Unexpected Dangers (VR Available)

A subtle Vanilla+ horror experience with optional immersive VR support.

Unexpected Dangers is a Vanilla+ horror experience originally designed with virtual reality in mind, but fully playable on a regular desktop without a VR headset.

The pack focuses on subtle, unpredictable horror rather than constant jump scares. Strange encounters are deliberately sporadic, allowing long stretches of relatively normal Minecraft gameplay before something unexpected happens.

Rather than relying on repetitive loud noises or intrusive images, Unexpected Dangers aims to create tension through atmosphere, exploration, and the feeling that something may be watching or waiting for you.

Outside of its horror elements, the experience remains close to Vanilla Minecraft, enhanced with immersive, environmental, audio, visual, and quality-of-life additions.

VR support is provided through Vivecraft, but VR is completely optional.

OptiFine / Recommended Setup

For the intended visual experience and best compatibility with this modpack, OptiFine 1.19.2 HD U I1 is recommended. This is the version used during development and testing.

OptiFine is not included in the CurseForge download and must be installed manually:

  1. Download OptiFine_1.19.2_HD_U_I1 from the official OptiFine website.
  2. Open the modpack folder in CurseForge.
  3. Place the OptiFine .jar inside the mods folder.

Other OptiFine versions have not been tested with this pack and may cause compatibility issues.

Shaders & Distant Horizons

If you plan to play with shaders, Sildur's Vibrant Shaders v1.41 Extreme-VL is recommended and has been tested with the pack.

During testing, I was unable to get Distant Horizons working reliably alongside shaders in this setup. Because of this, players who intend to use shaders may want to disable Distant Horizons, especially if they experience visual issues or want to improve performance.

Distant Horizons can still be used normally when playing without shaders, so whether to keep it enabled depends on your preferred visual setup and performance.

About the Horror

Unexpected Dangers is not intended to bombard the player with constant scares. The horror is deliberately inconsistent and unpredictable. You may spend a long time exploring, building, or mining without anything unusual happening.

That's intentional.

The goal is for strange events to feel unexpected rather than routine.
