Asylum Companion Sounds
Asylum Companion Sounds is the optional custom-audio companion for the World of Warcraft Retail addon Asylum Companion.
It provides a separate and predictable media folder that World of Warcraft can index when the game starts. Asylum Companion can then discover audio files chosen by the player and make them available inside its Sound module.
This companion does not bundle commercial music, copyrighted voice clips, or third-party audio. It only provides the lightweight addon structure required to expose user-provided audio files to Asylum Companion.
FEATURES
• 50 general custom sound slots, named custom_sound_01 through custom_sound_50. • 50 personal ambience slots, named ambiance_sound_01 through ambiance_sound_50. • OGG audio support, with MP3 checked as a fallback when supported by the game client. • Automatic integration with the Asylum Companion Sound page and personal-library scanner. • Personal sounds can be selected for supported spell links. • Personal sounds can be added to custom audio packs. • Ambience tracks can be grouped into packs for randomized playback. • A separate folder keeps personal media away from updates of the main Asylum Companion addon. • No Lua editing is required after installation.
HOW IT AFFECTS THE PLAYER EXPERIENCE
Players can personalize spell casts and addon alerts with their own audio files without modifying the main addon.
For example, a Mage can place a file named custom_sound_04.ogg in this folder and associate it with Teleport from the Asylum Companion Sound page.
A player can also add several files named ambiance_sound_01.ogg, ambiance_sound_02.ogg and so on, then include them in a custom pack. Asylum Companion can select tracks from that pack during supported audio events.
Playback is local to the player using the addon. Audio files are not sent to other group members.
Custom spell audio plays alongside the original Blizzard spell sound. This companion does not replace, mute, or modify Blizzard’s original sound files.
WHY USE A SEPARATE COMPANION ADDON?
Files placed directly inside the main Asylum Companion folder could be lost when that addon is updated or reinstalled.
Asylum Companion Sounds gives players a dedicated location for personal media. Updating the main Asylum Companion addon does not overwrite files stored in the companion folder.
Players should still back up their personal audio files before updating, reinstalling, or deleting Asylum Companion Sounds itself.
REQUIREMENTS
• World of Warcraft Retail. • The main Asylum Companion addon is required. • Asylum Companion Sounds has no configuration window and does not play audio by itself. • A full game restart is required after adding or renaming files. • Using /reload is not enough to expose newly added media because World of Warcraft indexes addon files when the game client starts.

SUPPORTED FILE NAMES
General custom sounds:
custom_sound_01.ogg custom_sound_02.ogg … custom_sound_50.ogg
Personal ambience tracks:
ambiance_sound_01.ogg ambiance_sound_02.ogg … ambiance_sound_50.ogg
The same slot names can use the .mp3 extension, although OGG is recommended for the most reliable compatibility.
If both OGG and MP3 versions exist for the same slot, the OGG version is selected first.
Files must be placed directly at the root of the AsylumCompanion_Sounds folder. Files stored inside additional subfolders are not scanned.
Names outside the 01–50 slot range are not detected.
EXAMPLES
custom_sound_04.ogg custom_sound_26.ogg ambiance_sound_01.ogg ambiance_sound_12.ogg
TROUBLESHOOTING
File not detected: Fully close World of Warcraft and start it again. A simple /reload is not sufficient.
Companion status says Missing or Disabled: Enable Asylum Companion Sounds in the character-selection AddOns list.
MP3 file not detected or not playable: Convert the file to OGG Vorbis, keep the same slot name, fully restart the game and scan again.
File still not detected: Make sure it is placed directly inside the AsylumCompanion_Sounds folder and that its name exactly matches one of the supported slots.
Both OGG and MP3 exist for the same slot: The OGG version has priority.
Before updating or reinstalling: Back up personal audio files stored in the companion folder.
