Completely rewrote the mod for a v2.0. Detailed description below.
TLDR: Use mode 3 if you have lua errors hidden, as this gives the cleanest result, the lua errors are harmless and just notify you that we hit a secret wall during encounters.
BNet Whisper Class Color
Colors the sender of a Battle.net (RealID) whisper using their class color when they're currently online on a WoW character — the same way party, guild, and normal whispers already show class colors, but for Battle.net friends too.
Why three modes?
Blizzard's chat system has a quirk: while you're in certain restricted content (raids, dungeons, keystones, rated PvP), whisper sender info can become a "secret" value that addons aren't allowed to touch. If an addon recolors the name and that content happens to be active, WoW can throw a Lua error.
I tested extensively and found no single approach is both always-on and error-proof — so instead of picking one trade-off for you, this addon gives you three, switchable any time with one command:
| Mode | What it does | Errors? | Colors during instances/combat? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 — Safe | Adds a colored [CharacterName] tag before the message, name itself stays default |
Never | Yes, always |
| 2 — Full Guard (default) | Recolors the actual name | Never | No — off during any instance/combat/encounter |
| 3 — Always On | Recolors the actual name, all the time | Possible, in instances | Yes |
If you want zero risk of ever seeing a Lua error, use Mode 1. If you want the cleanest look and don't mind losing color while raiding/in dungeons, stick with the default, Mode 2. If you want color everywhere and don't mind an occasional harmless error message, use Mode 3.
Commands
/bnwcc Show current mode and live status
/bnwcc 1 Switch to Mode 1 (Safe)
/bnwcc 2 Switch to Mode 2 (Full Guard) — default
/bnwcc 3 Switch to Mode 3 (Always On)
/bnwcc combat on Mode 3 only: also skip coloring while in combat
/bnwcc combat off Mode 3 only: turn that off again
Your chosen mode is saved automatically and carries over between play sessions.
Notes
- Only works for people on your Battle.net friends list.
- Not designed to run alongside chat-replacement addons (e.g. ElvUI's chat module) — expect conflicts if you use both.
- Any Mode 3 error is cosmetic and doesn't affect gameplay — it just means that one whisper displayed in the default color instead of class color. Again, turn off the display of lua errors and no harm is done.
