Angler's Journal 0.18.0
What's new
v0.18.0 — Whatever comes out of the water
New
A page for a fish no book has
- A catch the journal had never heard of, new loot above all, is kept like any other.
- Catch enough of one and it earns a tale of its own, as the fish the journal already knew do.
Changed
Judged by what it is
- On WoW Forever, a new fish is a fish whatever its quality. Before, an uncommon one was filed as a Lucky Find.
- On every client, a common thing that cannot be a fish, such as a small chest, is now among the Odd Things.
- Your collection sorts itself again the next time you open it. Nothing is lost.
Asking for a journal is direct again
- The WoW Forever beta's whispers are fixed, so the dialog that warned of slow whispers and offered a party invitation is gone. Asking a player outside your group simply asks.
v0.17.0 — The journal in your own language
New
Seven languages
- The journal now speaks the language of your game: English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Russian and Simplified Chinese. Any other client gets English. There is nothing to set up.
- Everything is in it: the windows, the tales and notes, the names you earn, the rumors, and the lines your character says while fishing.
- The six new languages are a first draft. They were written without a native reader and have not been tried in every client. If a text runs off a button, a name does not match the game's, or a line reads wrong, please report it.
Emotes in English, if you prefer
- Your character's emotes are read by whoever stands near, and follow your game's language.
- On a realm where English is spoken,
/aj rp englishkeeps them in English. The same command goes back.
Changed
- Rumors about a water turn up in every language: they are found by the zone itself, not by its English name.
- Dates are written the way your language writes them.
v0.16.0 — A journal that says why
New
Every tale says why it is there
- Hold the cursor over a tale and the journal tells what it saw: how many came up at night, how long you have been catching them, every water they came out of.
- A fish's tale is a Fish Tale. Junk's is headed Not a Fish, and something of worth A Lucky Find.
- A find's line is no longer picked at random: each is said of the find it is true of.
The collection in parts
- Memorable Catches first, then Fish, Odd Things and Lucky Finds, each named at the head of every page it runs to. In the grid, the same order without the names.
- In the list, a small scroll beside a catch says its page has a tale, and a hook that it was hard won.
Days remembered go on growing
- The first day of a kind is always kept. A later one is kept beside it when it outdoes the ones before.
- Forget This Day removes a day from the journal, after asking.
Tabs that breathe
- The Fishing Trip tab glows softly, in and out, while a trip lasts.
- The Loose Pages tab does the same while something is unread.
Dismiss a recap
- A button at the foot of a trip's recap goes on to the book of trips.
Changed
- A great many means a great many. Five tales that rest on nothing but how many you have caught now ask for more (Firefin Snapper, Rainbow Fin Albacore, Darkclaw Lobster, Rockscale Cod, Spotted Yellowtail: 100 to 200). A character below the new bar loses that tale until it gets there.
- Left pages turn, right pages scroll, on every window but The Angler. The list of trips is read a page at a time again; Known Waters scrolls on the right.
- The collection's page is titled Collection.

v0.15.0 — Classic Era catches up, and the journal opens at its angler
New
Classic Era and Hardcore, brought up to date
- Everything built for WoW Forever now looks right on Classic Era: icons in the Spellbook's own slots, a parchment page without its seam, the window and its tabs as the game draws its own, and the quest log's ink.
- Your Fishing skill shows on The Angler's page.
- The Loose Pages tab carries a mark while something is unread.
- On Classic Era there is no map button, search box or layout menu.
End a trip when you say so
- The Gone Fishing page has an End Fishing Trip button. It also says that a trip ends on its own once your line has been out of the water a few minutes.
Fish Tales that say why
- Hold the cursor over a Fish Tale and the journal tells what it saw: how many came up at night, on a bare hook, in foul weather, the one that kept you waiting.
- A treasure's tale tells where and when it came up.
One life
- On a Hardcore realm your character is, now and then, wary of the water. Seldom, like the lines of your class.
Changed
- The tabs have a new order and two new names: The Angler, Collection, Known Waters, Fishing Trip, Loose Pages. "Profession" is now The Angler and "Journal" is Collection.
/ajstill opens your collection. - A trip's recap is set from the left margin, as the quest log sets a quest.
- Page arrows sit at the two ends of the page's foot, as in the Spellbook.
- A trip's catch fills its page and scrolls when there is more.
- Notes on a page are evenly spaced.

v0.14.1 — Loose Pages, another angler's journal, and an icon
On CurseForge this is one upload: v0.14.0 was released on GitHub only, hours before, so its features are listed here as new.
New
An icon of its own
- Angler's Journal now shows its own icon in the game's AddOns list.
Loose Pages (a fifth tab)
- A new tab for the papers tucked into your journal since you last opened it.
- You get a notice when you earn a name, a Fish Tale, an Angler's Tale or a Day Remembered. Each notice has a Go to Page button that opens the page it is written on.
- On Sundays, a flyer for the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza appears, with a map button that opens the world map on Stranglethorn Vale. It goes when the tournament is over.
- Dismiss a page and it never comes back. Pages you leave lying disappear by themselves after two weeks.
- The tab shows a small "!" while there is something you have not read. Nothing is counted.
Read another angler's journal
- Right-click a player (their portrait, their party frame or their name in chat) and choose View Fishing Journal.
- They get a prompt, like a party invitation, and can Accept or Decline.
- If they accept, their journal opens in its own window, with three tabs:
- Profession: their signature catch, habits, favorite fishing hole and preferred waters, and their story so far (names earned, company, the waters along the way, their tales).
- Journal: their Fishing Collection, with the Fish Tale and first water of the catch you pick.
- Known Waters: their waters with their marks, and for the one you pick: their first cast there and what they first recorded in it.
- Both players need Angler's Journal and the Fishing profession.
Rumors from other anglers
- Reading someone's journal may leave a rumor in your Loose Pages about something you have not found yet: a fish and where they caught it, their signature catch, their favorite spot, their preferred waters.
- One rumor from each angler a day, three a day in all.
New commands
/aj readasks the player you have targeted for their journal./aj read Nameasks by name./aj lendturns on or off whether other anglers may ask to read yours.
Your journal stays yours
- Nothing is sent unless you accept, every time you are asked.
- Only a summary is shared: no fishing trips, and nothing you did not record.
- A journal you read is not saved. Close the window and it is gone.
Known issues
- WoW Forever beta: whispers are currently delayed on the beta. Asking a player who is not in your party goes by whisper, so it can take a minute or two. Until that is fixed the journal warns you and offers Invite to Party: in a party, the request and the journal arrive at once.
- Reading a journal works between players of the same faction.
- Classic Era / Hardcore remains experimental and was not tested for this version.
