Was the eldest of the six children of King Aenys I Targaryen and Queen Alyssa Velaryon. She was a dragonrider, and rode the dragon Dreamfyre.

Rhaena was forcefully married to her uncle, King Maegor I Targaryen, who had usurped and killed her brother-husband Aegon, becoming one of his Black Brides. Later, in the reign of her brother King Jaehaerys I, Rhaena was called the "Queen in the West" during the time she spent in the westerlands, and the "Queen in the East" during the years she held Dragonstone.

Had lively lilac eyes and silver-gold hair. She was small at birth, but happy and healthy. By the age of fourteen, Rhaena had grown into a beautiful young girl.

Rhaena was a shy, dreamy child, more comfortable with animals than other children. She would often hide behind her parents as a child when near strangers, and never warmed to any of the female companions her mother presented her with. She much more preferred books. After bonding with her dragon Dreamfyre, however, Rhaena began to outgrow her shyness. After she had flown for the first time, though she remained a quiet child, she could no longer be considered timid. Shortly thereafter, Rhaena made her first friend. Numerous female favorites would follow throughout her life.^.

Rhaena had an exquisite singing voice. At eighteen, Rhaena was considered brave, fierce and headstrong. As an adult, she was sometimes stern and sometimes shy, frequently brooding. Rhaena had no interest in other people's children, but was possessive of her own, and of people she loved. She was furious when betrayed, and scornful of those she did not trust. Due to numerous betrayals and tragedies in her later life, Rhaena became withdrawn and detached. In her last years, her hair turned completely white.

Aerea Tagaryen

As a young child, Aerea was a shy, timid girl, much given to tears, bed-wetting, and fears. She was frightened of horses, dogs, boys with loud voices, men with beards, and dancing, and terrified of dragons, according to Grand Maester Benifer.

Following the coronation of her uncle Jaehaerys at Oldtown, however, Aerea proved to be lively, quick-witted, and adventurous. She soon spent half her days in the kennels, stables, and dragon yards, leading to rumors that Aerea had switched places during her time at Oldtown with her twin-sister Rhaella, a novice at the Starry Sept in Oldtown. From then onwards, Aerea was regarded as having a willful and stubborn temperament and a bold tongue. According to Lord Rogar Baratheon, she had a "fire" in her. Archmaester Gyldayn likewise described her as a "fiery young girl". By the age of eight Aerea was reported to have loved horses, and would later say that the time she spent working in the stables of the Red Keep were the happiest years of her life.

Aerea loved the excitement of the Red Keep and all the clangor and color and tumult of King's Landing and the attention she received as the king's heir. She loved her horse, her hounds, and her friends. By the time she had turned eight, she had become the leader of a pack of young girls who terrorized the Red Keep.

During her time on Dragonstone, Aerea became a terror, defying her septa, mother, and maesters, abusing her servants, absenting herself from activities without leave, and insulting the people at her mother's court.^[5] She became eager to return to the royal court and is said to have counted the days until she could mount a dragon and fly away.

Aerea did disappear from Dragonstone towards the end of 54 AC, claiming and flying away on the dragon Balerion, who had made his lair on the island after the death of his previous rider, King Maegor I Targaryen. Aerea and Balerion were missing for more than a year, but finally returned to King's Landing on the thirteenth day of the fourth moon of 56 AC, with a severely-ill Aerea clinging to the dragon's back. She was almost unrecognizable; she was stick thin, and whatever clothes she still wore were nothing more than tatters. Her hair was matted and a tangled mess, and her eyes were bloody. After speaking "I never", Aerea collapsed.

Benifer treated Aerea in his chambers with Septon Barth, who had been summoned to administer the rites for the dying. Only the two men witnessed her last hours; the maester forbade all others, including the king and queen, from entering. Benifer gave Aerea milk of the poppy and, to reduce her fever, immersed the princess in a tub of ice, but nothing helped. She had arrived at the Red Keep in the morning. By the hour of the bat, after sunset, Septon Barth announced that Aerea had died. She was cremated the next day at sunrise

Rhaella Targaryen

As a young child, Rhaella was a bolder and more robust girl than her sister Aerea. She was said to be a bold and willful child who was a terror to her septas.

Following the coronation of her uncle Jaehaerys at Oldtown, however, Rhaella devoted herself to prayer and study, and never again required chastisement. This change in character, as well as a simultaneous change in the character of her twin, Aerea, led to rumors that Rhaella had switched places with her sister Aerea while both girls had been in the city.

After her sister Aerea had disappeared on Balerion later that same year, Queen Rhaena visited Oldtown, hoping that Aerea might have sought out her twin sister Rhaella. Aerea was not in Oldtown, however. Rhaena visited with Rhaella for a time, and expressed regret about not having been a better mother. In reply, Rhaella embraced her mother and told her "I have had the best mother any child could wish for, the Mother Above, and you are to thank for her.”.

Following the death of Aerea in 56 AC, Queen Rhaena would never again visit King's Landing or Dragonstone, but she did travel to Oldtown once a year to visit Rhaella at the Starry Sept until her death in 73 AC.

By 58 AC, Rhaella had taken her vows as a septa. Near the end of 58 AC, the High Septon sent Rhaella to King's Landing for the tourney held to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the coronation of King Jaehaerys. It was said that Queen Alysanne wept when she saw Rhaella, as she was the very image of Aerea, only older.
