Onions and Turtles is a modpack made to improve progression and the survival mode experience in minecraft, to make everything more immersive, interactive, polished, and most importantly fun to interact with. This pack adds a lot of new content to the game end integrates some popular mods, but also reworks a lot of aspects of the game to improve your time with it. Everything from exploration to combat to automation and building is enhanced in a vanilla style way, without sticking too much to the formula.
Progression changes(early-game) : forget punching trees, early-game will put you in a more dire situation, where you will be required to make flimsy primitive tools with flint before you can get a crafting table and jump straight to copper and iron tools. Until you set up a create press, the best armor you'll be able to get early-game is chainmail.
Other progression changes: The nether(amplified) will be a much more significant hurdle than usual due to Cold Sweat making its heat inhospitable without proper preparation, such as waterskins and insulation, and collecting hoglin hides and soul sprouts will be necessary if you want to survive long enough to reach a fortress... perhaps figuring out early-game potions could be of some help... You'll face similar issues near the bottom of th world, where you would usually strip mine... As for the end, reaching it is much harder as eyes of ender do not locate the stronghold- instead you should craft the explorers compass, which requires a totem of undying and the elder eye, requiring facing both the pillager threat(raids are significantly enhanced, consider raising an army of kangaroos, gorillas or rhinos(yes actually)) and the ocean monument
Changes to enchanting: Enchanting itself is done with the enchanting infuser, which removes the RNG aspect of enchanting while demanding a heavier price. It is crafted using lesser soul gems, meaning you'll have to dabble in magic. some enchantments are added, and some are repurposed, such as smite which can only be applied to a silver blade, and power and fortune which are removed to incentivise making a pistol or wand, and getting more out of your ores with a crushing wheel setup. As a side note, the anvil cap is removed, and an upgrade to the infuser using a nether star allows for repairing any item with XP directly, and nephrite can be used for XP storage.
Tech and Magic: you'll need to make several alloys using a create mixing setup, such as steel, the magical alloy pewter, the electrum, and netherite. With pewter you can make the basic tools for magic, which you can dabble with to create multiple magic trinkets and tools, as well as powerful wands and attires. You'll be able to partake in occult rituals, and even worship the dark lord... crafting the ars ecclesia with a book and rotten flesh will tell you all you need to know about the rules of magic...
Combat: zombies, skeletons, and spiders are smarter and more fun to fight, and their gear gets better as you reach the depths. On top of that, get ready to face zombie brutes, huntsmen, wraiths, assassins, cave centipedes, thrashers in the depths, and more, and you'll fight them with interactive hitbox combat from better combat and shield expansion's parry system.
Exploration: exploration will be worth your while, not only with the subtle changes adde dby geophilic and other mods, but with the new life brought into the world with the new creatures and mob variants you can come across in specific biomes or caves(enchanced through spelunkery, spelunkers charm, sound physics and more), and structures are enhanced through both YUNGS and HOPO's structures, the latter full of unique loot such as unobtainable potions. The ability to rip enchantments off of items will make finding mending gold tools actually useful as well. You'll be able to find new biomes such as rainforests, or rocky dunes as well, and huge boulders in plains.
Vanilla integration: Compasses in the inventory nicely display coordinates, the depth gauge your Y level, spyglasses act as the WAILA mod does, the minimap is an item that dyamically uses maps, fullbright is accessible through the phatasm cowl giving permanent night vision.
Cottagecore: Reap the rewards of your farm by making excellent meals(farmer's delight, of course), and enjoy these with some beers and cheeses. flavours such as mint, banana and strawberry also make for great desserts with specialty effects. You also have an expanded palette to build with, and access to furniture.
Transportation: New horse utils, new mounts, copper powered rails, rebalanced elytra, magical raven cloak, jade flinger + enderpearl tech, all of these make transportation a breeze
All this and more, along with quality of life and aesthetic changes, bosses, reworked ender dragon, either way I doubt you'll be bored while p^laying this and best of all, it'll still feel vanilla, just enhanced.
(do not try to make the sword of sapping, it is disabled for being way to powerful but still shows up in JEI)
