Description

DESCRIPTION

Monks are men and boys who are religious monastics living together in communities sharing accommodation, meals and the duties required to sustain the monastic complexes. They sleep in a communal dormitory, eat in a communal refectory, and individuals are forbidden to leave the nunnery or have private property. They are also expected to relinquish their possessions, and some have their hair cut or tonsured.

Monks take vows of chastity, renounced worldly goods and devoted themselves to prayer, religious studies and helping society's most needy. Many nuns produced religious literature and music as well as kept and created histographical records and are as much historians as male monks, scholars, etc. are. Many spend a lot of time reading, writing, and illustrating devotional books, prayer compendiums, and musical chants. They attend religious services throughout the day, including a midnight service called that could last until almost dawn. They also prayed for the souls of people who donated to the monastery. The monastic life is a respected profession and vocation; there is the chance of real power if one rises to the top.

The second or third sons of the aristocracy, who were not likely to inherit their father's lands, were often encouraged to join the church and one of the paths to a successful career was to join a monastery and receive an education there (learning reading, writing, arithmetic, and Latin). Most monks come from a well-off background; indeed, bringing a substantial donation on entry was expected. Recruits tend to be local but larger monasteries were able to attract people even from abroad. Consequently, there are never really any shortage of takers to join a monastery.

The number of monks was essentially limited to the monastery's income which largely came from the land it owned (and which was given to it by patrons over the years). Monasteries included a good number of lay brothers in addition to the monks and these were employed to do manual labour such as agricultural work, cooking or doing the laundry.

Levels

  • "Oblate": You are someone, perhaps a secondary son of aristocracy, who joined the order from the years as low as five. You do not really interact with most monks except the supervising monk(s) assigned to you. You are not permitted to be alone.
  • “Novice”: You are someone who joined the order in your 15th year or older and like Oblates you also do not go alone most places with a supervising monk. It will take about a year more for you to be even eligible to become a "full" monk.
  • "Monk": You have taken your vows and live your life as part of the larger monastery.

Branches

  • "Traveler": Monks who are either by himself or part of a small group of traveling all over the realm and even beyond to spread the Word of their deity.
    • Base Level -- "Traveling Monk": You are a monk who is either by himself or part of a small group of traveling all over the realm and even beyond to spread the Word of your deity.
  • “Monastery: Priory”: A very small or affected monastery run by a prior instead of an abbot. However, you're still under the jurisdiction of another monastery's abbot.
    • LV1 -- "Obedientary Monk": You are a senior-level monk and a lesser official who the superior appointed to assist in the running of the monastery. You may have very specific duties assigned maybe on a rotation basis, such as looking after the monastery's wine cellar, the garden, the infirmary, or the library and scriptorium (where the illustrated texts and manuscripts are made).
    • LV2 -- "Prior": You are the superior of a priory, thus the leader of an order of monks in a specific complex. An abbot of another monastery is still your superior, technically.
  • “Monastery: Abbot”: A monastery run by an abbot.
    • LV2 -- "Prior": You assist the abbot in the government of the monastery. You rank below him, but give his and your own orders to senior monks.
    • LV3 -- "Abbot": Selected by senior monks, you will hold this position for indefinitely until your death or unless the Pope decides to remove you for some reason or other. You have absolute authority over the monastery and are assisted by a prioress and a number of senior monks (obedientaries) who you or others gave specific duties.
