The Reaper, guardian of life and death who once upheld karmic reincarnation, witnessed humanity’s blatant disregard for life and endless fratricide. It abandoned its neutral vows and descended as the Doom Reaper to bring universal divine punishment. Only when survivors set aside all grudges and unite to slay the Reaper can they break free from the chains of retribution. Amid the ravaged ruins, they shall embrace peace and rebirth, forever marked by the scars of history.

I. The Sin of War: A Doomed Fate Forged by Humanity

The apocalypse was no divine catastrophe, nor an invasion from other realms. All desolation, ruin and suffering stem solely from humanity’s unbridled greed and bigotry.

Civilization flourished in the old era, with thriving cities and fertile lands that granted mankind a stable and prosperous home. Yet major factions fought over territories, energy resources and extreme beliefs, abandoning all communication and tolerance. A decades-long global civil war broke out, bringing the world to the brink of annihilation.

This disaster was nothing but brutal bloodshed between kin. Artillery reduced cities to rubble, while toxic chemicals poisoned soil and water. Vast fertile plains turned into desolate wastelands. Countless civilians, soldiers and innocent people perished in the flames of war. Their bodies lay scattered across the wilderness, left untended forever. Restless spirits, consumed by agony and grievance, wandered the broken world, their mournful wails echoing endlessly.

War completely shattered social order and eroded moral principles. The strong plundered supplies without mercy, while the weak were cast aside. Betrayal and slaughter became the norm of survival. Humanity turned its own homeland into a living hell.

Dwelling beyond the mortal realm, the Reaper had long abided by neutrality, tasked with guiding spirits and maintaining the cycle of life and death, detached from worldly conflicts. But this prolonged, merciless carnage revealed a cruel truth: humanity took life for granted and killed one another with frequent conflicts, passing down hatred and violence from generation to generation. Grievances of countless lost souls accumulated, gradually wearing away the Reaper’s eternal resolve.

II. The Reaper's Vengeance: From Neutral Warden to Doom Judge

At first, the Reaper still upheld order, punishing only the masterminds and perpetrators of the war, never harming innocent people struggling to survive.

Yet the war never truly ended, and violence permeated the entire race. Children grew up amid slaughter, viewing plunder and harm as commonplace. To survive, survivors cast aside conscience and resorted to violence to settle all disputes. In the Reaper’s eyes, no one remained truly innocent. The entire race had sunk into numbness amid endless killing, betraying the very essence of life.

It finally realized that punishing a handful of sinners could never awaken the blind masses. Only universal punishment could make humanity remember the heavy price of disrespecting life. The old warden of reincarnation vanished, and the Doom Reaper, driven by overwhelming resentment, rose to bring judgment.

No longer distinguishing between the guilty and the innocent, the Reaper deemed all people born in this sinful land accountable for the original sin of their race. It tore through the barriers between realms and descended upon the wasteland. Gathering the spirits of all who died in the civil war, it twisted their bodies and minds into feral, bloodthirsty mutants. Relentless hordes of the undead swept across the land, carrying out the Reaper’s cold, long-lasting vengeance.

Its jet-black scythe cut through smoke and mist as the Reaper roamed among broken walls, reaping mortal lives. Forged from humanity’s sins, the weapon severed not merely flesh and blood, but also people’s lingering fluke and delusion. Whenever the Reaper appeared, a solemn funeral song resounded far and wide — the lament of countless spirits, and an unyielding final judgment upon human civilization.

III. The Truth of the Apocalypse: Man-Made Wasteland, Divine Retribution

Most survivors mistakenly blamed the Reaper for all disasters. The truth, however, is harsh and clear: barren wastelands, depleted resources and collapsed civilization are permanent scars left by the civil war. The Reaper never sought to destroy this world.

It merely enforced a long, cruel punishment upon the ruins humanity had created.

Ceaseless undead hordes, constant mortal peril and lingering ghostly gloom are all chains of vengeance forged by the Reaper. Every supply fought over by survivors testifies to the collapse of morality. Every mutant slain by players was once an innocent soul killed by fellow humans, doomed to unrest for eternity. All hardships endured in the wasteland are the inevitable consequences of humanity’s own misdeeds.

Ambitious individuals in this chaotic world attempted to summon the Reaper through ancient rituals, coveting the power of spirits to rule the wasteland. They would never understand that what they awakened was no external calamity, but the sins accumulated by their race for generations. As long as the Reaper lived, the punishment would never end, trapping humanity in an endless cycle of despair.

IV. Epilogue: Radiance Amid Doom — End Retribution, Reborn from Ashes

Pointless infighting only hastens the fall of civilization, and empty repentance can never soothe the Reaper’s wrath. To end this catastrophe, humanity had no room for compromise. They had to face their sins head-on and break the chains of fate through resistance.

The remaining survivors came to their senses. Putting aside factional divisions and personal feuds, they abandoned the instinct to survive by force. United by the resolve to protect their home and revere life, they marched toward a desperate final battle against the Reaper.

After a brutal bloodshed, the survivors paid a heavy price and finally slew the Reaper. As its form faded, the twisted spirit creatures fell silent. The deathly chains enveloping the world shattered completely, and the endless undead threat came to an end.

Barren lands slowly regained vitality. Survivors gathered once more and rebuilt their homes among the ruins. Long-awaited peace finally arrived.

Still, the scars of war can never be erased. The departed will never return, and past sins will never be forgotten. Peace does not mean absolution, but a choice to never repeat the tragedies of the past.

Radiance Amid Doom is never a flawless utopia, but a redemption etched with profound pain. Having endured the catastrophe, humanity truly learned to cherish life and peace. Guided by hard lessons, they guarded the spark of humanity amid cold ashes. With reflection and hope, their civilization stepped forward toward a new light.
