses across 13 raid tiers.
  • Five difficulty tiers: LFR / Normal / Heroic / Mythic / Mythic Keystone; each boss can store per-difficulty guides, raid guides are written cumulatively (higher difficulty includes lower-difficulty content); unwanted difficulties can be hidden in settings.
  • Auto-trigger on instance entry: a floating BossTips button appears near the chat frame → matches the instance name → shows boss buttons → click to open the guide window → one-click send to chat.
  • Built-in guide editor: add / rename / delete instances and targets, per-difficulty editing, auto-fill DBM / BigWigs encounter IDs, base64 export / import (cross-client safe).
  • Native settings panel: ESC → Options → AddOns → BossTips, or slash commands /bts set, /bts edit, /bts manage, /bts help.
  • Flexible posting: send to Raid / Party / Say / Yell, with independent left / right-click channel configuration; right-click a boss button to send instantly.
  • Smart matching: exact name → normalized name → alias → instanceId fallback, stable on 12.0 / 12.1 (Midnight).

✨ Version Changelog

Starting from 1.3.0, the addon underwent a complete Ace3 architecture rewrite, shifting from the original "single-file + mouse-hover NPC auto-reminder" model to an "independent editor + instance-name matching + manual send" model. With 1.3.2, the settings entry was integrated into the game's native options tab.

Version 1.4.5 (Latest)

  1. Current-combat boss focus display: Added a "Show only current combat boss" feature, toggleable in settings or the guide window. When enabled, only the currently engaged boss (or the one you manually expanded) is shown; all other bosses and trash are hidden, keeping combat information focused.
  2. In-instance message sending fix: Fixed an issue where guide messages could not be sent to chat channels in some in-instance environments.
  3. Debug toggle: Added a debug switch. If you encounter messages failing to send or other issues, enable debug and post the debug output in the thread — I will fix it promptly upon seeing it.
  4. Combat-safe windows: The guide panel and settings window can now be opened and closed during combat, no longer restricted by combat lockdown.
  5. Combat send queue optimization: Due to Blizzard API restrictions, messages sent while in combat are queued and automatically delivered to the chat window once you leave combat, preventing guide loss.

Version 1.4.4

  • Multi-language support: Added English and Traditional Chinese display, covering the UI and all dungeon / raid guides.
  • Encounter ID auto-match: Queries all instance encounter IDs via BigWigs and automatically switches to the current boss when combat begins.
  • Mythic+ guide rework: Random difficulty uses AI-generated initial strategies based on BigWigs ability names; Normal–Mythic difficulties use popular 12.1 Mythic+ guides from WeChat public accounts; Mythic+ (Keystone) difficulty is an AI-summarized comprehensive guide merging Normal–Mythic content.
  • Default difficulty channel: Added a fixed-difficulty setting — any of the above difficulties can be set as the default sending difficulty in settings.

Thanks to the following 12.1 guide providers (WeChat public account links):

Version 1.4.3

  1. Full raid guide coverage: Added complete guides for 13 raid tiers and 439 bosses from 1.0–12.1, supporting five difficulty tiers: LFR / Normal / Heroic / Mythic / Mythic Keystone (raid guides are written cumulatively, with higher difficulty including lower-difficulty content).
  2. 12.0 / 12.1 (Midnight) content: Added the Venomous Abyss raid (12.1 S2) and 12.0 normal 5-player dungeons; added the 12.1 Mythic+ season pool (8 dungeons: 4 current rotation + 4 legacy reworks), merged into the shared guide layer.
  3. Guide manager / editor: Settings tree split into 5-player dungeons / raids, with Mythic+ pinned to the top; editor supports per-difficulty editing, DBM / BigWigs encounter ID auto-fill; export / import switched to pure Lua base64 (cross-client safe), supporting custom guides and full configuration import / export.
  4. Usability and stability fixes: Main button frame strata lowered to LOW (no longer blocks other UI); fixed auto-mode having no visible entry (floating button is always present; clicking it when no current instance guide exists opens the editor for browsing); fixed right-click send channel registration, right-click main button opens settings directly; fixed multiple load-time crashes (missing localization references, SetHyperlinksEnabled nil, FontString hyperlink fallback); enhanced instance entry matching (exact name → normalized name → alias → instanceId fallback).
  5. Compatibility: 125 built-in normal 5-player dungeons (1.0–12.0) + 8 current Mythic+ + 13 raid tiers / 439 bosses; adapted for WoW Retail 12.0 / 12.1 (.toc interface 120005–120200, safe for 12.2); built-in Ace3 libraries, works offline.

