🏛️In the early years of the last century, Chile marked the centenary of its first government junta, established in 1810. Amidst the nationwide celebrations, the then-President, Ramón Barros Luco, requested funding from Congress to construct a new building for the National Library—a structure that would come to be known as the "Palace of Books." The foundation stone was laid in 1913, and the building officially opened its doors in 1925, although the original cross-shaped design was never fully completed due to budget constraints.🗿
Fun facts:
The current building is the fifth location to house the institution.
The site was formerly occupied by the Convent of the Poor Clares (Convento de las Monjas Claras).
Its structure was one of the first projects commissioned by democratic state institutions to be built entirely of reinforced concrete.
