Long ago, a dense forest spanned the entirety of the continent. It was a peaceful place, where Pokémon and people lived in harmony. There was no need for Pokémon Trainers because there were no threats, most Legendary and Mythical Pokémon were not native to Fiore, and the land was isolated from the rest of the world. A psychic storm raged a great distance out from the land, stirring the waters and the skies, a result of the massive number of Mew that lived there. Some say that Mew originated here, others say that they fled here to hide, but nobody really knows for sure.
Over the years, some people left, and rumors began to spread about the Fairy Forest. Treasure hunters and glory-seeking trainers from other lands attempted to reach Fiore, but none could, and many perished. Eventually, greed-filled Warlords enslaved Legendary Pokémon, and outsiders breached the protective storm. Three great Warlords landed around the same time, bringing with them the Legendary Birds. A great war broke out, as the three factions fought each other to take this new land for themselves. However, as they had always been, the Legendary Trio remained matched, but in chaos. More Warlords came, bringing with them Ho-oh and Lugia in an attempt to control the Birds, but their Legendary Duo only brought more chaos. Now, where once peace was king, destruction and war reigned supreme.
At first the Mew fought back, using their intense psychic powers to counter and defeat the Legendaries, but this only fed the anger and malice of the Warlords. Determined to take this place for themselves, hundreds of Legendary Pokémon were enslaved and forced into battle, both against each other and against the Mew.
It was morning, when the light first glints off the dew on the forest’s leaves. A great battle cry was heard, and a Warlord mad with an intense hunger for power unleashed two sets of opposing Legendaries: Xerneas and Yveltal, and Solgaleo and Lunala. His Pokémon fought fiercely with the Mew, defeating them one by one. It would’ve been over, and he would’ve ruled Fiore, but he made one fatal mistake: keeping opposing Legendaries in close proximity for an extended time. Under the influence of Yveltal, hundreds of Mew died, their psychic powers being released into the surrounding area; then, instants later under the influence of Xerneas, those Mew were reborn, bleeding out more psychic power. At once, light scorched the land as Solgaleo let off its light, then darkness filled the air as Lunala sapped the light out. All in mere moments, day and night began to cycle in mere minutes, and the forest withered while it grew.
The hectic chaos brought on by this combination of Legendaries was only fueled by the residual psychic power from the Mew caught in the mix. A dark influence began to grow, and the forest itself started coming to life. With the forest now corrupted, the Mew vanished without a trace, and the twisted power was left unchecked. New Pokémon began to appear that had never been in the region before, and the forest started closing itself up, blocking out all light from the sun. Thinking it the doing of the native people, the Warlords turned their Legendary Pokémon loose on the land with one instruction: destroy. However, the power was too great, and most of the Legendaries disappeared; those that returned died shortly thereafter. Energy began to emanate from the land, and trainers could now Dynamax their Pokémon. To this day, no one’s sure if there’s really an Eternatus somewhere in Fiore or not.
The survivors were now trapped in what became known as the Eerie Forest, and with the powerful Pokémon wielded by the Warlords now wiped out, only one thing stood between this darkness and complete destruction of the region: a secret society that had fought against the Warlords all these years came into the open. For years after the Great Calamity, the society fought to protect the people of Fiore. Eventually, the eight pillars of the society, The Hashira, made their move to return peace to the region. They hunted down and captured two of the Legendary Weather Trio, Groudon and Kyogre. Their plan was to uproot and burn the forest with Groudon, then wash the land clean and revitalize it with Kyogre. However, in the process the two Pokémon were twisted by the darkness, and they ran amok on the region.
Switching plans, they left the rampaging Legendaries, and made for the continental center of the region, deep in the heart of the Eerie Forest. There, the Dragon Hashira planned to summon six Dragon Legendaries: Rayquaza to tame the two wild Legendaries they had lost; Dialga to restore the proper passing of time, previously destroyed by Xerneas and Yveltal; Palkia to cleanse space in the region, distorted by the psychic residue from the Mew; Giratina to take the violence and distortion with it to the Distortion World; and Zekrom and Reshiram to return balance to the chaotic land.
At the center of the Forest, the Hashira built a tower, both as a signal to lost trainers, and as a place to summon the Legendary Dragons. They were successful, and people began settling around the tower. However, the Forest struck back, and in a forceful blow the Signal Tower was destroyed along with the town, scattering the people. Most of the Hashira were killed defending the survivors, leaving the Dragon Hashira alone. In a last-ditch effort, he called upon the six Dragons to aid him. Together, the six Legendary Dragons dealt a devastating blow to the Forest, utterly obliterating almost all of it, and their combined power cleansed the affected land of its dark influence. Sadly, in the aftermath of the battle, the Dragon Hashira passed on.
With the majority of the Eerie Forest and its dark power gone, and under the influence of Rayquaza, the two rampaging Legendaries settled where they had formerly destroyed, leaving the land there scarred. The survivors had no qualm with their settling there, as the scarred land acted as a barrier from what remained of the Eerie Forest on the two edges of the continent. In the years after the Dragons Cleansing, the survivors built what would become Signal City, where the heart of the forest once stood. In honor of the Hashira and their great sacrifice, the Signal Tower was rebuilt in the same spot, and there it stands today.
Now, a new group is on the scene, but this group is different from the Warlords of the past. Their leader remains hidden, and sends grunts to do the dirty work. So far, there’s no evidence that any Legendary or Mythical Pokémon have been captured or enslaved, but one thing is clear: Team Cataclysm is worse than the Warlords of old days. Whereas the old Warlords sought to conquer the region, Team Cataclysm believes that, if they can restore the Eerie Forest, the Mew will return, and they can use them to conquer the entire world.
