Basic Training

Location: Great Lakes Naval Training Center, near Chicago.
Duration: Eight weeks.
Purpose: Transforms civilians into Ensigns through rigorous basic training.

Enlisted Ranks:

Seaman Recruit (SR): The lowest enlisted rank, no uniform insignia. Automatically advances to E-2 after six months of satisfactory service.
Seaman (SN): Performs ship maintenance, equipment maintenance, and operational duties. Serves as a lookout, helmsman, and member of damage control and security teams.
Petty Officer Third Class (PO3): Transition from being led to leading. Assumes higher responsibility and accountability.
Petty Officer Second Class (PO2): Increased expectations in technical expertise and leadership. Manages more resources and larger work groups.
Petty Officer First Class (PO1): Transition from Junior to Senior Petty Officer. Prepares for the next step in the career, Chief Petty Officer.
Chief Petty Officer (CPO): Unique responsibilities and privileges. Joins an exclusive fellowship and assumes a special responsibility to comrades.

Officer Ranks:

United States Naval Academy (USNA): Selected for officer training. Four-year coeducational federal service academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Lieutenant, Junior Grade (LTJG): Promotion occurs approximately two years after commissioning. Serves as a Division Officer or in training.

Lieutenant Commander (LCDR): Department Head or Executive Officer. Commanding Officer of smaller ships or units.
Commander (CDR): Commands Frigates, Destroyers, Fast Attack Submarines, Aviation Squadrons, SEAL Teams, or shore installations.
Captain (CAPT): Commands major units such as Aircraft Carriers, Amphibious Assault Ships, Cruisers, Destroyer Squadrons, Carrier Air Wings, Ballistic Missile Submarines, Submarine Squadrons, SEAL Groups, and major shore installations.
Rear Admiral Lower Half (RDML): One-star rank. Commands Amphibious Groups, Carrier-Cruiser Groups, or serves as a deputy to larger commands.
Rear Admiral Upper Half (RADM): Two-star rank. Commands numbered fleets or serves as a deputy for regional commands.
Vice Admiral (VADM): Three-star rank. Commands numbered fleets or holds a position as deputy for regional commands.
