Accents of Azeroth

Speak in the accent of your race. Dwarves, trolls, goblins, elves and more, with adjustable intensity and a unique voice for every character.

Accents of Azeroth

Ever wanted your dwarf to actually sound like a dwarf? Accents of Azeroth gives your chat the accent of your race. Type normally, and your words come out in a lore-flavored dialect:

You type: Yes, we should probably leave before they come back, my friend. Your dwarf says: Aye, we should probably leave afore they come back, me friend.

Every character gets their own voice, so two dwarves won't sound exactly alike.

Features

  • 16 racial accents, picked automatically from your character's race
  • Three intensity levels: Subtle, Moderate, or Heavy
  • Gender-aware terms: a dwarf might call people lad, lass, or mate
  • Unique voice per character, with a reroll option if you want a different one
  • Speak as any race: play a troll who talks like a goblin if you like
  • Custom words for each race, so you can add your own slang
  • Preview before sending: see three versions of a line without posting it
  • Settings window with everything in one place

Accents

Race Flavor
Dwarf Hearty Khaz Modan: aye, ye, nae, by me beard
Troll Darkspear: ya, mon, you be needin'
Orc Blunt and clipped: zug zug, Lok'tar
Goblin Fast-talking hustler: time is money, pal
Gnome Technical: affirmative, a 73 percent chance
Night Elf Ancient and formal: Ishnu-alah, Elune reveals all
Blood Elf Refined and haughty: Bal'a dash, how terribly common
Draenei Formal: Archenon poros, the Light guides us
Human Stormwind: well met, for the Alliance
Gilnean Victorian: quite so, old chap
Kul Tiran Sailor: bain't, shipmate, blow me down
Forsaken Dry and grim: how dreary, try not to die
Tauren Earthy: walk with the Earth Mother
Pandaren Warm: a watched brew never ferments
Vulpera Scrappy: shinies, caravan-kin
Skyborne Wind and sky: fair winds, wind-sister

Allied races use their parent race's accent (Dark Iron uses Dwarf, Zandalari uses Troll, and so on).

Retail and WoW Forever

  • Both versions: your typed chat is translated automatically as you send it in Say, Yell, Party, Raid, Guild and Instance chat.
  • Retail: Addon chat is blocked by Blizzard during boss encounters, Mythic+ and rated PvP, so type normally there. If a typed line is ever not changed, you can send it with /aoa say, /aoa guild, /aoa party and the other channel commands.

Make sure you download the file for your version of the game.

Commands

Command What it does
/aoa Open the settings window
/aoa say Translate and send (also yell, guild, party, raid, instance, rw)
/aoa preview See the result without sending
/aoa race Speak as another race (auto to match yours)
/aoa intensity subtle, moderate or heavy Set accent strength
/aoa gender male, female or neutral Set terms of address
/aoa reroll Get a new voice for this character
/aoa add word=replacement Add your own word
/aoa auto on or off Turn auto-translate on or off
/aoa debug Show if the typed-chat hook is active and why the last line was or was not changed

Plays nice with your UI

  • Only changes chat you type. Boss mods, damage meters and other addons are never touched.
  • Whispers, emotes, officer chat and trade chat are left alone.
  • Item links, raid markers and slash commands are never changed.
  • No data leaves your computer. Settings are saved locally like any other addon.

Installing

Step 1: Pick the right download

There are two files. Grab the one that matches the game you play:

You play… Download this file
Retail (the current live game) Accents of Azeroth (Retail)
WoW Forever Accents of Azeroth (WoW Forever)

Not sure which you play? In the Battle.net app, look at the version dropdown just above the Play button.

The big Download button always grabs the newest file, which may not be your version. To be safe, open the Files tab and pick the one labeled for your game. Playing both? Download both and install each one in its own game folder.

Easiest way: the CurseForge app

The CurseForge app (Windows and Mac) finds your game, picks the right version and keeps the addon updated for you. Search for Accents of Azeroth and click Install.

Manual install on Windows

  1. Download the zip for your version.
  2. Right-click it and choose Extract All.
  3. Open the Battle.net app, select World of Warcraft, pick your game version, click the gear icon next to Play and choose Show in Explorer.
  4. Open the game folder (_retail_ for Retail, _classic_beta_ for WoW Forever), then Interface, then AddOns.
  5. Move the AccentsOfAzeroth folder into AddOns.

The usual location is C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\_retail_\Interface\AddOns

Manual install on Mac

  1. Download the zip for your version. Safari usually unzips it for you. If not, double-click the zip in your Downloads folder.
  2. Open the Battle.net app, select World of Warcraft, pick your game version, click the gear icon next to Play and choose Show in Finder.
  3. Open the game folder (_retail_ for Retail, _classic_beta_ for WoW Forever), then Interface, then AddOns. If Interface or AddOns doesn't exist yet, create it (spelling and capitals matter).
  4. Drag the AccentsOfAzeroth folder into AddOns.

The usual location is /Applications/World of Warcraft/_retail_/Interface/AddOns

Check it worked

The folder should sit directly inside AddOns, like this:

AddOns/AccentsOfAzeroth/AccentsOfAzeroth.toc

If you see AddOns/AccentsOfAzeroth/AccentsOfAzeroth/... (a folder inside a folder), move the inner folder up one level. This is the most common reason the addon doesn't show up.

Then launch the game, click AddOns on the character select screen, make sure Accents of Azeroth is ticked, log in and type /aoa.

Troubleshooting

  • Shows as "out of date": you probably installed the wrong version for your game. Swap in the other download.
  • Typed chat isn't changing: make sure auto-translate is on (/aoa auto on), then type a line in /say and run /aoa debug. It shows whether the addon saw the line and why it skipped it. You can always use /aoa say instead. Chat isn't changed during boss encounters, Mythic+ and rated PvP.
  • Not in the AddOns list at all: check for the doubled folder above, and make sure it went into the right game folder (_retail_ vs _classic_beta_).
