There's a mod that doesn't let you set the number of mobs higher than 500, but you can still set that limit yourself. The limit just isn't shown on the screen
If you have the F3 menu open, your FPS will be significantly lower—that's normal, so don't worry.
With this mod, you can also add and update texture packs
A cool mod that lets you lower your resolution if, for example, you want to play with shaders but have an older GPU
