Description
LightFX is a Minecraft shader pack focused on enhancing the game's lighting, reflections, water, and atmospheric effects while preserving the recognizable vanilla Minecraft aesthetic.
The shader pack is designed to make light feel more dynamic and immersive without completely changing the visual style of Minecraft.
✨ Features
☀️ Sun & Moon Effects
LightFX adds enhanced visual effects when looking directly at the Sun or Moon, including:
- Dynamic sunlight glow
- Moonlight glow
- Lens-flare-style effects
- Soft light halos
- Directional light highlights
The intensity of these effects changes depending on the viewing direction, making the Sun and Moon feel more visually integrated into the world.
💡 Enhanced Surface Lighting
LightFX improves how light interacts with Minecraft's surfaces.
Different materials can have different visual properties, allowing surfaces to react to light differently:
- Matte surfaces — soft and subtle highlights
- Polished surfaces — stronger highlights
- Metal — bright specular reflections
- Glass — reflective and transparent appearance
- Ice — bright, smooth reflections
- Wood and stone — softer material response
This creates more variation between blocks instead of making every surface react to light in exactly the same way.
🌊 Enhanced Water
Water is one of the main visual features of LightFX.
The shader adds:
- Dynamic surface waves
- Procedural water detail
- Sunlight highlights
- Moonlight highlights
- Fresnel-based reflections
- Screen-space reflections
- More reflective water at grazing viewing angles
- Different light response depending on the viewing direction
The goal is to make Minecraft's water feel more dynamic while keeping it recognizable.
🪟 Glass Reflections
Glass receives its own material properties.
LightFX can add:
- Fresnel reflections
- Screen-space reflections
- Stronger reflections at shallow viewing angles
- Specular highlights
This makes glass behave differently from ordinary blocks instead of simply appearing as a transparent texture.
🧊 Ice
Ice has a separate material response with:
- Stronger reflections
- Fresnel effects
- Smooth highlights
- Screen-space reflections
This gives ice a more polished and reflective appearance than ordinary blocks.
🔩 Metallic Surfaces
Metallic blocks receive a much stronger reflective response.
Metal materials have:
- High reflectivity
- Strong specular highlights
- Fresnel-based reflection
- Screen-space reflections
- Lower roughness than ordinary blocks
This allows materials such as iron, gold, copper and netherite to visually stand apart from stone and other matte blocks.
🌫️ Material-Based Rendering
LightFX uses different material properties such as:
- Roughness
- Metallic
- Transmission
- Surface normals
These properties determine how individual surfaces interact with light.
This allows the shader to distinguish between smooth, rough, metallic, transparent and translucent materials.
🌊 Procedural Water Detail
The water surface uses procedural wave distortion to create additional visual detail without requiring every individual wave to be represented by a separate texture.
The wave system combines several different frequencies to create a less uniform surface pattern and dynamically changes over time.
🎨 Vanilla-Friendly Visual Style
LightFX is not intended to completely transform Minecraft into a photorealistic game.
The goal is to enhance Minecraft rather than replace its visual identity.
The shader focuses on:
- Better lighting
- More interesting reflections
- Enhanced water
- Material differentiation
- Atmospheric effects
while keeping the original Minecraft aesthetic recognizable.
⚙️ Performance
LightFX is designed with performance in mind, but advanced effects such as screen-space reflections and procedural water rendering can increase GPU usage.
Performance may vary depending on:
- Render distance
- Minecraft resolution
- GPU
- Shader settings
- Screen-space reflection quality
- World complexity
- Other installed mods
For the best performance, lower shader quality or reflection settings if available.
🧩 Compatibility
LightFX is designed as a Minecraft shader pack and is intended to work with modern shader loaders such as Iris.
Compatibility can depend on:
- Minecraft version
- Iris version
- Mod loader
- Other rendering mods
- Resource packs
- PBR resource packs
For the best experience, use a compatible version of Iris and Minecraft.
🚧 Development
LightFX is actively being developed.
Planned improvements may include:
- Better water reflections
- Improved underwater rendering
- Depth-based underwater lighting
- More advanced shadows
- Improved glass rendering
- More detailed material properties
- Better PBR support
- Improved reflections
- More realistic atmospheric lighting
- Additional environmental effects
LightFX is built to gradually expand from a lightweight lighting enhancement into a more complete Minecraft rendering experience.
🌟 Why LightFX?
Minecraft already has a distinctive visual style. LightFX aims to enhance the parts that can make the world feel more alive — light, reflections, water and materials — without losing the blocky identity of the game.