Version 1.3.2

  1. Settings window moved to native options tab: Access directly via ESC → Options → AddOns → BossTips, no separate window needed.
  2. Default send channel changed to Yell, and left / right-click send channels can be freely switched in the settings bar (Raid / Party / Say / Yell / Emote).
  3. Right-click the main button to open the settings window directly.
  4. Added /bts set command to open the settings window.

Version 1.3.1

  1. Updated guides for 12.0 S1 season legacy 4 dungeons.
  2. Right-click a boss button to send the guide directly, no need to open the guide window — significantly faster.
  3. Default font size adjusted to 14 (was 18).
  4. Main button position saving changed to account-wide shared (no longer per-character).
  5. Boss lists for all dungeons display in the order sequence edited in bossdata.lua, adjustable by the user.
  6. Fixed an issue where 12.0 S1 legacy 4 dungeon guides could not be sent normally.
  7. Fixed an issue where guides could not be sent to chat channels in Mythic+ / raids when grouped via the Group Finder.

Version 1.3.0 (Major Rewrite)

Reason for rewrite: In 12.0, hostile NPC information inside instances was encrypted, making it impossible to auto-remind boss strategies via mouse-hover NPC detection. The new version switches to an interaction model of match instance name → show corresponding boss buttons based on guide count → click button to open guide window → one-click send.

  1. Supports 12.0 normal 5-player dungeons (Season 1 guides to be updated later).
  2. Added /bts settings to open the settings menu, where boss frame / guide frame pop-up direction can be modified.
  3. "Auto-hide guide button on maps without guides" can be configured (prevents the button from appearing on unrelated maps).
  4. Since boss buttons are shown per boss count, all trash guides have been removed (only boss strategies remain).
  5. Fixed position sync issues — multiple alts can share button / frame positions.
  6. Added /bts help to view help information.

📸 Editor & Settings Panel Overview

Open the settings window in-game via /bts settings or ESC → Options → AddOns → BossTips. The settings window has three tabs:

Tab Purpose
Settings Display mode, smart expand, lock window, chat channel, font style / size, theme style, current-combat boss focus, Debug toggle
Guide Configuration Enable / disable versions by 5-player dungeon / raid category, hide individual dungeons
Profile base64 export / import of custom guides and configuration

Guide Configuration Tab

The editor is opened via the "Open Guide Editor" button in the settings panel or /bts edit, and supports:

  • Add / Rename / Delete instances and targets
  • Per-difficulty (Normal / Heroic / Mythic / LFR / Mythic Keystone) guide editing
  • DBM / BigWigs encounter ID auto-fill (required for the smart-expand feature)
  • Text notes: use {rt8} {rt1} markers to flag must-interrupt / priority-kill abilities, auto-saved on input

The raid boss editor supports all of the above features as well, with difficulty tiers automatically switching based on actual raid progress (Normal → Heroic → Mythic → Mythic Keystone).

Usage (Based on the New Version)

When you are inside an instance, a BossTips floating button appears near the chat frame:

  • No instance matched / no boss selected: button is disabled, showing "No Guide"
  • Left-click the main button: shows the boss list for the current instance
  • Click a boss name: opens the guide window, then click "Send" to post the guide to the configured channel
  • Right-click a boss button (1.3.1+): skips the window and sends that boss's guide directly to the right-click channel configured in settings
  • Right-click the main button (1.3.2+): opens the settings window directly
  • In-combat sending (1.4.5+): sends made during combat are queued and automatically delivered once you leave combat

Send channel priority (customizable): Raid > Party > Say > Yell (1.3.2 default: Yell)
