Controls

Input Action
Left-click Pick up a stack; click again to place/merge it, or swap with a different stack.
Right-click Use/equip non-stackable usable items such as armor, shields, and weapons. For stackable items, pick up half, rounded up. While holding items, place one instead.
Shift + right-click Pick up one, including non-stackable gear. While holding items, place one.
Shift + left-click Transfer to/from the open chest. Without a chest, transfer between hotbar and backpack.
Hold Shift + left-drag Quick-transfer each stack crossed, once per gesture.
Left-drag while already holding items Divide evenly among eligible slots; keep the remainder on the cursor.
Right-drag while already holding items Place one in each slot crossed, once per gesture.
Double left-click Collect matching items from the visible inventories into the held stack, up to its limit.
Shift + double left-click while holding any item Transfer all stacks matching the clicked stack from that inventory to the other open inventory. The cursor item stays held; full destinations leave overflow in the source.
1–8 while hovering a slot Exchange that slot with the numbered hotbar slot. Occupied slots swap whole stacks (even matching items); an empty slot receives the other slot's item. Works in your inventory and the open chest, with an empty cursor.
Q while hovering a stack Drop exactly one item onto the ground, without picking it up first.
Ctrl + Q while hovering a stack Drop the entire hovered stack onto the ground. Either Control key works.
Ctrl + right-click Valheim's original equip/use action, including all usable stackable items, with an empty cursor. Either Control key works.
Click outside the inventory Valheim's original drop action.
Close the inventory Cancel the held selection; unplaced items remain safely in their source slot.

Full merge targets leave the held items where they are. Quick-transfer never drops items when no chest is open. Gamepad and touch controls are unchanged. Quest-item restrictions, container ownership, stack compatibility, and native inventory change notifications are retained. Quick-transfer and number-key exchanges with a chest unequip outgoing equipment; number-key exchanges within your inventory preserve equipped items.

All usable stackable items (arrows, food, potions, etc.) keep the splitting controls, even with only one item left. Use Ctrl + right-click to activate them. Alt is no longer a special use modifier. Non-stackable items without a usable/equippable action can still be picked up with right-click.

Intentional differences from Minecraft

This changes Valheim's inventory controls, not its crafting or equipment systems. Number shortcuts use the top-row 1–8 keys, matching Valheim's eight hotbar slots. Keyboard shortcuts are disabled while typing or during a mouse gesture; number shortcuts also require an empty cursor. Q only drops items while hovering an inventory slot with the inventory open, leaving its normal gameplay behavior unchanged outside the inventory.

For bulk transfer, keep Shift held and click the same stack twice within 0.3 seconds, while already holding any item. The first click does not place the cursor item. The clicked stack determines the item type, including Valheim's quality/world-level distinctions. A chest must be open; the action works for both depositing and withdrawing.

Held items remain reserved in their real source inventory, using Valheim's existing cursor state. The source slot displays only the unselected remainder. Consequently, a partially picked stack cannot swap with an unrelated item; place it first. Whole-stack swaps keep the displaced stack on the cursor. Double-click collection is limited by free space in the underlying source stack. No temporary, unsaved inventory is used.

Hover-drop and bulk transfer never remove items reserved on the cursor. If the hovered/source slot is partially selected, only its visible, unselected remainder is eligible; the held portion stays on the cursor. Q uses Valheim's actual drop action, including ground-item spawning, equipment handling, and quest-item protection.
