ASoIaF Careers: Night's Watch

The entire order of the Night's Watch as a career. Inspired by ASoiaF lore, for ASoiaF gameplay.

The Night's Watch is a military order dedicated to holding the Wall, the immense fortification on the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms, defending the realms of men from what lies beyond. The order's foundation dates back to the Age of Heroes, at the time when the Others were pushed back. The men of Night's Watch wear only black, and they are known as black brothers. Recruits who join the Watch are said to take the black. The order consists of three sub-orders: stewards, builders, and rangers. All are subject to the Lord Commander, and each of the three orders is led by its own officer: the Lord Steward, the First Builder, and First Ranger, respectively. These officers are appointed by the lord commander.

The organization also includes septons, maesters, and, at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, sailors. Because brothers come from throughout the Seven Kingdoms or even Essos, there is an unspoken pact to not discuss politics or former loyalties. When war breaks out in the Seven Kingdoms, the Night's Watch tries to remain neutral by honoring all kings and obeying none.

TO JOIN THE CAREER, YOU CAN'T BE MARRIED OR ENGAGED. YOU ALSO NEED TO HAVE FITNESS LEVEL 1.

Levels

  • "Fledgling Crow": You are a new recruit for the Wall. For the most part, you are scrubbing, sweeping, and training under an older and more experienced officer. You haven't taken any vows yet, so if you came by your own will you're still able to turn back and refuse further training at any time.
  • "Avowed Brother": You have taken your vows in either a sept or before a heart tree. Once a man takes his loyalty and celibacy vows, his crimes and debts are forgiven, and they will serve the Watch for life. So you had better thought about this carefully!

Branches

  • “Lord Commander”: The Lord Commander is the final authority and oversees the entire order of the Night's Watch. He serves in office until the day he dies, when a replacement is elected by the men of the Watch. Any man of the Night's Watch can be nominated to be the lord commander.
    • Base Level - "Lord Commander": You are the final authority and oversees the entire order of the Night's Watch.
  • "Builders": Builders are responsible for tending to and maintaining the Wall and its castles. The order provides masons, carpenters, miners, and woodsmen to this end. They repair the keeps and towers of the Night's Watch, dig tunnels and crush stone for the roads and footpaths on top of the Wall, and clear away the parts of the forest that presses too close to the Wall on its northern side.
    • LV 1 - "Builder": You are now a hardworking appointee of the order for the Builders. Keep your strength up and your skill set sharp!
    • LV 2 - "First Builder": Now--under the Lord Commander of course--you lead the rest of the Builder order.
  • "Rangers": Rangers are the main fighting force, adept at surviving in the wilderness and tasked with scouting and patrolling the haunted forest beyond the Wall. They actively defend the Wall and ride out to face the Watch's enemies, including the free folk and the mysterious Others.
    • LV 1 - "Ranger": You are now a hardworking appointee of the order for the Builders. Keep your strength up, make your sword ready, and keep observing your surroundings. You cannot be taken unwares!
    • LV 2 - "First Ranger": Now--under the Lord Commander of course--you lead the rest of the Ranger order.
  • "Stewards": Stewards are responsible for an assortment of critical functions, providing vital day-to-day services. They hunt and farm, tend horses, gather firewood, cook meals, make clothing, maintain weapons, and bring supplies needed by the Night's Watch from the South. Like other members of the Watch, the stewards must be ready to fight at a moment's notice, and all have received at least basic combat training. They hunt and farm, tend horses, gather firewood, cook meals, make clothing, maintain weapons, and bring the supplies needed by the Night's Watch from the south. Personal stewards can be assigned to higher officers for whom they might also squire, or to a maester.
    • LV 1 - "Steward": You are now a hardworking appointee of the order for the Builders. Keep your strength up, have a sharp eye no matter how you may use it (archery, cooking, or reading and recording), and attend to your essential duties well!
    • LV 2 - "First Steward": Now--under the Lord Commander of course--you lead the rest of the Steward order.
  • "Sailors of Eastwatch-by-the-Sea": Eastwatch is the easternmost castle of the Night's Watch along the Wall, located on a grey, windswept shore by the Bay of Seals. The Night's Watch keeps several galleys at Eastwatch, including larger vessels capable of crossing the narrow sea, and lean fighting vessels. The galleys patrol the Bay of Seals, and sometimes catch smugglers who trade weapons to the free folk. Therefore, the Watchers here are the more adept at sailing.
    • Base Level - "An Eastwatch-by-the-Sea Sailor": You aren't actually part of a sailing-exclusive order but a kind of Steward, and your skills are critical for contact with the free folk and other ne'erdo wells that need confronting on Sea. Or to just get materials through trade the order wouldn't get otherwise.
