The story takes place in an alternative version of the exclusion zone. As a result of secret scientific experiments, the Zone has been populated with natural anomalies, mutant creatures that prey on humans, and objects of supernatural origin that possess useful properties and great value.
The main characters of the game are stalkers, individuals who venture into the Zone in search of valuable artifacts.
Gameplay features:
- The player's struggle against dangerous environmental manifestations. Stone and metal structures are almost always radioactive, and most of the deadly anomalies are invisible and inaudible until the player's character is in close proximity to them.
- A system of weather effects and day-night cycles, as well as the migration of monsters and NPC squads across locations, allowing the player to witness or participate in random, non-story-related battles.
- The main character can die not only from anomalies and enemies, but also from hunger.
